Remember how in the 1980s and 1990s standup comedians ruled the comedy series world as the broadcast networks were clamoring to develop sitcoms with them? Well, it’s been awhile since the last big one based on standup, Everybody Loves Raymond, went off the air, and now networks are looking in other places for fresh writing/acting talent. NBC is taking a chance this development season with a high-concept comedy from up-and-coming comic Mo Mandel. The project, produced by 3 Arts, chronicles what a group of twentysomethings do in the last five years of their lives before the Earth is destroyed by a meteor. Mandel may also co-star if his script goes to pilot. Mandel broke out at the Montreal Just For Laughs comedy festival and has pilot acting experience after co-starring on Fox’s Strange Brew last season. WME/3 Arts-repped Mandel, who recently taped his first stand up special for Comedy Central, currently tours, and recurs on Chelsea Lately.

Mo is funny. He’s also a take no prisoners and would F&*$ his best buddy to make it type of guy, which is not a bad thing in this business. He’s got tons of hangers on ie; comics who hang around him trying to be as cool as he is, but aren’t as funny. He’s much funnier than Nick Thune and has a better chance of making it. It’s that dopey guy thing that often works like Ray and Kevin.
Wow ur such an insider, in fact the ultimate insider. Do you guys all hang out together at The Woods? You’re really in with the LA comics.
“F&*$ his best buddy to make it”? What a shitty person.
NBC makes really good choices… did you see outsourced tonight? (sarcasm)
You are comparing this guy to Nick Thune? Thats like comparing the Yankees and the Astros… The Astros might have a good year but they aren’t the Yankees. Nick Thune is the Yankees.
so if it’s the biggest thing since friends, what happens after 5 seasons post-meteor?
…And the scientist miscalculated and the meteor misses Earth but all those wacky hijacks made them better people. There, I saved everyone five years.
ugh, more high concept garbage. what ever happened to writers with unique comic voices? it’s all hook and no worm.
Because execs don’t know what a unique comic voice is. They trust re-treads and has-beens instead of giving the new guy a shot.
I have no vested interest here (and I’m a writer) but isn’t giving the new guy a shot EXAXTLY what they’re doing here?
Wasn’t this the plot of a Canadian film from about eight years ago called ‘Last Night?’
I saw that. Not same plot. It was cool but a downer. It only took place over one night. Just one night! It was a drama not a comedy.
Beautiful film, though.
Starred the equally beautiful Sandra Oh.
Damn. I pitched that exact same idea as a drama all over town under the name “Unstoppable.”
Horrible idea for a really funny dude. He should have waited for something that wasnt as dopey or something that wasn’t at NBC where they don’t know comedy.
Uh, HE pitched it to nbc. Nobody’s making him write garbage. Actually, he hasn’t even written anything yet. Nobody’s making him pitch garbage.
They had a few of the most acclaimed comedies of the last decade.
It’ll be more like…. the meteor arrived early, 4 year, 11 months and 2 weeks early, thus destroying the earth and knocking this show off the air after 2 lame episodes
Sounds like the ABC Family series “Three Moons Over Milford” from a few years back.
That one, the meteor already hit. Split the moon into threes. Not the events before
There is already a film with exact same plot entitled “Apocalypse CA”
The same exact plot is everywhere in Hollywood. It’s called Jung’s collective unconscious. Responsible for parallel development everywhere or just consult the news cycle.
As for Apocalypse CA, I saw the website. Looks like they just cast bar patrons from Happy Endings for it.

Deadline’s Newest SuperVillian
i’m already doing fat geeks in space, with a kid, and dirty jokes.
A good sign if you are in the comedy world, but there are TONS of funnier, better prepared comics.
I see this kid all over town, out every night working on his sets, despite the fact that he’s a 20-something who just sold a network show. Though he’s young, don’t know if there’s anyone more prepared or more deserving than this guy.
Wait, you’ve seen him all over town in the one day since he sold the pitch?
So it’s basically “12 Monkeys” but funny. I get it.
Wait, what?
mo wouldn’t screw over his best friend like that. He’s an edgy comedian but a good guy.
