EXCLUSIVE: George Clooney is close to finding his star for Farragut North. I’m told he’s negotiating with Ryan Gosling to play the lead role of a young communications director who works for a fast rising presidential candidate. During the course of the campaign, the idealistic young man falls prey to the backstabbing and other dirty trickery of more seasoned rivals.
Gosling is in line to play a role once eyed by Leonardo DiCaprio when the Beau Willimon play was optioned by Warner Bros two years ago. Clooney already was eyeing it as a directing vehicle back then. Willimon worked for Howard Dean’s 2004 presidential run, and his own experiences informed the play. Right now, Clooney and his Smokehouse Productions banner partner Grant Heslov are running point on the project. They aren’t saying where the money is coming from or who’ll distribute, but they are confident they will begin production in March.
Gosling is expected to be a factor in the Best Actor race, by merit of his performance opposite Michelle Williams in Blue Valentine, the drama that will be distributed by The Weinstein Company.

BLUE VALENTINE rocks – the performances are amazing – both are Oscar worthy, as well as the film itself!!!
michelle is great. ryan speaks in an annoying brooklyn accent (exactly like the writer director’s) when the character is supposed to have just moved from florida.
Chris Pine and Chris Noth did exceptional jobs in the play version…. why not tape them for the roles?
it will kill me if Gosling isn’t nominated for his work in BLUE VALENTINE. C’mon Weinsteins, get cracking – release a damn trailer already!
RYAN GOSLING is also starring/just began shooting a cool indie action/thriller called DRIVE, co-starring AN EDUCATION’S CAREY MULLIGAN, BREAKING BAD’s BRYAN CRANSTON, ALBERT BROOKS, and MAD MEN’s CHRISTINA HENDRICKS, etc.
Stunt driver by day moonlights as getaway driver by night.
Solid cast looks to elevate this above the usual action genre fare.
It’s also the first film co-produced & co-financed by Bold Films and OddLot.
Coming soon to a theater near you…
I like Ryan Gosling,
but Chris Pine gave a wonderful live performance of this play in L.A.
he is so hot. i have nothing constructive to say.
Too bad he couldn’t have chosen Chris Pine who was excellent at the Geffen performance.
Chris Pine did an amazing job with this same role in the Geffen Playhouse production. Guess he’s too busy for the film?
Ryan Gosling has been the best actor of his generation just waiting to happen for years. How amazing to always be at the top of your game regardless if your choices are commercial or not. He’s very special.
All these Chris Pine lovers obviously haven’t seen “Blue Valentine”. Gosling could very well be the best actor working today this side of Daniel Day Lewis.
I agree with the other commenters. Chris Pine was excellent in the Geffen performance. I love Ryan Gosling, but he can’t pull off cocky well enough for us to believe he’ll be destroyed by his own hubris.
Clooney and Gosling both have perpetual stoned smug face.
Farragut Norzzzzzzzz…..
As much as I like Gosling, I must echo the sentiment of Jennifer Davis, sp and Donnelly – Chris Pine was terrific in this play at the Geffen and should be the one to bring it to the screen.
Watch out for Gosling to really become a big star next year when Crazy, Stupid Love hits theaters…
Yeah, the problem with FN is that the character is such a jerk, it’s got to be someone who can play “jerk” without you hating him.
Chris Pine, FTW.
I’d rather see Chris Pine as Stephen Myers, he was wonderful in the play. Gosling is a good actor but he’s overrated.
John Gallagher Jr. played the role in NYC before Chris Pine. In fact Pine replaced Gallagher Jr., yet no one is crying for him to get the role. I’m sure Chris Pine was great in the role but he doesn’t OWN it. People played it BEFORE him and will continue to play it after him. Gosling is a very good actor and has just as much a chance to succeed in the role as Pine. If you don’t believe that, then fine…but gues what, doesn’t matter because Pine isn’t getting the part.
Ryan Gosling is a far better actor than Pine. Let’s see Chris Pine pull off as diverse roles as The Believer, Half Nelson and Lars and the Real Girl.
Plus, with the kind of cast Clooney was setting up, Pine would’ve been kind of out of his league.
Mr Clooney should take a look at the script >>> SECRETS OF THE THIRD THEORY <<< if he is really interested in producing the next big international movie.
