Gleemania continues as the Fox music dramedy returned strong for Season 2. But no Tuesday series really impressed. Fox’s new comedy Raising Hope (3.1/8 in adults 18-49, 7.5 million) did the best, followed by fellow Fox half-hour Running Wilde (2.5/7, 5.9 million) and ABC’s cop drama Detroit 1-8-7 (2.4/7, 9.8 million). Here is a rundown network by network.
Thank gawd for Glee. After the disastrous premiere of Lone Star on Monday, the network got some much needed good news this morning as Glee drew a 5.5/16 among 18-49 and 12.3 million viewers overall in its return for Season 2. That was up 57% from last year’s fall premiere before the official start of the season. It is the series’ 2nd-highest episode ever, off .1 from the spring debut. Glee was by far the highest-rated program of the night in the 18-49 demo. But for Fox, which has been looking to successfully launch a live-action comedy series, the news was not as good at 9 PM with the premiere of its 2 new comedies.
Greg Garcia’s Raising Hope opened with a 3.1/8 at 9 PM. That was the highest-rated premiere for a live-action comedy on Fox since Back to You in the fall of 2007, but it doesn’t mean much as the network has only premiered 2 live-action comedies since: Brothers, which ran on the low-rated Friday night, and Sons of Tucson, which fizzled this past midseason. Raising Hope was able to hold on to just a little over 50% of the 18-49 viewers who watched the second half-hour of Glee. The Will Arnett/Mitch Hurwitz comedy Running Wilde (2.5/7) slipped even further at 9:30 PM. Still, on the strength of Glee, Fox won the second night of the season in 18-49 after finishing fourth on Monday.
Glee seriously impacted the incumbents in the 8 PM time hour. The 10th cycle of The Biggest Loser opened with a 2.9/8 in 18-49 and 7.2 million viewers overall for the 2-hour premiere. That was down 24% from the reality series’ debut last fall, which was a week earlier, and the franchise’s lowest season premiere ever. Versus the same week last season, it was down 6%. Loser, which faced Glee in its first hour, did show an impressive hour-to-hour gain though – 46%. At 10 PM, Parenthood (2.4/7) was down 11% from last week’s season premiere.
Like The Biggest Loser, veteran NCIS (3.9/11) also was hurt by Glee, down 19% from last season’s premiere. The two back-to-back episodes of NCIS: Los Angeles averaged 3.4/9 and 3.0/8, down from the 4.4 rating the show’s one-hour series premiere drew last fall. Both series were up from their May finales and combined forces to deliver a nightly win for CBS in total viewers (16.1 million)
The network split its 2-hour Dancing with the Stars results show into two one-hours. The first hour averaged a 2.6/7, while the second, which featured the elimination of David Hasselhoff, won the 9 PM hour with a 4.3/11. The combined two-hour average was a 3.4/9, down 3% from Dancing‘s second night premiere last fall. At 10 PM, ABC premiered its first new show this season, cop drama Detroit 1-8-7, which had recently emerged as one of the network’s stronger bets. Well, it had a so-so debut with a 2.4/7, good for second place in the hour (tied with Parenthood) and down 8% from the premiere of long-forgotten new ABC drama The Forgotten, which debuted in the slot a year ago.

Raising Hope was a disaster – don’t see how it sticks. Not a single laugh or mildly amusing part. That’s really the best these highly paid/highly named showrunners/execs can do? And it’ll slaughter Running Wilde too if it stays as the lead-in. Wilde had a few amusing parts, but it’s tough to have an idiot as the lead character – sooner or later everyone gets tired of the schtick and wants them to grow the fuck up. They work better as side characters, bouncing off a main character’s relatable everyman. Kind of like, you know, Arrested Development. Gob as the lead character doesn’t really work. Fox is really grasping at straws.
At least I chuckled a few times at Raising Hope. The real loser was Running Wilde. It was awful from beginning to end and I say this as a huge fan of Keri Russell and love Will Arnett and David Cross as well. The plot was completely implausible, Russell’s character’s motivations and actions made no sense, the daughter was obnoxious and transparent, and all the talk of the “jungle” was really grating. I’m not sure if I laughed once. I want so much better for everyone involved with the show.
Just remember when you’re praising Will Arnett, Jim Vallely and Mitch Hurwitz, this is a television show they all “wanted” to do. Sony was smart to pass on this turd.
Did I even mention two of those names? Pretty sure I did not.
Are you kidding me? Raising Hope was hands down one of the funniest shows I have ever seen. “Not a single laugh,” you say? More like “Not a dull moment.” I found the writing to be clever, witty and often times so funny I had to pause the DVR until I stopped laughing. (My friends and family felt the same way, so I know I’m not alone on this.) Maybe it’s not for the reality t.v. addicts who think it’s fun to watch morons bash each other on camera, but anyone with a good sense of humor will think this show is a huge breath of fresh air to a previously stale television season.
GLEE was my first choice to watch even though I flipped through channels a bit during commercials but I always came back to GLEE for my #1 favorite actress, Jane Lynch. She is extraordinary! After GLEE I went to HBO & SHOWTIME and ended up watching WEEDS and a fantastic new show in its 2nd season, The Big C”! Laura Linney commands the screen..her acting is perfection. Her co stars, her neighbor, her brother, her student, son and hubby excel. The writing rocks. Laura’s “waxing” scene had me in tears laughing. She is the best of the best. After seeing her in the riveting David Gayle story with Kevin Spacey (also extraordinary) it is nice to see her laughing. She can do anything, she is that good.
Hey, Jude. The big C is not in its 2nd season. Its the first and this was only its 4th episode. Pay attention. dude.
Stephen, quit being such a fucking asshole. Jude, whoever he is, made a mistake – that’s all. Does everyone in this town have to be so fucking nasty all the time. damn!
this is why i’m making my money and getting the fuck outta this town full of cynical mofo’s like you.
yall have a nice day, ya hear!
Jude has no idea what he/she is talking about. Both The Big C (which really isn’t that good) and Weeds (just horrible now) are on Showtime so I don’t get the HBO shoutout. And as the poster above me stated the Laura Linney show just started, and is in no way in its second season.
Slight correction for Jude….The Big C was just renewed for its second season, this is its freshman debut. And Gabi Sidibe is wonderful in it as well.
It’s obvious that “Glee” was the strongest show in the 8pm hour last night. I don’t think that “Raising Hope” or “Running Wilde” are strong enough shows to make it. They both have “Glee” to thank for any viewers at all. (including myself) I was personally killing time until “Detroit 187″ debuted on ABC at 10pm. DWTS second hour of results is the most likely culprit for pulling viewers from other networks between 9-10. Although, I can’t believe people still watch that show! How many glitter outfits and awkward dancing moves does America need to see?! “Detroit 187″ is good! Really good. Strong cast, great content. I’m not familiar with Detroit but I believe that this show could do for Motown what SATC did for NYC…minus the glitz and glam.
That’s funny I completely disagree. I thought Raising Hope was refreshingly hysterical and moving. I thought Running Wilde was a total disaster.
I completely agree with you, Anonymous!
I just left the TV off.
Radio is so much better and cooler.
Glee was great, except the attempt at rapping. The Sue/Beiste face off was fantastic, and seeing the brief alliance between Will and Sue was fun too. Jane Lynch is definitely my favorite female comedy actress.
As usual, too many good shows on at 10pm so one has to wait for On Demand viewing. For me, Parenthood lost out to Detroit 187, which I really liked, and Sons of Anarchy. Steven King really had a creepy cameo n Sons as a cleaner who does his own wet work, as opposed to Harvey Keitel’s dapper version from PF.
The demise of FOX this year seems to be casting of it’s leading men. Instead of choosing actors with rang and quirks and talent, they’ve opted for guys who are stiff and wooden and one dimensional. RAISING HOPE’s Lucas Neff was unwatchable. How can you hang a show on this guy and expect it to succeed? Sure the writing isn’t great and it’s cut horribly, but EVEN surrounding him with the great Martha Plimpton, and the best kept secret actress under 30 – Shannon Woodward, Lucas Neff was a 1000mg televisual sedative. Same problemo as LONE STAR’s Jimmy Wolk and frankly GLEE’s Corey Monteith (if you took away the singing). How are these guy’s getting cast?
I have to agree with you on the Raising Hope leading man – nothing there at all. The kid/man who plays Finn is by far the weakest part of Glee.
Disagree on James Wolk on Lone Star. I thought he was tremendous – he came across as charming and was watchable. But it probably doesn’t matter now considering their abysmal numbers.
Watched CBS all night and recorded DWTS.
LOL no mention of The CW?
Looks like the rumors circling the industry are true: The CW will cease to exist by season’s end.
Thank god for people like you Ethan…I left the TV off as well…Why people don’t pick up and book and read anymore is tragic
people are getting dumber and dumber… and TV shows just don’t have the talent that they used to..(on an all around basis)starting from the Networks to Producers to the actual talent…you have great leading men such as ex. John Hamm/Mad Men or Michael C Hall/Dexter and a few others but seriously..the leading man category is seriously lacking in Hollywood and then the networks keep casting the same ole hyped no-talent in pilot after pilot…Sorry Alex Oloughlin…Scott Caan overshadows you in H-5-0.. I can’t even get started here… I do like Modern Family and I think Steve Levitan and his partner took a chance—and it paid off….thanks to the terrific writers… Yes it starts with a great script hence…story…writers… now for the bang…WHO IN HELL…Green-lit “Mike and Molly? so not funny …and gross all around…from Swoozie to the sister…these characters are not relatable and are not good in this series…Chuck Lorre may have had a hit with Big Bang… and Two..Men but CBS …seriously! The two over sized leads are …gosh I can’t even say! Happy fall TV- 2010!
Dude, get the hell off a website dedicated to TV and Movies.
Love Glee and Jane, but my new favorite actress for this season is Martha Plimpton on Raising Hope. She was incredible – funny and tender. A really hard role and she was erfect.
NCIS (18.9 million is no small potatoes. Both NCIS and NCIS Los Angeles is very popular with both segments of population. You can bet both these shows will rise as the season gets going. They have a very loyal audience. Well written and so much better then the fluff of GLEE and other shows that are high school
FOX has a great strong Tuesday night block now. It is so exciting and refreshing. GLEE was awesome, RAISING HOPE was ok and RUNNING WILDE is inspired genius. I had such low expectations as everyone keeps comparing to Arrested Development but it is and I feel will grow into amazing tv. HOPE was really funny but not sure where it goes in abusingly raising a child. GLEE was pure enjoyment. KUDOS FOX as I believe your Tuesday night block won the night. That is an accomplishment and should be revelled instead of shit on
BELIEVE – do you work for Fox?
I had high hopes for Wilde, but it was completely awful and I couldn’t even finish watching it. An utter mess, and not funny at all. Love Keri Russell and Arnett, but it just didn’t work. Give us the Arrested Development movie already!
Well, I disagree with some posters. I thought Raising Hope was the best new show to debut. It was really funny. (When it showed at the Paley Center, it was the only show all week to elicit cheers.)
I love the lead of RH. I agree with you about Corey Monteith (blech).
I look forward to Raising Hope lasting awhile.
But I also agree, Gob as the lead doesn’t work. Sorry Mitchell Hurwitz and Jim Vallely. Much as I loved Arrested Development passionately, Running Wilde is no AD.
But at least everyone isn’t focused on Keri Russell’s hair. So there’s that…
Raising Hope was great.Wow there are so many bitter writers and actors commenting on here…it’s really sad.
Just a bitter viewer here. I’m not a four year old, I want programming that doesn’t speak to me as if I am.
I have spent a sum total of 5 days in Hollywood in my life and have never worked as a writer or an actor but even I know that Raising Hope sucked. It was completely unfunny. I said yesterday that Rules of Engagement was the least funny show on television, then I watched Raising Hope and Running Wilde. Rules of Engagement is now third. Running Wilde was horrible, and Raising Hope was little better.
Have to agree–what is with all the vitriol? My God. Shows aren’t perfect right out of the box, as much as we might want them to be. If they are utter messes by episode 6, then let’s talk. PS I think Big C rocks. Best new show this season.
I opted to watch some classic season 6 episodes of MARY TYLER MOORE. Now that’s good TV.
I’m tired of NCIS:LA, as far as cities go Detroit is so much more interesting. Really excited to see where 187 goes this season. The pilot was awesome.
Hey Nellie,
First, let me say how much I’ve enjoyed your TV coverage. You add so much to the site, and this is coming from someone that doesn’t usually read TV news.
Second, I had to ask, not that it changes your point or general story, but hasn’t Fox premeried at least three live action comedies since 2007′s Back to You? I have to stand up for The Good Guys. Perhaps it’s just out of an undying love for Bradley Whitford (who I think is doing great work with average material) but I hope this comment gets posted if nothing else than to bring an iota of attention to the show. I’m surprised Fox wasn’t able to make at least Running Wilde numbers with it. Funny premise and great cast.
Thanks!
What are you talking about. Will Arnett is hilarious in Running Wilde and Keri is adorable. It is already so much better than the “comedy”on TV like 30 Rock and Modern Family which btw is a total rip off of Arrested Development.RW is quirky & fresh.
I hope they let it fond an audience
Watched the original Detroit 187 pilot back before they took out the documentary element and loved it. Saw the re-edited version last night and loved it even more. Really hope this one sticks around. Imperioli is awesome!
A) i hope the rumors are true. We don’t need five networks. Hopefully the industry will return to more localism and independent station with the demise of the cw. If it must survive, it should become a programming service like mynetworktv or operate as a cable network since their demo target is ridiculous for a broadcast network.
B) I can’t wait for A1849 to be as universally irrelevant as I have contended for several years now. It’s funny how “ncis” can be considered struggling because its 18 million viewers don’t measure a 4 rating in an antiquated measuring system.
Glee had a fantastic episode. Very funny, great songs. I love Sunshine/ Charice. If she does not become a star, it’s a sin. She was os engaging and that voice!
Lone Star was good. I hope it does not get cancelled, I liked it.
Halfway through Boardwalk Empire, not yet impressed but will keep watching ar least 3 episodes.
Mad Men is brilliance, love it. The whole cast is simply divine.
Although, I like the recent years of light dramas, it was really nice to see good serious dramatic writing (sans glib jokes) back on network TV again with Detroit 187.
However, the last couple years, networks have shown they can’t handle it (e.g. Southland moving to TNT).
Hopefully, the show can build on it’s opener and that ABC will give the show some time (like House was given) to get the word out on how great the show is–Didn’t quite understand the Detroit protests, because I thought the variety of well developed characters were shown in a positive light (you know, aside from the spree killer, of course).
I’m looking forward to more Detroit 187 episodes along with The Good Wife next Tuesday.
