EXCLUSIVE: Paula Patton has landed that female lead role that Deadline told you she was testing for, alongside actresses Lauren German and Kristen Kreuk. I’m told that Patton will play a young operative who works with Tom Cruise’s Ethan Hunt character. The film will not be called Mission: Impossible 4. Cruise and JJ Abrams, who hatched the project together, always envisioned it as a franchise reboot. The film begins production in the fall with Brad Bird directing Cruise, who’ll co-star with The Hurt Locker‘s Jeremy Renner in what was another hotly contested role. Paramount co-finances the $140 million film with David Ellison’s Skydance banner. It marks the first film for Cruise and Paramount since he left the studio after generating over $3 billion in worldwide grosses for Paramount.

Seriously, I don’t get the Alicia Keys look-alike comments. Just because they are both light-skinned? Alicia has chipmunk cheeks, a bit of an overbite and fuller lips. Don’t get me wrong, despite those comments I think Alicia is gorgeous. I just don’t think she and Paula are indistinguishable.

I’m sorry but why do people love Kristen Kreuk all of the sudden? Despite being really hot what has she done to make people think she’d be great for this role. The only thing I’ve ever seen her in is Smallville and she didn’t exactly blow me away with her acting. Am I missing something here with her?

I saw Kristin Kreuk in a Canadian film called “Partition”, about a muslim woman and seik man who fall in love, set in the Kasmir region between Pakistan and India. She really shined in that film. It got no play here in the US so I’m not surprised no one has heard of it. She actually has considerable acting talent, but she really hasn’t gotten many opportunities to demonstrate that. Kreuk fans know she can elevate bad material (don’t get me started on LOCL-not her fault!), and showcase good material. I know I will go see a film just because she is in it.
But, I wish Paula and everybody on the IMF team good luck, and I hope this film turns out great!

I agree Eric, I don’t get why suddenly Kristen Kreuk is being robbed. She’s been off Smallville for a while and who has really been looking for her since? I’ve met her and trust me, talking to her was like trying to get blood from a stone. I can’t imagine her on the big screen being much more entertaining. With that said I do feel that Paula Patton is overrated, but given that this is a Mission Impossible movie, the most she’ll probably have to do is put herself in jeopardy and stand still looking pretty while her hair blows in the wind until Tom Cruise can save her like he did Thandie Newton in MI:2.

Man some of you are overthinking this. I said Patton was a lock last week because she and Robin Thicke used to be repped by Overbrook and Will is really tight with Cruise. This move has Will, Lassiter and Stovitz’s imprints all over it even if they will deny it publically.
Patton’s following the Thandie Newton, sexual black ingenue that is being used as eye candy in a Cruise movie. No one is casting her for her “acting.”
Yep. Thandie Newton is mixed race like Patton and she had pretty good chemistry with Cruise in MI2. Pretty hot actually. For sure they’re hoping to replicate things with Patton.
Patton’s also appeared in more successful high profile productions compared to the other two. Judging by her photos she’s also seems willing to strip and show her assets for her art.

It seems Kreuk auditioned quite late in the process and Paula was already their first choice/favorite. Paula was successful for reasons already stated (e.g. her resume, thandie newton similarity…).
I’ve yet to see Patton’s acting but it does seem like some actresses are cast based on what they look like and how much flesh they’re prepared to show over their actual acting talent. I could name so many right now…. .
