BREAKING: A press conference is skedded for tomorrow morning, with Lionsgate co-chairman/CEO Jon Feltheimer and Grupo Televisa chairman/CEO Emilio Azcarraga. Lionsgate will team with Spanish-language media company Televisa to launch Pantelion Films, a joint venture that will target the fast-growing market of Hispanic moviegoers and release 8 to 10 movies per year. The first picture, From Prada To Nada, will be released in January. The expectation is Pantelion will produce half of its slate and acquire the other half. Jim McNamara, head of Panamax Films and a former Telemundo president/CEO, will be Pantelion chairman, while Lionsgate international exec Paul Presburger will be Pantelion CEO.

Smart.
what a wonderful idea! A good way to target the hispanic immigrant (both legal and illegal)market.
“Hispanic” market encompasses South and Central America and Spain in addition to the US market. Not everything is about you or about Main Street USA. Try to think globally my friend.
There are more countries on earth than there is lint in your navel. Perhaps you should put down the Chees Whiz and invest in an encyclopedia to help expand your mind.
Will the films be in Spanish or English?
Val, you suck. All latinos are not immigrants and all white people are not legal.
well Spanish is the language of Hispanic immigrants is it not?
Val, I was born in the US. So was my Mom, and my Great Grandmother came here LEGALLY in the early 40′s. Not all Immigrants (legal and illegal) are Latino. Not all Latinos are Mexican.
Which brings me to my next point, it’s not easy to target Latino audiences. For example, what Puerto Rican/Dominican/Mexican/Cuban people like and find funny varies from their specific cultures. So it’s a little tougher to crack than one might think.
But kudos to Lionsgate for even trying.
I like the news of it. Your right and also in the demographics of there areas also. The Texas interests are far different than the California,Florida,New York wants. I do see actors that aren’t as heavy in the full Spanish type acting. And also of mixed heritades getting in interest. As long as it not done to in everyone looking like JLO or Selena I’m for it.
Check out “The Funny of Latin Dance” by comic Bill Santiago. It does great with all Spanish speaking audiences.
Yeah, hopefully not all will suck…
the mexican movie industry is dying (if not already dead). that’s why it needs money from hollywood (suckers!) to make their spanish-language films.
Very smart move for Felt at the right time. The market is young and needs to expand to meet the growing audience and potential revenue. Should be successful if they keep costs down and not go after big market budgets.
i’m happy about this deal…more films geared toward hispanic audiences as a whole and some of these pics could snatch up a wider audience if done right!
they tried this abt 5 yrs ago, starting w/distribution, picking up films that failed at the BO. let’s hope they’ve learned something since then……………
If they make these movies for a price, they will make money and develop new talent – solid business model. Mexican money, Lionsgate distribution, and cheapo Latino talent. Me gusta!
These are english language films for the latin audience. Spanish language films, unless their in competition for an Oscar as best foreign language film, are as a business model completely dead. The big market is english speaking latinos who are westernized and happy to be so. All this talk about illegal and legal is so pedestrian. This is a good idea for an exploding marketplace. Now let’s see if they pick good films to make. That’s what will matter in the end.
I’m liking like Stephanie Hunt. She is half Puerto Rician. I liked her in FNL and her indie movie Love and Tampourines. A really good musician also. Her and her sister both are top violinist around. She is in the new episodes of Californication with Zoe’Kravitz as musicians in a band the daughter starts.
