Ralph Vicinanza, the longtime literary agent of Stephen King and a stalwart representative of prominent science fiction authors, has passed away at the age of 60 from a brain aneurysm. “In the science fiction community, Ralph was one of the preeminent agents, and over the course of his career represented everyone from Philip K. Dick to Robert Heinlein, Isaac Asimov and Peter Straub,” said Vince Gerardis, who partnered with Vicinanza in the production company Created By. While Vicinanza helped his authors get movie deals for many years, he and Gerardis formed Created By to set up scifi projects for his authors. Among the company’s credits are Jumper (based on the Steve Gould novel), the TV series Flash Forward (based on the Robert Sawyer novel) and the upcoming HBO series adaptation of the George RR Martin fantasy series Game of Thrones. “He was a great partner, mentor and friend,” Gerardis said. Vicinanza’s New York office will continue and there will be a memorial service Friday in Yonkers.

He was the most generous man you ever met. Bless his soul.
Sympathy to his friends and family for their loss. god needed his talent and smarts.
He was the warmest human being i have ever come accross..may he rest in peace…God Bless You Ralph……..John
Ralph was my foreign agent for many years. We parted company when I moved to a US agency with another foreign rep, but he was one of the finest men and best agents I ever knew. I have always regretted not being with him when he expanded to full representation. Sad indeed. He has left us too soon.
Sounds like the world of book publishing loss a gem of a man. What a sudden way to go – and so young, just 60.
Rest In Peace, Mr. Vicinanza.
God Bless You Ralph. You were a mensch. And you made me laugh until I cried. The publishing industry just lost a Big One folks. He had a great client list. He did cool stuff with the films and tv. Very innovative. Yeah, he repped Stephen King and Peter Straub – two monster writers. But he repped a lot of great writers. He had an eye. Very few clients ever left him. And – as I said – if I was at a cocktail reception and saw Ralph…I went to him because I always knew he would have me in stiches. I laughed my head off with him. Oh, what joy! Good bye Ralph. A lot of us loved you.
I can’t believe it. Ralph had the mind of a scholar and the soul of a saint. What a loss to the whole world.
Ralph was a great agent, and a great friend. I will miss him for the rest of my life.
My deepest condolences to Ralph’s family, friends, coworkers and clients.
Believe it or not, even the people like me who sit on the opposite side of the negotiating table are mourning Ralph’s passing. He was a very smart, energetic agent who fought well and hard for his clients, but was always professional, cooperative and understanding. He always had a valid rationale for what he wanted for his clients, but was equally willing to listen to our concerns. He truly understood the “art of the deal” and the real meanings of “negotiation” and “compromise”. We’ll miss working with him.
I regret that I never had the chance to meet him in person. We lost something special in our business when we moved from conducting meetings and negotiations face-to-face to doing it all electronically. (It’s somewhat ironic that I have to electronically express my sorrow now that Ralph is gone.)
He was one of a kind. And very kind. My wife and I spent only one day a year with him, and they were always good days. We will miss him.
Godspeed, Ralph.
