Fox has handed a series commitment to the Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci-produced adaptation of the graphic novel Locke & Key, which is eyed for a potential summer run. The project, which will be written and run by Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles creator Josh Friedman, hails from 20th Century Fox TV, Kurtzman and Orci’s 20th TV-based K.O. Paper Products and DreamWorks TV where the project originated on the feature side.
Based on Joe Hill’s comic published by IDW Publishing, Locke & Key tells the story of Nina Locke and her three children, Tyler, Kinsey, and Bode, who survive an unspeakable horror and attempt to rebuild their lives at Keyhouse, their family home in Lovecraft, Massachusetts. It is a mysterious New England mansion, with fantastic and transformative keys hidden inside its walls that are also being sought by a hate-filled and relentless creature with ties to the Locke family’s past who will stop at nothing to accomplish his sinister goals. Friedman, Kurtzman, Orci, K.O’s Heather Kadin, DreamWorks TV’s Justin Falvey and Darryl Frank as well as IDW CEO Ted Adams are executive producing.

Locke & Key is by far one of the greatest comic book stories I’ve ever read. I was thrilled this was getting looked at by Hollywood (I knew it would eventually) but I have to say I’m much happier it’s going to be on tv rather than in theaters. There’s a lot to tell and the comic isn’t even finished yet. I can’t wait to see this.
Finally something different than police and medical dramas. I’ll tune in for this one.
Wait, so you’re saying you’re tired of N-CSI-House-Anatomy?
Great book!
Great stuff out!
Great story.
Josh the F Man couldn’t be a better choice in running this.
This’ll make up for the idiocy in cancelling Sarah.
Run Josh, run.
Write on, right on.
I’m sorry, but it’s a shit comic.
I tried, but it failed.
It’s a fantastic series, as the apple did not fall far from the tree (Hill is the son of Stephen King). The issue before the most recent one was one of the most effective portrayals of grief I have seen in books/comics/film period.
Comics are incredibly freeing storywise. It’s less people from inception to publication.
If this is half as horror-oriented as the plot synopsis makes it sound, it’s already in trouble. What’s the last horror-centric TV series to do any good?
uh True Blood?
It’s a terrific property and qorthy of adaptation even though it only sells around 20,000 copies of each edition. The worry here shoukd be about FBC’s ability to develop and air something that is even remotely like the comic book, since they’re having a modicum of success with Human Target which is NOTHING like the comic. It’s also starting to feel like AMC’s momentum with the Walking Dead is influwncing every TV company to develop more indie comics properties.
I met on this project when it was a feature at K/O. Mandy Safavi was the exec who brought it in and was singlehandedly championing it until it got on Steven’s radar. Gonna be a great series, but it’s a shame that credit wasn’t given to the person who discovered it. Too bad, she’s a class act. Can’t say the same for Hollywood.
