EXCLUSIVE: I’ve learned that Jennifer Lopez had been negotiating for a guaranteed “go” motion picture and TV pilots at Fox to accompany an asked-for $15 million American Idol judging paycheck. But the powers-that-be who produce Idol – Fox, Fremantle, and 19 Entertainment — balked. It was her manager Benny Medina (whom she once fired) who first orchestrated the meeting with the Idol producers in June, and, by the end of July, J-Lo accepted the offer to be a new Idol judge. Since then, she, Medina and her producing partner Simon Fields have been trying to milk the gig for all they could get from the movie studio and broadcast network/television programmer to further her stalled career in the film/TV area. One bargaining chip they had, I can report, is that Simon Cowell already asked JLo to be a judge on the U.S. version of his The X Factor when it debuts on Fox in Fall 2011.
Among JLo’s demands, “she was angling for an overall deal at Fox, including a put picture, to keep the movie career going. But Fox said no,” one insider tells me. “In the old days, these were called a ‘vanity deal’ for good reason. They simply don’t exist today. Will Smith doesn’t have put pictures.” Another informant says she also was angling for TV development projects to replace the ones that had gone by the wayside when her career grew cold. Also, Team JLo was pissed that the Idol producers never discussed ahead of time their decision to offer a judging job to Aerosmith’s Steven Tyler. Though Team JLo kept threatening she’d bail if she didn’t get what she wanted, Fox called her bluff several times. That’s when real or imagined “Plan B” feelers put out to other talent would wind up in the media. It was left to returning Idol executive producer Nigel Lythgoe to deny these unconfirmed reports circulating that J-Lo was losing the job because of her diva demands.
I’m told that JLo and Fields did receive the overall Fox deal but with no film/TV commitments. Medina and JLo tried to hold out for the $15M Idol paycheck but couldn’t get it and wound up settling for $12M. “I think it was just positioning,” a source tells me. “In the end, she didn’t turn up her nose up at $12 million. I would have been very surprised if she had walked away. She needs the money. She lives very very well. It comes at a cost.” Amazing, since she was listed as the richest person of Latin American descent in Hollywood according to Forbes magazine, and parlayed the heyday of her media fame from 1999-2002 into fashion and perfume celebrity licensing ventures.
I’ve also learned that one reason the announcement of American Idol‘s new judges has been delayed is that JLo asked that it coincide with Island Def Jam’s dropping her first single in mid-September. She signed with that label on March 19th and is reportedly working on new material for Love? with RedZone Entertainment (Kuk Harrell, The-Dream and Tricky Stewart). It’s no secret that JLo’s singing and acting career has been on the skids after her 2010 movie The Back-Up Plan failed at the box office in the spring and she was dropped by her record company Sony Music Epic Records this past winter. The actress had many hits with Sony Music Epic Records, so it was a shock within the recording industry when her longtime label dumped her. The contract period had ended, and Lopez had fulfilled it with her last two singles. But in February Sony then cancelled her 7th studio album titled ”Love?”, which was supposed to come out in April and has yet to be released and featured production from Danja, Jim Jonsin, Darkchild, Chris n Teeb from Dropzone, and The Neptunes among others.

Trent,
You ignorant son of a bitch. Since when does someone have to have the talent they are judging?
Berry Gordy
David Geffen
a shit, need I go on you moron.
Cheerio.
That is so hypocritical of Simon Cowell who was notorious for criticizing those who could not sing, would ask Jennifer Lopez to be a judge on his new show. Asking a lip-syncer to judge is going against everything this man stood for when he was a judge on American Idol. How dare he offer a job like that to someone that wouldn’t even be able to pass an AI audition. He spent years and years on AI putting people down and humiliating them because of their lack of vocal talent, and turns around and asks someone like Jennifer Lopez who can’t even get on stage and sing live without using pre-recorded vocals to judge others. I am shocked and appauled.
good upgrade from Paula Abdul.
will probably help her career, humanizing her a bit weekly, after a decade of being a silent face in paparazzi pictures.
First of all, thank Nikki for this well informed article. I read from beginning to end. You are a real journalist. You gave me info all connect to her career.
Now regarding JLo… I don’t get it why she was even considered. She is not a great singer. Unfortunately, I bought “On the 6″ CD because of “Feel So Good” and “Waiting For Tonite” dance singles. I like to dance. But otherwise she sucks.
Don’t worry AI… I stopped watching years ago. Adding Ellen was stupid and pathetic.
Benny Medina is a trip. Why are you such a diva?
Oh JLo dropping Medina and then rehiring him tells me she could not find any other to represent her.
Fox might as well had hired a muppet instead of JLo and saved themselves 11,999,999.00 dollars.
I won’t watch with Jell-O on the show. The woman has no talent nor personality.
Just when u think that J-Blow is done, she creeps back into the media. She’s like a bad case of athlete’s foot that never goes away. She can’t sing, can’t act and has no talent – a triple threat!
So her 20 music Fans, 30 TV Fans, 40 Movie Fans, and 50 Perfume Fans are going to put the nails in AI’s coffin?
Glad she’s moved out the Summit- she’s so rude and should thank her lucky nouveau-rich stars that she’s no longer bumping and grinding in knee pads – Fly girl style! Gwen S. is a much nicer to have in the neighborhood.
I guess “Jenny from the Block” is above that past life!
Ummmm…Diva demands or trying to get the deal for herself? What was the point of name calling here?
I REALLY like Idol. But J-Lo (and Stephen Tyler) are a mistake. They had observations from a Producer, an Exec, and a performer (Paula) and then from a writer (Kara). They need to keep that variety of views. I would LOVED to have seen David Foster, or even Clive Davis. Now THAT would have added gravitas to the show again. Right now, unless they luck into a Carrie Underwood, Adam Lambert, or Kelly Clarkson, I fear they may be headed downhill.
Clive Davis? He’s a doddering, senile old fool who still hears Whitney Houston’s voice as he heard it 20 years ago as opposed to the reality of her voice today.
the dude can’t even tell when he has filled up his depends undergarments with poo.
Thank the original maker Clive Davis was not signed at this point in his crypt keeper phase of his life.
As for David Foster? Does lite pop fm type music appeal to the 12-30 years that are the target demo of Idol? I think not.
I worked at Fox back in the In Living Color days when JLo was just a “fly girl” on the show. The only memorable thing about her at the time was her butt. Go back and rent some of those episodes, she is hardly recognizable. Money can definitely buy looks.
I will give her this though, even back then, in the early 90′s, she knew what she wanted. She positioned herself to be an “actress.” She got herself on some Michael Weithorn show that Fox had on the air at the time. She played a cashier in a grocery store. With that said, I think she will be horrible as a judge. Her dance songs of 10 years ago are now outdated, her acting talent is worthy of a Hallmark movie at best
Not sure why people are baggin’ J-Lo’s singing talent…she sings better than Paula Abdul! Also to further compare her with Abdul, J-LO has barely been battling obscurity for maybe 3 years…Abdul was like off the map at least ten years before she landed the Idol gig. Not to sound like I’m bagging on Abdul either, because she is pretty cool, but I fail to see how Lopez lack qualifications….
Ah, but Paula was a drunk which made it fun to watch! Maybe JLo will do a Kanye and have a big ol bottle of Rum on the table next to her. Simon was the only judge that knew what they were talking about. That’s why he drives a Bugatti and Paula has a Buick.
You’re funny if you think Paula isn’t one of the highest paid stars in TV. Her new show could be a hit but regardless she’ll get a huge payday.
that was the original title. if you actually worked in hollywood you’d probably know that
American Idol is in it’s last year…. The producers have heads up their ….. The show is about the contestants, not judges. The future singers are the stars, not JLO and washed up Arrow Smith. This show will drop in the ratings, like Obama in the polls…..both are done. ABC, NBC and CBS must be laughing how FOX is so stupid, not to guide old Simon Cowell. Unbelievable!!!!!!
I’ve worked in radio for many years. I wonder if J-Lo will teach AI contestants her record company’s secret for getting her “songs” airplay: mass payola.
Her last series she produced was “South Beach” for UPN. Fox should not be shy and really put her talents to the test.
All of you people sound really jealous. She made a buss deal for some good money-more than any of you will ever see in your life. Good for her!
Only Arschlochs grovel after money.
I stopped watching Lopez when she cast Hanoi Jane in one of her movies. Then later she did a stand-up comic routine ripping Sarah Palin.
Jennifer Lopez IS the most beautiful and sexy woman around.
I would watch the show just to see her.
19 really screwed the pooch on this one…
Shania Twain and David Foster would have been great for Idol. They need people who know and have worked in the business from other areas besides just singing. Too, they would have worked great with Randy Jackson as judges.
I have zero interest in JLo as an artist or actor, but it reeks of sexism to deem this “diva demands”. It’s a negotiation and, in addition to cash, she tried to get something that might help further her career. What’s wrong with that?
Whether she is worth any of it is beside the point – no one who makes this much money deserves it, but it’s a business.
I think J-Lo and American Idol go well together. They have both always been overrated and they are both past their glory days. I may die of laughter if she ends up like M.C. Hammer with all that lavish spending too.
“Put pictue”?
She’s getting old and pretty soon will be working for “Put Out” pictures. (Just like the old days…)
Greedy cabrona!
