Jennifer Saunders, creator of TV comedy Absolutely Fabulous, started writing the book for stage show Viva Forever yesterday. Producer Judy Craymer is hoping this new Spice Girls musical, due to open in London’s West End 2012, will repeat the success of Mamma Mia! Her people tell me that Saunders’ treatment is “a glimpse of the underbelly of TV talent shows. It’s all about the pursuit of fame and a moving look at celebrity today”. The irony it was Simon Fuller, the Spice Girls’ manager and the man who’s probably more responsible than any other for the glut of TV talent shows, who first mooted the idea of a Spice Girls musical to Craymer. Fuller is partnering Craymer, the Spice Girls and Universal Music on the show. Blimey, talk about biting the hand that feeds you.

The Spice Girls?
Aren’t they my nana’s age now?
Will there be a senior citizen discount section at the play for their fans?
The 90s child in me is giddy about this, but not sure how much people outside my generation would want to hear Spice Girls songs again. If anybody can do it though it’s Jennifer Saunders!
Sooo great!!!
I love the Spice Girls and I couldn’t be more excited for this musical! I hope it’s gonna be successful!
I don’t understand this item. Is it a musical ABOUT the Spice Girls? Or starring the Spice Girls? Or a music using the songs of the Spice Girls, but with a plot separate from the Spice Girls story?
Also, I have never read the word “mooted” used as it is used in this item.
Randy, look up “mooted” online at the “Free Merriam Webster Dictionary”, the way it’s used here does make sense. Creative discussions in Hollywood can touch on a variety of issues,- beyond just original concepts for a project, hence the usage.
