TORONTO: The sexy part of the Toronto Film Festival is the acquisition deals and especially the unveiling of Oscar-caliber films. But pictures are also being put together. Among them: Matthew McConaughey and Emile Hirsch will star in Killer Joe, a black comedy that William Friedkin is directing for Nicolas Chartier’s Voltage Pictures. Filming begins November 8th in New Orleans. Friedkin is teaming again with Tracy Letts (Bug) who’s scripting the pic based on his play about a Dallas detective who is also a hired killer. Chartier produces with Scott Einbinder of ANA Media. UPDATE: Another Toronto title being shopped is A Dead Man In Debford, a Little Film Co pic that stars Brighton Rock‘s Sam Riley and Ray Winstone.

Odd for you to leave out the fact that “Killer Joe” is a well-known play — Letts is adapting his own work here. Hard to know why anyone would get excited about re-teaming Letts and Friedkin after “Bug” (another one of Letts’ plays).
“Bug” was an interesting effort, but honestly it was just a filmed play. With no one else driving the bus, I’m afraid that’s what will happen here.
My thoughts exactly. Friedkin’s last great movie was 25 years ago – “To Live and Die in LA”.
?? It specifically says “Friedkin is teaming again with Tracy Letts (Bug) who’s scripting the pic based on his play about a Dallas detective who is also a hired killer.” As far as BUG being a filmed stage play, that was almost a requirement: by necessity it took place in one claustrophobic motel room. There was no way to “open up” that play without completely changing it. This play is another ballgame entirely.
great script, great director, and a cool cast!
It will be cool to see these two together. I’m interested in seeing how Matthew is in this film.
Great play, interesting and unique story. Terrible idea to attach Freidkin who is so washed up I forget he’s even still around. After what he did to Letts’ BUG, I’m surprised he’d allow him to botch another one of his plays.
Billy is at his best with black comedy and multi-layered crime drama. Hell, his whole career has been a black comedy, and no one is better at showing three sides of a coin. Plus the very idea that a Master director gets to make a drama with actors instead of CGI is promising.
Great play – guess they couldn’t get the cast from the Chicago production, that’s too bad.
I liked what Friedkin did with Letts’ BUG – it’s such a perverted play, and Friedkin brought a great sense of claustrophobia and doom. I saw KILLER JOE off broadway years ago – I ended up going because I got free tickets, had never heard of it – and I’ll never forget it. Another perverted play, but Letts’ writing is so great, the characters are so twisted and the climax is so white trashy violent, I’ll never forget it. I bet this is going to rock, and it will be a real departure for McConaughey. His character is NOT a nice guy.
Friedkin is a good adapter of plays. Remember how good his BOYS IN THE BAND was in like 1970? That was a one set play, and as a movie it was never static, even being basically word for word from the stage original. His TV adaptation of 12 ANGRY MEN was the same type of thing.
Top the person who called Friedkin “washed up” – say what you will, but this is an Oscar winning director you’re talking about. Be nice. He went out of favor when he made CRUISING, but even that, despite the mess it was, had moments of real terror.
This is so lucky charm that i ever had.
