Disney just released what it’s calling the “first image” for GNOMEO & JULIET, the greatest love story ever told, starring garden gnomes. Adapted from Shakespeare, directed by Kelly Asbury (Shrek 2) with classic and original songs by Elton John, it features the voices of James McAvoy and Emily Blunt:
Editor-in-Chief Nikki Finke - tip her here.

Finally, an original idea in Hollywood. Can’t wait to see how this one ends.
Original? It’s based off of Romeo and Juliet.
*gives James sarcasm detection powers*
RE Jared: This looks like a comedic retelling. I think they will take liberties with the ending.
I hope so, Creek. Those little gnomes are so cute, I don’t wanna buy tickets just to see them die!
You mean the movie with Leonardo DiCaprio and Claire Danes? Oh, thanks for the spoiler, now I guess I know how it’ll end.
wow, they better show off another still quick because that one is awful. the words “awkward” and “inappropriate” are the first things that come to mind when i see that.
I don’t see anything wrong with the still. What is inappropriate about it? It is about gnomes…
Inappropriate? Seriously? It looks adorable.
Really? I think it looks great. Grow up.
That’s exaclty what I thought! And Im getting kinda sick of seeing all these Disney flicks doing the same over and over..
Well said, carg0. I would preface “awkward” and “inappropriate” with an unprintable adjective, too.
To the crazy person who thinks it is not appropriate, go back into your closet !
Whoa, that is just so darn cute!
I love it!
It’s got a fake wampum injum vibe to it, like in Peter Pan.
Just watched the full trailer for this and it looks REALLY bad. No wonder they stuck it under the Touchstone label instead of Disney. I’m also glad Ewan McGregor and Kate Winslet dropped out. I like both of them, and this would be a serious blemish on their filmographies.
So Juliet is a three year old child? Ew.
By Disney, I think you mean Touchstone.
And, yes, I realize Disney owns Touchstone, but its an import CGI film that was not created by Disney Animation, but rather Rocket Animation of Dublin, hence the Disney name is not on it. But it actually looks good based on the trailer.
Valiant and The Wild were Disney-branded.
Is this REALLY going to be an actual movie or is it just a Disney prank? One hopes the latter.
Nice! I didn’t know they were working on this project. I find it so original. And the photo is so cute.
Jeffrey Katzenberg immediately announced Dreamworks Animation’s newest summer blockbuster, “The MountDogs vs. The Catulets” with original songs by Lady Gaga.
At first glance I thought the characters were latino. I wonder why they don’t make mainstream animation movies like this with minority leads? Would white ppl be that turned off by a minority lead? I personally don’t think so and there have been countless examples over the years to prove this fact. A good example is The Karate Kid. While it is not an animation, every review/preview from various MSM outlets including international, tv spot etc was about an American kid and mom moving to China. As we all know that film was a success. Another film was Up with the Chinese kid. It just seems the opportunities are few and far between with no legitimate reason for being so. Princess and frog is another but that is specific to a particular time period and region. Not everyone can relate to the South. I’m referring to more modern sci-fi/fantasy projects like Despicable Me, Cloudy With A Chance of Meatballs etc.
Disney is the Devil, I wonder if Mercutio Dies…I wonder of Tybolt dies…I wonder if Juilet dies… I wonder if Romeo dies… oh shi– spoiler alert sorry
Touchstone Movie, not Disney.
So they basically combined Toy Story and Romeo and Juliet? And they took out the poetry in Romeo and Juliet, the main reason it’s a classic? I also need to point out they and some of their family members die, though it would be refreshing to see one of the gnomes “break” in the movie, Disney is likely to just trash these deaths altogether. So, it seems they’ll only keep the “boy meets girl, but their families don’t approve” part of it, and make up an ending.
I am looking for a movie for my son’s 8th birthday party in February. He is worried his friends will think it’s too girlie. What do you all think?
I’m surprised and just a little bit sick that anyone would support this film. Modern takes on classic stories are not new, but this retelling is absolutely revolting! How can anyone make a gnome-based version of Romeo and Juliet, when you just know they’re going to have a happily-ever-after ending, and live with themselves? This was a beautiful story of love and loss that has been turned into a red vs. blue gnome (slightly racist overtone, btw) heap of garbage. I swear there isn’t an ounce of originality left in the film industry!
