The rise of Hispanics in the U.S. is undisputable, even with the recession slowing down immigration. Their impact on U.S. TV viewership is growing, too. Nielsen just released an estimate projecting that 40% of new TV homes next year will be Latino. Overall, that is a 3% growth in the number of Hispanic TV households vs. .5% increase for African American TV homes. Meanwhile, top Spanish-language broadcaster Univision reported its first weekly win in the key adults 18-49 demographic, beating its English-language counterparts for the first time last week. Granted, the win involves an atypical week, one that included part of the Labor Day weekend that is especially slow for the traditional broadcasters. And Univision featured a strong Mexico vs. Ecuador soccer game and the finale of one of its telenovelas. Still, the win is impressive and was Univision’s 14th weekly victory in adults 18-34, a demographic once completely owned by Fox.
The English-language networks must be taking notice. There have been several attempts to do series about Latinos, including CBS’ Cane and the WB’s Greetings From Tucson, but none except ABC’s Ugly Betty lasted long. This coming season, there are two new series with Hispanic leads, NBC’s Outlaw starring Jimmy Smits and CBS’ Chaos starring Freddy Rodriguez.

I bet pretty soon the English-language networks will start incorporating Spanish-language series in their programming too! You can’t fight change – as a matter of fact, I think I’m going to jump back in class and beef up on my Spanish!
It’s a good idea. Knowing English and Spanish will get you from Alaska to Tierra del Fuego.
I doubt we’ll see Spanish language only series anytime soon — too much political heat for the networks, if the comments below are any indication — but count on an uptick in Spanglish.

I would have to disagree that none other than Ugly Betty have lasted long. The George Lopez Show had an all hispanic cast, went 6 seasons, and is now one of the most successful shows in syndication, airing at least 4 times per day on multiple stations including Nick at Nite and MTV Tres.

Actually, no you would not. Tibet is an autonomous region within the People’s Republic of China which is recognized as a separate state by most of the rest of the world, other than China. Tibet has its own separate language with various dialects that is completely different from the Chinese language.
That is a completely different situation from the former country of Persia, which has long since been universally-recognized as the country of Iran. No one, save for a smattering of Iranians residing in Beverly Hills who insist on calling themselves “Persian” for some odd reason, recognizes “Persia” as a separate country.

First of all, America is a continent! What that means is that anyone born from Brazil to Canada are AMERICANS. Only ignorant people don’t know that.
Second, Mexicans have roots in the southwest that go back before the Europeans invaded and later took half of Mexico.

It’s just not that simple and the blame does not fall solely on those that cross illegally. So unless any of you have real credentials on this issue stop lumping all Latinos as illegal, or preferring Spanish or mowing lawns. And to that comment about moving to another country, we are not the UK or Australia, we are the United States, a country which has a lush history of legal and illegal immigration that has woven a beautiful and diverse cultural tapestry. Wow, this is growing out of control. First and foremost, to address the issue with Univision and the Spanish speaking community. Congratulations Univision, you did it! (FYI, I am of Mexican descent but choose not to watch Univision, as far as I’m concerned some of their programming is just as offensive as BET as a whole.) You got a win. Now to address what other people are arguing about. Are high rating by channels like Univision and Telemundo really destroying this country? Is that what we’re fighting over? As soon as somebody mentions the population of spanish speaking individuals in this country, the issue of immigration is brought up. And to many people spanish speaking individual equals Mexican which in turn equals illegal. Why is that? I hate what this country’s become. This isn’t the America our founding fathers envisioned. We have become a nation devided by fear. Instead of dealing with problems in a logical and caring way, we point a finger and pass the blame (usually at the easiest targets we can find.) Take a look at our history, it has always been that way. First the Native Americans, then Africans, then the Irish, the Chinese, the Japanese, the communists or people accused of being communists, the gays, people of Middle Eastern descent, and now the flavor of the moment, Mexicans. It makes me mad when so called “patriots” go around saying the United States is the greatest nation in the world. No, we’re not because if we were we wouldn’t have to say it. We would know it. As Chris Rock once said, “There are only two types of people who have the right to call themselves Americans: soldiers and immigrants, because they are the only people who have risked their lives to be here.” Open your minds. Realize that we are all people. If we worked together we could not only strengthen this nation but help stop the bad elements from seeping in. Things would be a lot easier if Mexico became a part of the US but guess what?
