The season premieres of CW’s Monday dramas 90210 (2.0 million viewers, 1.2/4 in 18-34) and Gossip Girl (1.9 million, 1.3/4 in 18-34) were down double-digits from last year. It total viewers, 90210, which aired Tuesdays at 8PM last season, was off 19%, while the heavily hyped Paris opener of Gossip Girl was down 27%. On a more positive note, this was 90210′s highest-rated episode in total viewers and 18-34 since December 2009, and Gossip Girl was almost flat with its May finale.
ABC’s season finale of Bachelor Pad (1.8/5) was down 10% from last week, hitting series low. The finale of the network’s Dating In the Dark (1.3/4) was up 8%. Also hitting summer low was Fox’s drama Lie to Me (1.5/4) at 9 PM. CBS’s The Big Bang Theory is leaving Mondays in style. In its last foray on the night before relocating to Thursdays next week, a rerun of the hit comedy (2.4 rating/6 share in adults 18-49) was the highest-rated program on any network, followed by its lead-in, Two and a Half Men (2.3/6, also a repeat). With all-reruns, CBS won the night in 18-49 (2.0/5) and total viewers (6.8 million).
Given how strong football has been on NBC so far, it is interesting to see how Monday Night Football did on ESPN last night. I will update when the cable network releases ratings.

Not sure why they make these shows anymore. Saved by the Bell did double that in ratings 10 years ago. Moesha did double that. These shows are failures at those #’s.
Double those numbers, TEN YEARS AGO. Apples and oranges. Also, different network. Your comparisons are terribly flawed.
Anybody have any idea what the viewership was for 90201 and GG on alt platforms – Hulu? Itunes? Etc. Anybody tracking those numbers accurately?
Too bad..I love 90210 and watch it faithfully.
Dead shows walking. Youth have short attention spans and they abandoned Gossip Girl a long time ago. Now even the diehards can’t even be bothered to watch its season’s premiere. Considering CW shows drop ratings from their premieres, it’s going to get real ugly from here on out with GG and 90210.
I disagree. If 90210 returns for a fourth season, freshman year at CU will give it a jolt creatively. No one does the college years like 90210. Dawson’s Creek, Gossip Girl and the OC all kind just phoned in the college experience.
90210 will pull all stops cause the whole crew goes to the same college, GO CONDORS! (Yeah, it was Condors fact check that next time you have a Bear when Naomi visits CU). Liam like Dylan will probably end up at community college the first semester and Annie will go to New York to act for a couple episodes then come back and enroll.
There’s so much on the college scene to tap for a new gen. Naomi vies for control of Kelly’s old sorority. Will openly Gay Teddy get into my old fraternity Kappa Epsilon Delta? Silver could go all activist and get arrested. The girls get a beach house. Someone has a wacky RA they get involved with. Someone has a roommate who’s all out going then he goes home and kills himself at Thanksgiving break and everyone’s like, what happened? He was always so happy.
I’ll say it again, no one does college like 90210.
How low can ratings go?
Hey
Well I believe that you have to judge by the %. So say OC was cancelled when Fox noticed that in season 4 the decline of season 3 ontinued and got as bad as 48%, an average of 45%, that’s like 50% and a clear cut.
Now if we take gossip girl and consider it. They noticed that the show is obviousy failing, not to mention that the premiere was said to be “psyched”, well it “sucked” instead. I am not judging it subjectively but judging by the ratings…. So I assume that if by mid season things won’t turn out better and the ratings stay at 1.7-1.9 or get lower, which I think they will sometimes since we have shows like Smallville that start and Supernatural, the show will either be cancelled after this or the next season . next probably being shorter like 12 episodes.
I don’t think it is yet possible to see the ratings for online viewership. I DO believe that iTunes and so on have ratings, but since you can get all th episodes online for free and judging by the crappy storylines written – I doubt people woudl bother bying them.
Finally, Gossip Girl is an industrial show that is involved in both fashion and music industry, and even books, but at some point – and I think that point is closing up upon the studio – the show will only harm the demand for these extras: people get disappointed with the show, they won’t watch episodes, buy music or clothes commercioning it, the books are a special case since they are the original story, but I doubt there will be a rise in consumtion there either.
Basically, Gossip Girl is ruined, and the decline has been going on since season 2 if I am to be bold. And I think it’s quite clear WHY! All the original writers except for the 4 that are creators (Josh, Steph, Joshua, Robb) are gone, even the writes from second season have left the show – and now the writers crew is filled up with newbees who have no connection to the characters and no loyalty to the fan base. The degrading and totally illogical plots and monologues were either humiliating to watch or just ridiculous or BOTH! The things that were strictly forbidden like a TABOO in first 2 years suddenly were no biggy. And the TRUE taboos like sleeping with a married man, or with you STEP SISTER while blaming your supposedly true love for your renting her out like a wh*re to an uncle, whom you just saved your stepmom from last year – the RAPIST uncle – things like that was all fine.
90210 has developed into the better show out of the two. When it started it was all over the place. But as season 1 came to a close and throughout season 2, the characters started to gel. And the writers played up each actor’s strengths. The 3rd season premiere was very good. It would be a shame if The CW pulled the plug on it now.
I allow myself one trashy teen show at any give time. After the OC’s demise, I was digging Gossip Girl mainly because of the talents of Chuck and Blair but have since grown loyal to the new 90210.
Here’s the prob… I’m a broke twentysomething who doesn’t have cable so I watch all my shows through the internet. 90210 has gotten great. I jones bad for it. itunes season pass is too expensive and cwtv.com doesn’t air the show til days later. So I go watch it on a bootleg site, like I’m doing now.
I feel bad, like I’m letting Dawn and Rebecca Sinclair down. Why don’t they just have it streaming on the site at the same time it airs? This is 2010, not 1864.
