Media Rights Capital and M Night Shyamalan have set the next thriller to be made under their Night Chronicles banner. And once again, Shyamalan won’t be directing. Instead, The Last Exorcism‘s Daniel Stamm will helm Reincarnate, scripted by Chris Sparling (Buried). Production will begin in 2011, and MRC is producing with Shyamalan. This latest is bout a jury haunted by supernatural forces while deciding the fate of an accused murderer. Today’s deal comes on the eve of this weekend’s release of Devil, the first pic from Night Chronicles, formed to generate genre films hatched by Shyamalan which he doesn’t have to helm.

This was once called “Twelve Strangers.”
“While deciding the fate of an accused murderer, a jury is haunted by supernatural forces that hold the key to the case.” Interesting storyline. Jury deliberation flicks can be pretty compelling (12 Angry Men being one of the greats).
Lot’s of thrillers in the pipeline. Demographics playing a roll?
But really, does anyone think that this will be any better than any of his last few films. Seems the Nightman peaked with “The Sixth Sense” (some might say “Signs”), but it really doesn’t matter now.
This guy’s been riding on fumes for years and he keeps trying to milk his “genre”, but lacks the skills of a good story-teller and director.
He will continue to be financed until his films no longer make decent profits. At that time MRC will dump him.
WHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAT???
NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!
HAHAHAHA yes maybe Wahlberg will do a cameo with his famous line from The Happening.
The clip on YouTube is hilarious!!!
To the studio: PLEASE PLEASE do NOT put “M. Night Shyamalan Presents…” in front of the next movies in the Night Chronicles!!!
When his title card came up in the “Devil” trailer the entire theater erupted in laughter and groans.
Three friends said the same thing happened in their theaters.
I’ve seen reports online (like in these comments threads) about the same thing.
I know that Airbender made money but that was a CHILDREN’S MOVIE (let’s be honest) and based on a very successful property.
These Night Chronicles movies have real potential — M. Night knows genre, has story skills and knows how to shoot on a budget so he’s the perfect producer for low-budget horror features.
Just don’t ruin it by throwing around his vanity plate. This is the quickest way to make this series an instant joke. If Devil doesn’t get rave reviews and kick ass at the box-office (and what are the odds it will?) it will instantly be dubbed a SHAM-A-LAMMA-DING-DONG BOMB.
The filmmakers deserve better.
Yeah, people laughed in my theater too when Shyamalan’s name came up during the trailer for Devil.
No, it’s a good bet to position it as “M Night Shyamalan Presents”, because he’s a brand name at this point. Hitchcock was a brand name and after having 2 financial and critical bombs (at the time) for The Wrong Man and Vertigo, he was considered tired and old hat. But then he had 2 hits in a row with North By Northwest and Psycho. Psycho is a good example because it was extremely low budget but everyone had to see it because the negative side of the Hitchcock name was quickly forgotten… until the next bomb.
I’m saying all this from a financial POV knowing that Night isn’t directing these films and that Devil is going to have a narrative of an 9 minute short stretched out over 90. But if it’s on okay movie that entertainments, the Night name will pay off with the general movie-going public.
Please don’t put the “brand” of M. Night on the same level as Hitchcock. That is an insult to Hitchcock. That is like trying to equate the Yugo brand with Rolls Royce. One brand is just a cheese fest and the other is quality.
M. Night’s brand is damaged. He needs to do some movies where he is not the branded selling point until he gets a few hits under his belt again that are not tied to a children’s property.
You have to look closer at your film history. Hitchcock’s “brand” was badly damaged a few times but he bounced back. Also I never said Hitchcock and Night are artistically comparable, I was talking about the financial aspect of the “M Night Presents”. Night’s films have made around a couple of billion dollars worldwide.
Can Night compare to Hitch artistically? No.
Good lord, I saw the preview for Devil, heard his name and immediately thought “crap” and stopped paying attention. He needs to go away.
Isn’t this basically a remake of Shocker?
Completely agree with not putting M. Night’s name all over his films. Devil looks compelling enough without anything like that and is apt to scare way more people away than it draws. It’s definitely not fair for the actual filmmakers. Reincarnate looks like another film that does not need nor want his name plastered all over its marketing. It has a great premise that should translate to a marketable film based on premise alone.
The movie is only 80 minutes WITH credits. They probabaly could have made it 90 if it was on an escalator.
So… my comment comes 4 months after this article and other comments and I wonder how many of you actually saw Devil? Its a pretty damn good movie (not the greatest ever). Some of you have foot-in-mouth right now I bet.
And M. Night is only really producing these movies, not writing or directing (he only has ‘story’ credit for Devil), which was enough to lead me to believe that Devil was going to be alright.
At least M. Night learned some lessons… rather than continue to drop bombs, he produces films to showcase new and upcoming directors? Its too bad George Lucas is too big of douche to do the same thing, or else the SW prequels might actually have been decent. I look forward to Reincarnate now after seeing Devil.
Everyone has their own preferences but I also believe people like to be harsh critics to make themselves feel better about something.
I feel the same way. And like everything in life people make mistakes, which they learn and grow from. Those people that are so harsh to others need to look at their own life’s.
I love M. Night’s movies, ALL of them!! People that don’t like his work simply don’t understand it! They expect the same crap that’s been done a thousand times. Just because there’s no real monsters in “The Village” or a bunch of footage of aliens killing people in “Signs” they get disappointed. I love him. He’s a breath of fresh air.
