The BBC report explored the way gays and lesbians are shown on British television. And of the one-fifth of the British population uncomfortable seeing gays on TV, 9% of those 2,000 sampled claim they are “very uncomfortable” about it. Gay activist group Stonewall tells me it’s not surprised that homophobes feel like this – gays and lesbians are just as unhappy about the way they’re portrayed by the BBC. “Gays and lesbians are often portrayed in a sensational and unrealistic way, which can be just as upsetting for straight people as well as gays,” Stonewall tells me. “Broadcasters have a responsibility to recognise there are gay and lesbian licence fee payers who have been let down for years by the way they’ve been portrayed.” Stonewall’s own research shows that the BBC’s portrayal of gay people has rarely been positive or realistic. It published a report in July that found out of 39 hours of BBC1 programmes watched by young people, only 44 seconds portrayed gays positively.

It’s hard to think so many Brits can be closed-minded when their own country is ruled by an old queen.
ROFLMAO! And I’m not even gay! No! Really! I’m not! Not even bi-curious!
Most decent people do not like or dislike the word gender class, but to insult the Queen in this manner is uncalled for. Remember it was not that many years ago this subject was kept behind closed doors, not that I am suggesting a return to an era were most gays were discriminated against i.e. queer bashing etc but with an attitude such as yours it does not help.
F#@k the royal family! Yeah, I said it. What right do they have to sit on a throne and rule over other people. They weren’t elected to anything.
“so many Brits” – is that percentage that many? I shudder to think what the percentage would be if that same survey was done in the U.S.
I’d be surprised if it wasn’t almost double.
Arliss Howards “Kale Ingram” in “Rubicon” is the best character in todays Tv: smart, cool, tough – bravo!
Hey, when you think about it, that’s not bad considering where those statistics would have fallen as little as ten years ago.
1 out of 5 viewers are not uncomfortable because homosexuals are not portrayed well. Most of the 20% are uncomfortable because they disagree with the lifestyle. Stonewall is trying to spin it. You can portray homosexuals positively and their still not going to like it.
I think by lifestyle you mean sexual orientation.
While I agree that the portrayals of LGBT characters are often over the top and purely caricatures of real people, one need only look at four suicides around the country in the past month of young people who are harassed because they’re perceived to be gay, to realize how much homophobia is still out there.
Look at that Asst Atty General in Michigan who seems to have made it his one-man crusade to harass the gay man who happens to be student body president at his alma mater. He’d be part of the “1 in 5″ crowd.
So, sadly, no surprise about that stat. Living in LA or NY, one easily forgets the bible belt hatred that’s out there.
:: Living in LA or NY, one easily forgets the bible belt hatred that’s out there. ::
Oh really. I’d say the “hatred” is everywhere, just more gays in any big city, some safety in numbers. Look at bashing and hate crime stats in NY or LA – very high. The kid that just jumped off the GW Bridge – was he in the “Bible Belt”? If one is gay (I can tell you’re not) you’re always aware of potential hate right beneath the surface. NY, LA or Dothan, Alabama. Get clued in pal.
Interesting you close out your comment with “one easily forgets the bible belt hatred that’s out there” insinuating your disdain for people with different views as yours.
Yeah, he’s stating his disdain for people who are helpful. Great observation.
The other 4 are turned on so why all the bitching
so why don’t the one fifth get off their fat asses and change the channel?
I.think this is encouraging, at least we are evolving. I wonder what the polls would say in the U.S. ? We are multi cultural people, its about the person not who we love
part of it is, you don’t just see gay characters, you see GAY CHARACTERS YOU ARE MEANT TO HAVE A POSITIVE FEELING ABOUT BECAUSE HEY GUYS THIS IS PERFECTLY NORMAL IT’S NOT DYSFUNCTIONAL AT ALL AND IF YOU THINK OTHERWISE YOU’RE A FUCKING BIGOT.
as in last night’s whatever crime drama in which the gay reference is to some ex-husband we’re meant to hate who “went out and beat up gays” or something like that–just so you know, if you think homosexuality is abnormal then obviously you are the type of person who drives around looking for fags to pummel
Hi,
All that stat shows is how easily the masses are able to be propagandised to be conditioned and manipulated to accept anything given enough media/mind-share however much an outlier initially – most people are lemmings, whether relating to illegal wars, Porn or Perverted “Lesbian Gays Bi-Sexuals and Transexuals”!
Kind regards,
Q
In the words of Elizabeth Taylor: if it weren’t for gays, there wouldn’t be a Hollywood.
The other way to read the data is to say that 80% of viewers essentially have no issue with seeing gays on TV.
The recent suicide of a Rutgers University student in New Brunswick, NJ, who had been subject to bullying by students from affluent New Jersey suburbs should put to rest this silly and lazy myth that homophobia is a problem unique to “the Bible Belt.”
Gays are a small demographic group. Less than 10% of the population, more like 4-5%, according to most surveys outside Gay Groups.
I would suggest that the number of people in Britain who dislike gayness shoved in their faces all day, in the media Kultursmog, is far higher than 20% and fear of social disapproval made the number artificially low.
Most non-gay people don’t care who is gay or not, they’d rather that folks keep their sexuality private. Cialis and suchlike ads are probably equally offensive as having gay conduct shoved in your face. Most folks would rather not have to deal with sex shoved in their faces, 24/7, gay or straight. The PC line of every gay person being a noble individual with no faults is also annoying. Since gays are as flawed as everyone else. People hate lies preached as truth.
