EXCLUSIVE: Whether it’s Marvin Gaye, Janis Joplin, Phil Spector or a host of others, enough announced music pics stall that it’s hard to find one worth worth getting excited about. Try this one: Sacha Baron Cohen has closed a deal to play Queen front man Freddie Mercury in a film that’s being scripted by Peter Morgan for a 2011 production start. The untitled film will be financed by GK Films partners Graham King and Tim Headington, who’ll produce in partnership with Robert De Niro and Jane Rosenthal’s Tribeca Productions, and Queen Films. Morgan is already working on a script focused on the band’s formative years, leading up to Queen’s appearance at Live Aid in 1985. Queen’s performance is considered one of the rock’s all-time great live concert appearances.
A rights package has been set that includes the band’s tunes, including Bohemian Rhapsody, We Will Rock You, We Are the Champions , Another One Bites The Dust and You’re My Best Friend. It is unclear whether Baron Cohen will sing—I’m told he can sing—or whether Mercury’s vocals will be used. Nobody sang like Mercury, so trying to replicate him would be a tall order. These decisions will be made as a director gets hired. Mercury died November 24, 1991 of complications from AIDS. Though his death helped to remove the stigma of AIDS sufferers prevalent at that time and particularly in the rock music industry, Mercury’s last days won’t be the subject of the film.
Baron Cohen is an intriguing choice. For one thing, he looks more like Mercury than any star I can think of. While Baron Cohen’s primarily a comic actor, he plays well-defined characters in films from Borat to Talladega Nights, Sweeney Todd and Bruno, and he’s currently starring in the 3D Martin Scorsese-directed drama Hugo Cabret, also for GK Films. In April, Baron Cohen was the catalyst for a big bucks comedy pitch being written by Alec Berg, Jeff Schaffer and David Mandel. Paramount beat out others for a film, which calls for Baron Cohen to play dual roles of a goat herder and a deposed dictator who gets lost in the US. It was an extravagant deal and the project is on a fast track. It’s unclear how timing factors into the Mercury film.
Sacha Baron Cohen BANNED From Oscars 2012
Morgan has become a go-to guy for prestige films based on real figures, from Frost/Nixon to The Queen (no relation), The Last King of Scotland and Damned United. His most recent script, Hereafter, made its premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival last Sunday, with director Clint Eastwood and stars Matt Damon and Bryce Dallas Howard introducing the film at the Elgin Theater.
GK’s King confirmed the Queen deal: “Queen is one of the greatest rock bands of all time, and a music brand all unto itself,” he said in a statement. “Freddie Mercury was an awe-inspiring performer, so with Sacha in the starring role coupled with Peter’s screenplay and the support of Queen, we have the perfect combination to tell the real story behind their success.”
This is the first time the surviving members of Queen–Brian May, Roger Taylor and John Deacon–have licensed songs and music publishing rights for a movie about the band and they formed Queen Films to be part of the production team on the film. They previously supplied their songs to We Will Rock You, the stage musical that has been running 9 years on London’s West End.
GK Films tomorrow opens the Ben Affleck-directed The Town through Warner Bros, and the Angelina Jolie-Johnny Depp thriller The Tourist opens December 10 through Columbia Pictures. Baron Cohen’s repped by WME and Morgan by UTA and UK-based Independent Talent Group.

Why would you cast a comedian as a singer? He doesn’t have the actual vocal talent. I mean, yeah, I thought Cohen was amusing in Sweeney Todd, but Freddy was a friggin’ alto, not a bass. What’s next? 50 Cent as Barry White? Anyway, they should get Jon LaJoie for the part. He sounds like he can fake it better.
I’ve always thought that if and when a Queen movie gets made, Sacha Baron Cohen would make a perfect Freddie Mercury
I’ve always thought that if and when a guy named RoyalSkull wrote a post about Freddie Mercury, I would read it and thnk…”dumbass.”
Haha internet badassssss, right on man
This will be a movie i am SOOOO looking forward to with SBC as the lead, wise choice!
another bio-pic of an over-rated rock band. doesnt any body realize rock music sucks?
So you never noticed art is a matter of opinion huh?
You think it is science?
Tell us what is good, oh music guru.
Why are you reading such news if you dislike it, babe?
Why are some people mentioning Adam Lambert? He even said that Freddie had a voice that is so hard to duplicate. I think Johnny Depp should play the 1970′s Freddie, Willy Wonka anyone? Sacha should play the 1980′s Freddie. This is going to be difficult. Sacha is tall at 6’3″. Freddie was 5’9″. Freddie was built more like Depp. I’ve read that Sacha is a private, quiet man just like Freddie. So Sacha should be able to channel that when playing an offstage Freddie. Freddie led a fantastic life even though it was at times sad. I hope they stick to the music and the Queen tours.
Who’s going to play Brian, John and Roger? Who’s going to play David Bowie and all the other great rock legends. Good luck to Sacha because Freddie was the greatest rock legend of all time.
Yes. Let’s put that question out there. Who IS going to play Brian, Roger and John? Let’s start making suggestions….
Owen Wilson could be Roger
gross. just because SBC can look the part doesnt’ mean he has the chops to play Freddie Mercury – and I don’t think he’s a good actor. What a shallow casting choice.
adam lambert has a voice eerily similar to freddie mercury, they are the only two people that can hit those notes. plus adam comes from a professional theater background. his performance on american idol a couple years ago of “we are the champions” with the last singers of queen was phenominal

Oh for gods sake!. the producers are doing themselves a massive dis-service if they don’t cast “John Blunt” from Australian Queen tribute band “Killer Queen” . He is “FREDDIE MERCURY” Check out his photos on Killerqueen.com.au . The hair on your neck will stand erect.
Cast an unknown I say! He also sounds remarkably like Freddie too. it’s just a no-brainer!!!
And his acting creditials are? and he can draw how many viewers?
I have it on good authority that the Wayans have been inked to do a biopic of the Cornelius Brothers and Sister Rose.
Did you ever see Eric McCormick’s screen test as Freddy Mercury? He was friggin’ spot on!
I have never seen it. Where can I find Eric McCormick’s screen test. He is the perfect fit as Freddy Mercury?
I HATE Cohen…HATE HIM. How dare they get a hack like him to play a great like Freddie Mercury, what an insult to his memory. Mercury and Queen deserve better.
I am so excited about the up coming movie.. I’ve always thought Adam Lambert should play Freddy, but Sasha looks more like him..What I really would like would be a biography of Freddy Mercury..
A MILLION times BAD decision!!! A. He’s not Indian. B. He’s too tall to play someone when Brian May is 6’3″ and C. Just NO!!!!! Not to mention if you are portraying Queen from their early years, he’s already too old to do that. It just isn’t going to work. End of story.
To be fair, Mercury wasn’t Indian either
Freddie Mercury was Parsi. Parsis came from Persia a thousand years ago. The Parsis fled Persia because of Muslim persecution and settled in India. Freddie’s parents left India and moved to Zanzibar, Africa. Freddie’s father worked for the British government office in Zanzibar. Freddie was born. Freddie led a fascinating life, before and during Queen.
Erm, Freddie was most definitely Indian. Yes, he was part Persian, but to deny his Indian roots is like trying to say that Obama isn’t black because he’s half-white. Being half-white doesn’t cancel out the black part, just like being part Persian doesn’t cancel out the Indian part in Freddie’s case.
that’s INSANE. height has nothing to do with it. he will do a SUPERB job. freddie wasnt INDIAN either, he just went to school in india. he was from an island called Zanzibar off the east coast of africa. and Queen didnt get really big until freddie was around 26 or so. Sacha can certainly portray a 26 year old. my ONLY thing i’m upset about with the film is that its more about Queen than freddie,a nd i would LOVE to see a film about freddie’s life because it was so outlandish and also would like the world to see what he went through his last few months.
Such self-righteousness! Freddie was Persian. How ’bout checking your facts before you spout off about them?
Freddie was Persian (Iranian.)
And have you ever heard of movie magic?
Could Jennifer Lopez sing as well as Selena? No. Did that stop filmmakers from casting her in the role? No. Did they come up with a way around this problem? Yes. It’s called lip-syncing. I’m sure they’ll do the same for Sasha.
Or maybe because they want to end the film on a high note, rather than a sad one. Mercury was a symbol of optimism and hope, just like one of his signature songs, “Somebody to Love”. Besides, people who aren’t familiar with him and his music mostly know him as “that gay guy who died of AIDS”. But yeah, I agree it’s kind of dishonest to not include that part. That could’ve been Sasha’s chance to act out the greatest death scene since Greta Garbo in “Camille”.
Adam Lambert??? People, he can sing, but he is NOT AN ACTOR. Unless we haven’t heard of the 3 years he spent at RADA, NIDA, or about his MFA from Yale School of Drama, then he is no thespian. This is what Reality Tv has done to Hollywood. People think “anyone” who resembles a person in looks or mannerisms can be plugged right into a big studio movie. Someone on another site said that Samantha Ronson should play Lisbeth Salander and that Fincher has no idea how to cast a movie. Huh? All those people on those horrible reality shows that call themselves “actors” just because their shows are somewhat scripted are lunatics. They have zero training and none of them possess the natural ability of rare exceptions like Leo DiCaprio, Johnny Depp, or Joaquin Phoenix that are brilliant despite no formal training. Let’s just start giving Snookie all the roles that Cate Blanchett passes on. Perhaps “The Situation” can take over the Born Identity franchise or play Thomas Watson to Daniel Day Lewis’s Alexander Graham Bell. “Yo!!! I can here you and stuff on the other end ova hea!!!”
Jennifer Hudson won an Oscar for “Dreamgirls”. Don’t think she went to RADA or NIDA … nope, nada.
Perfect casting, but not including his death? What kind of a copout is that? Is Peter Morgan hoping to squeeze out sequels like he’s milked Tony Blair for?
Will have to be lip sync as no one can reach the range that Freddie did! I will go and see this film as I’m a huge Queen fan, but have a question, who’s playing Brian, Roger, and John? Or are they just going to use footage from all the gigs??
Will pass judgement after I’ve watched the movie but I hope it does Freddie his family and friends and us Queen fans justice!
Are you all sure that these guys are not related. You all should do a DNA comparisons. I have seen alot of movies with look-a-likes but this one is the best…
I believe that they are related…
Freddie Mercury isn’t Indian he is a Parsi who are descended from exiled Iranians that migrated to India, his real name was Farrokh Bulsara.
Sacha also has middle eastern heritage and he does look like a younger Freddie so I think its a good match.
SBC is gonna nail this role. It’s a no-brainer. It’s interesting that they’re focusing on the the band leading up to and including LIve Aid. There’s so much they could do regarding dramatic material with Freddie and AIDS.
I dont think i would say great casting although I cannot wait for this movie to come out….This guy normally plays the most idiotic characters so i am kind of curious to see if he can pull this off. He can’t be as lame as he seems. Plus, i have been dying for a movie about Freddie to be made, he was awesome.
Good idea, Baron Cohen make a good job of it. It is heavy transformations that he is good at, wild guys, not so much subtle characters, yes – this is his thing.
Now, I know this may be a long strech from Freddie Mercury, but if producers in general read this (which I doubt, but… who knows?), please think of a Fred Astaire biopic with Vincent Cassel in the leading role: he’s perfect for it!
They will really have to work some magic to transform that man in to Freddie..his teeth are horrendous..
I am willing to watch the movie. I like Sacha as a comedian, smart guy, and I can actually see the resemblance to Freddie.
This has real possibilities but I doubt that this
will be among the numbers presented if the movie ever gets made.
I’ve always wondered if it’s why Queen never took off in the U.S. as they did in Europe.
You must be joking. Queen was HUGE in the U.S. in the late ’70′s until about 1981.
“…never took off in the U.S”? Are you KIDDING me? Queen was HUGE over here. Maybe not all of their singles hit as big here as they did in the U.K, but Queen is considered one of the greatest rock bands of all time. By Americans.
Queen’s been my favorite band since I was 14 and heard “Night At the Opera” in its entirety for the first time. That was more than 30 years ago. I’ve been waiting a long time for someone to make a movie about Freddie and the band. If they do it right, and do it well, it will be amazing.
