EXCLUSIVE: Paula Patton has landed that female lead role that Deadline told you she was testing for, alongside actresses Lauren German and Kristen Kreuk. I’m told that Patton will play a young operative who works with Tom Cruise’s Ethan Hunt character. The film will not be called Mission: Impossible 4. Cruise and JJ Abrams, who hatched the project together, always envisioned it as a franchise reboot. The film begins production in the fall with Brad Bird directing Cruise, who’ll co-star with The Hurt Locker‘s Jeremy Renner in what was another hotly contested role. Paramount co-finances the $140 million film with David Ellison’s Skydance banner. It marks the first film for Cruise and Paramount since he left the studio after generating over $3 billion in worldwide grosses for Paramount.

THE NEXT HALLE BERRY.
Why does she have to be the next Halle Berry, cause she’s black? Why can’t she just be the next hottest piece of movie siren on the planet? I guess that does make her the next Halle Berry.
they are saying that because she is light skinned. it’s basically racism but the poster doesn’t even know it.
Correct. Because she is the new Hottest Woman Ever. And the roles that would once go to a younger Halle are now going to go to her. Maybe I am just a crazy racist though. A crazy black self-hating racist.
Well, there ARE a lot of you out there. A little shocked you didn’t use the obnoxious label “African American” though.
I’m sorry — was this a counterpoint of some kind? MAYBE it’ll take me a month or so to catch up to what your point is.
Yes, it does.
Major CONGRATS to the very beautiful and talented Paula!!!!
Re: the discussion: I was kind of thinking Zoe Saldana was already the next Halle. And for the record, calling someone “the next” is merely an industry term of art that has been used in Hollywood since the silent era. It merely means an actor who possesses qualities that remind the audience of a previons actor –as Redford was repeatedly called the “next Paul Newman” early in his career (guess that meant those saying it were “racist” against gorgeous, blue-eyed, blonde-haired white guys, huh?)
Some of you can’t lift a rock without seeing “racism” under it. Must be taxing to carry that incredibly debilitating chip around on your shoulder everywhere you go. You’d be shocked at how much higher you could soar were you to simply let it go.
Halle may have won an oscar (for going nude many would say) but her career is not particularly successful. Halle is a very weak actress and is primarily known for her stunning looks and more so her abusive and cheating partners and why she has difficulties with finding and keeping a man.
I hope Paula has a more fruitful career path. At least her personal life is stable.
The impossible mission is to get someone to see a Tom cruise film.
It marks the first film for Cruise and Paramount since he left the studio after generating over $3 billion in worldwide grosses for Paramount.
Excellent choice! I’m so happy. But isn’t that a photo of Alicia Keys?
That is Paula
Racism alert.
Racism because LL thinks she looks like someone else? OMG, nooooo, racism alert!
‘Tis called a joke, Gugu Subaru.
LMAO are you kidding?
The thing about a reboot is that each sequel has essentially already been a reboot. The only common element besides Cruise is Ving Rhames. The stories all seem to take place in different universes.
I’m dying to know what they’re going to call it, though. Because “Mission: Impossible” is the brand. You take that away, you take away Paramount’s reason for wanting to do it. But if you go with something like, say, “Mission: Impossible: Reloaded” you get into silly territory pretty quickly.
bad choice. she’s such a lightweight acting wise. but very pretty
I disagree. I thought Paula was very good in Precious.
weakest link. the “write it” speech made me cringe.
BAD CHOICE.
not a problem. she won’t be doing any acting in this movie anyway.
To LL: I, too, thought that photo was one of Alicia Keys but it’s definitely Paula Patton. She’s stunning and whether she can act or not is irrelevant to this film. It will do so well internationally no one will care about its take in the U.S.
Kreuk was my choice. I won’t care to see this anymore.
great news. well deserved.
That picture alone makes me want to see MI4.
I like her and Renner. I might go see this. Paula is beautiful. Another light skinned beauty as they used to call Lena Horne. And then as now, those were the only black women that could get work in the movies.
“another light skinned beauty”…. If she was a dark skinned beauty she wouldn’t have got the part.
I’ve noticed the light-skinned-black-female-preference as well. I guess the American entertainment industry won’t be getting past that one any time soon.
Interesting how British t.v. and films use black actresses of more varying hues. Maybe their color issues aren’t as significant as those in the US.
OK so I’m not the only one that knows Hollywood is stuck in that “Brown Paper Bag” syndrome. THats because white men run this business and have been and still programmed to see dark skin as threatening and light skin as non threatening except if your male.
They always want the dark skin bruting black man but you’ll never see him opposite a beautiful dark brown black woman because thats just too many black faces starring on screen. Yea I know someone on this thread is real uncomfortable right now hearing that but its the TRUTH coming from a black person who works in Hollywood.
I see alot of people on here distorting the definition of Racism. You all are clueless. If you were flies on the walls in production offices you would be floored at how they view african americans! Pure ignorance!!
So how do you explain all of the BLACK rappers and hip hop “artists” who have creative control over their god-awful, misogynistic videos, yet THEY primarily use light-skinned long-haired black women as the love interest in THOSE as well? Don’t talk about your neighbor’s dirty laundry until you take a look at the stains on your own drawers.
Awesome choice. She’s going to be a big star.
I know Cruise is surrounding himself with young people in order to become hip by association but he really ought to surround himself instead with quality older actors (as he did in the first M.I.) otherwise he’s going to look like everyone’s embarrassing father.
It’s not like there’s a shortage of good actors and actresses his own age either. Give me Famke Janssen over Paula Patton any day.
Actually, I’ve been far more surprised that they’re casting actors who are a bit older than what was originally considered. Jeremy Renner is already in his 40s and looks just as old as Cruise does at this point. Patton is in her mid-30s and is starting to reach that point where most black actress begin to be overlooked. How many black actress over the age of 35 are landing plum roles in Hollywood. The fact they both beat out younger actors like Chris Pine and Kristin Kreuk is a pleasant surprise. For once they might actually be choosing actors based on talent instead of youth.
what the hell is wrong with choosing younger actor like Kreuk?
Acting ability aside, it’s often chemistry between actors that wins the day. Could be that Kreuk and Cruise’s chemistry just didn’t translate well on film. I hope the writing and storyline are good. Too many great actors have been in films that even their excellent acting skills couldn’t save.
Patton’s was fortunate enough to appear in the big hit Precious. She added value right now, and MI4 needs to trade off, especially if Tom’s career is dipping. And…. Black actresses are all too often overlooked irrespective of age.
Famke is an amazing actress and definitely would’ve added to the film, but I think she looks too similar to Michelle Monoghan who was in MI: 3.
Paula is an awesome choice though and I think she will do great in this role. (And this has nothing to do with me having a crush on her since HITCH. Ok, maybe it does.)
btw Famke lover – Paula is nine years older than Cruise’s wife… she’s no kid. She just happens to still look good pushing forty. Get your facts straight.
paula is 35. it’s not like she’s in her 20s
i was really rooting for Kreuk
Patton was a bit inconsistent in Precious but I think she has potential. Kreuk? I don’t know…might as well try Minka Kelly and Blake Lively…
This sucks,people want kreuk!
True! i saw more good responses to kristin than paula patton.
Smallville fans?
Awesome choice out of all the actresses, the other 2 didn’t cut it me.
So what are they going to call it?
Mission: Damn Difficult
Mission: Really Really Impossible
Mission: Impossibler
Mission: Imp Posse Bull
I hate they r not calling it mission impossible 4 I hope that doesn’t mean the theme goes away to or it just becomes just another action movie
Kreuk was the best choice for this (
did you see paula patton in that dress before going to a basketball game in Just Wright? Hooot!
Typical PC hollywood casting. She’s a terrible actor. German is the only one who tested who deserved to get the role based on actual acting ability.
Are you fucking kidding me? No talent white actresses get 99.4 percent of all the roles in movies and when one black woman (who looks more white than black) gets a role, you call it PC? Get the fuck outta here.
i think she gets stronger with every role. hopefully she’ll do the same for this.
honestly, i’m surprised he’s doing another action movie after Knight and Day but since Hollywood has given up on original material for now, i guess we should expect to be seeing Jerry Maguire 2 sometime soon.
Great choice!!!
Great choice!
nooooo
kristin kreuk was my chois..
