Writer Jason Smilovic has set up a drama project at Fox. The project, titled The Detail, landed a script commitment with penalty after interest from multiple networks. It is executive produced by Elaine Goldsmith-Thomas, with Michael Dinner on board to direct. Produced by Sony TV, it is described as Ocean’s Eleven meets Revenge of the Nerds. It centers on a private detective, who, after being released from jail for a crime he didn’t commit, assembles a group of rejects, each with a unique talent, to form a detective agency and bring down his old business partner who framed him.
Additionally, Smilovic is doing a p.1 rewrite on the feature Replay, which Goldsmith-Thomas is producing for Warner Bros. The project is based on the 1987 fantasy adventure novel by Ken Grimwood about a failing 43-year-old radio journalist who dies and wakes up in his 18-year-old body in 1963 with his memories of the next 25 years intact. After recovering from the shock, he plays out missed choices. A movie adaptation of the book had been in the works for two decades, with several writers taking a crack at it, most recently, Richard LaGravenese and now Smilovic.
Smilovic has written 3 pilots for far: ABC’s Karen Sisco and NBC’s Kidnapped and My Own Worst Enemy, all of which have gone to series. (Enemy was a straight-to-series order.) All 3 pilots were directed by Dinner, who is under an overall deal at Sony TV. Detail also reunites Smilovic with Sony, the studio behind Kidnapped. In addition to Smilovic and Goldsmith-Thomas, who are executive producing, Tyler Mitchell, Smilovic’s partner at Dark & Stormy Entertainment, will serve as producer. Smilovic is repped by CAA and Madhouse Entertainment.

REPLAY is one of my favorite books. I would love to see that movie. Really excited about this.
I like me my Smilovic.
And I like me my EGT.
Who’s directing Replay?
FOR THE LOVE OF GOD… PLEASE STOP GIVING JASON SMILOVIC PILOT ORDERS. His ideas are nothing but re-hashed movie ideas. And they never make for good series television. ‘Kidnapped’? ‘My Own Worst Enemy’? UGH. Stop throwing money at this guy, and give someone new and fresh a shot.
This show sounds awesome. Who doesn’t love Revenge of the Nerds? Can’t wait for this one!
How many friggin shows is Fox buying anyway?
I LOVED REPLAY! What an incredible book. This will be EPIC on the screen.
Second that. Ken Grimwood’s novel would make a fantastic movie. The show sounds interesting too. Will def. look out for it.
No trying to be snarky, but how do you get 100 episodes out of a show like that? Sounds like a movie starring Vince Vaughn and Jon Heder.
REPLAY IS AWESOMMME! I READ THIS BOOK 10 YEARS AGO. VERY COOL. VERY EXCITED! WHEN IS FOX GOING TO MAKE IT AND WHO’S DIRECTING?
Extremely excited that REPLAY (excellent, worthy novel!) is being revisited. This book NEEDS to be a movie. Smilovic is a great writer and the perfect choice for it. Surely, the brainchild of Elaine Goldsmith-Thomas, who’s also supersmart, and gets impossible sh*t done. Great pairing.
This from a great writer like Jason Smilovic and a Network that likes to tout itself as the destination place for noisy and distinctive programming?
The Detail sounds pretty cool. Like the Nerds aspect. But I thought the same thing about Lone Star… Let’s hope FOX doesn’t ef it up.
I can’t wait for REPLAY….anything Elaine Goldsmith-Thomas does is golden!
Dinner didn’t direct My Own Worst Enemy. That one was done by Dave Semel.
REPLAY sounds awesome – the kind of hit movie people have seemed to forgot how to make.
JS and EGT will bring this one home.
didnt goldsmith do little black book.maid in manhattan-mona lisa smile?
how golden was that?
