Most episodes of the AMC series Mad Men are directed by their in-house stable of regulars, but every now and then they open it up to outsiders. Last year, they got Barbet Schroeder to direct the poignant Kennedy assassination episode. Tonight, they’ve tapped Lynn Shelton, the Indie Spirit Award-winning director of Humpday, the bromantic comedy which premiered at Sundance. Shelton, by the way, has just signed on with Focus Features to direct an adaptation of Then We Came To The End, an adaptation of the Joshua Ferris novel that will be produced by Ted Hope and Anne Carey’s This Is That banner. It’s the story of a bunch of copy writers at a Chicago ad agency who face extinction when the dot com bubble bursts in 2001. Shelton also directs $5 Cover, an MTV webisode series that follows the trials and tribulations of 13 Seattle bands. The series premieres in November.

This is the best hour of television ever
The show was *very* strong this week.
Humpday is excellent. It’s fantastic to see talent rewarded.
This is the most compelling show on TV today.
Lynn did a fantastic job tonight. Humpday was great, and beyond her stellar work, she also happens to be down-to-earth and sweet. No, I do not represent her.
Umm did any of you actually SEE Humpday? It was absolutely awful. There is no way you could buy the notion that the two guys were best friends, thus undermining the entire conceit of the film. It was simply poor and sorry to say it she’s not a very talented story teller.
I happened to like Humpday. Very much, actually. But opinions vary, and that’s cool. What’s not cool is taking an optimistic article about an independent filmmakers success story (a pretty rare thing these days), and using that as a platform to rattle off your own opinions and judgment. And all on the wild assumption that you just happen know all there possibly is to know about good story telling, and we actually give a damn. So sit back down, relax, and have a coke and a smile.
Um, Yoyo-brain, as a filmmaker myself whose films have qualified for the Academy Award byu their wins in numerous festivals, I’d offer that writing and directing ANY feature is a daunting and difficult challenge and hers – that is HUMPDAY, and yes I saw it – was an extremely well directed NO BUDGETER film… Whether its content was to your taste is an argument and discussion worthy of these grumbling posts, but do not deny this woman her real and bonafide talents until, Yoyo, you put up a film of your own making for us to all deem worthy… or label as dogshit, which something tells me it would be.
I think that within five or six episodes, Don Draper will be dropping acid and playing a bongo drum.
Lynn is so talented and complete awesome to deal with. She deserves everything that comes her way.
