HBO has picked up dark comedy Hung for a third season with a 10-episode order to run in 2011.
Hung stars Thomas Jane as a down-on-his-luck Detroit high-school coach moonlighting as a male prostitute and Jane Adams as his rookie, poetry-loving pimp. The husband-and-wife duo of Dmitry Lipkin and Colette Burson created the show and are executive producing with the pilot’s director Alexander Payne, Michael Rosenberg, Scott Stephens, Noreen Halpern and John Morayniss for E1 Entertainment. Anne Heche, Eddie Jemison, Rebecca Creskoff, Gregg Henry, Sianoa Smit-McPhee and Charlie Saxton co-star. The penultimate episode of Hung‘s second season on Sunday averaged 2.5 million. Its season finale airs Sept. 12.

Bad show saved by being hammocked between True Blood and Entourage. No comedy, no real drama. Nothing for this show to actually hang it’s hat on.
HBO cancels Deadwood, but this garbage stays on. Must be dirt cheap.
Regarding Deadwood’s cancellation, I am sure it was about cost versus ratings.
Apparently, Hung has bigger numbers at a better production costs.
I am much happier with the Hung/Entourage block on HBO than Deadwood, but that’s probably because I like the stories and naked people doing odd things.
Um, did you watch Deadwood at all? Lots of naked people doing lots of odd things. And speaking in odd ways also. It was the best!
..And also lots of killing.
this show is freaking awesome! great news!
It’s not TV, it’s HBOver
I love this show!! great to hear it’s been renewed.
Great news!….Now we can see more of Lennie James on this, whose role as the Pimp is amazing…
great news, great cast and writing. This show is really about something, without Showtime like gimmicks. Lets all laugh at Cancer! ha!
I don’t know why this show is labeled a comedy. Is is not funny at all and is quite depressing.
2 words. DARK COMEDY. Not meant to be “hysterical” you must be dark and twisted to understand the humor in this show. Stop watching before you get a brain aneurysm from over thinking good TV.
A good show. Great cast. Different and maybe a little too challenging for some.
This show is HBO’s stinkiest effort to date. Unwatchable.
Blah. Hope this is the last season and HBO makes room for new stuff like Tilda and Enlightened.
Love this show. Great job HBO! Makes Weeds look like Happy Days.
A better name for this show would be “Dung” or “Limp.” This show is so boring, but it is a good cure for insomnia, so it’s not completely without merit!
They renew Hung but they couldn’t keep Carnivale which in the second season was pulling in pretty good numbers in the end when shit finally started moving.
Second season of Carnivale is still probably one of the best seasons of any show I have ever watched on television.
I dont care about budget. They could have worked something out.
Really is a lousy show. HBO has been running on fumes for a long time now when it comes to comedy.
Nothing for this show to actually hang it’s hat on.
I believe that this show is about an appendage that you actually CAN hang a hat on.
@brick
Deadwood been canceled. get over it
Great show! Make the show an hour long with more T & A.
Good for Detroit!
I would like to politely disagree with the first poster. “Hung” was okay last season, but it’s gotten fascinating this season as it’s no longer really about Thomas Jane = Manwhore, but about what was touched on in season one, how the economy is really fucking with people and their lives. Yeah, Thomas Jane is good on the show, but it’s all about Jane Adams’ Tanya who is one of the best characters on television, particularly as she spins out of control of late. I don’t watch “True Blood,” but “Entourage?!” Yeah, it’s gotten better this season, but last year was a friggin’ joke.
I kind of half-watched “Hung” last year, but it’s become a must-watch for my wife and I this season.
Agree completely. Last year, Hung was meh…this year it’s fantastic. I’m glad I found this article. I had heard rumors of it being cancelled. I’m thrilled. Entourage was a must see for me for years…the past couple it has gotten soooo repetitive. Hung far surpasses it in quality.
It’s the second best show on TV, right after Mad Men. Very frank and funny about America today — economically, sexually, family-wise. Thomas Jane is not getting the credit he deserves, Anne Heche never better, Jane Adams full-bore brilliant physical comedienne. And plenty of sex-positive nudity. Thank you, HBO!
You’re kidding me right??? This show is awful and unrealistic as hell (I have friends who are male escorts), the show has no sensuality what-so-ever.
When this show was in the promo stage a couple of years ago it seemed promising. But it was just BORING and the “pimp” is annoying and unattractive as can be. The show gives her way too much airtime. Whoever these people are that are writing this crap should be fired and replaced.
re “I have friends who are male escorts”… LOL.
The show sucks. But then, HBO ran ARLISS for years. HUNG must be paying its bills. One thing I know, HBO stays profitable relentlessly.
I absolutely love Hung. As to it being “realistic”, the characters “Ray” and “Tanya” have zero experience in their relative roles. They are making it their own and Ray is learning to overcome his awkwardness as he gets more “experience”.
It’s irrelevant whether the show is “real” like what your male escort friends experience. The show isn’t modeled on their life. It’s a tv show, not a documentary.
And one nice thing to see on this show, is that there are people who aren’t stock standard show-biz beauties. Jane Adams (Tanya), Charlie Saxton (Damon) and Sianoa Smit-McPhee (Darby), are fabulously cast.
I particularly like the character of Tanya, and Jane plays her to perfection.
I can’t wait for Season 3, and hope we get a few more seasons (as they are quite short seasons). It’s so nice to be able to watch something lighthearted and “different” instead of the umpteen reality and crime shows (and their re-runs) that flood the screen.
Why not? C-SPAN has been on the air for year and its loads more exciting.
Ouch.
Just when you thought it was safe to turn HBO back on (Boardwalk Empire).
I dunno, I dig the show… not as much as Entourage but I watch both — tho, with Hung, I find myself watching the clock more; it’s like, I don’t like watching it as much as I like having watched it…. Kinda like “no one likes to write but everyone likes to ‘have written’…”
This is one of the better 30-minute shows on HBO, but it needs a bit more focus.
