The 36th season premiere of Saturday Night Live last night averaged a 5.6 household rating/13 share in the metered markets, up 15% from last year’s season opener. The debut was also higher than the opening episode in September 2007 but couldn’t match the fall 2008 premiere (7.4/18) boosted by the interest in the presidential campaign and a skit featuring Tina Fey as Sarah Palin. Then-SNL regular Amy Poehler, who played Hillary Clinton in that famous skit, hosted the show last night with Katy Perry as musical guest. Here are videos of Poehler’s cameo-filled monologue featuring Fey, Justin Timberlake, Jimmy Fallon and Rachel Dratch as well as her Really?!? Weekend Update segment with Seth Meyers.

Watched the show, hoping for a good one. But other than Katy Perry’s performances, the show was very lame. No real deal funny material. The pubic hair hair grafts was kind of funny, but not as good as other commercial parodies. The new cast members were not really noticed or needed. Too bad Tina Fey and Fallon had only very brief cameos. All in all, just another unfunny & boring show except for Perry.
It’s odd how this show is just so consistently terrible. The percentage of sketches that fall absolutely flat, it’s inexcusable. They hire kids out of Harvard who worked at the Lampoon like all the others before them, and 90% of those people have no talent. Some are charming, brilliant and charismatic, but don’t have talent.
This Jay Pharoah kid, he’s going to be one of the most famous people in America, but it’s like pulling teeth for SNL to actually hire someone like him. They go to 2nd City improv kids who can improv, but not write a sketch to save their lives. Writers on that show are not as responsible as the cast members.
Something is really wrong with SNL when they miss HUGE opportunities like Donald Glover. He was an obvious talent since 2006 with his Derrick Comedy stuff and SNL ignored him. I hope NBC pushes him to host pretty soon, the guy is amazingly talented.
Most of the best sketches I see are from young comics putting their stuff up on youtube. SNL needs to jump into the 21st century and take a flier on a few of these guys.
“Really With Seth and Amy” has never been funny. Ever.
Really!?
I understand that NBC is still getting money from this ad infested shitfest, but still…if somebody had a clue, they would trash and then rehab it as the rebirth of the thirty minute That Was the Week That Was. The rest of the time they could fill up with reruns of Law and Order.
This show use to have writers who wrote for “National Lammpoon”, they had guest hosts like George Carlin and Richard Pryor. Musical guests like the “Rolling Stones” and “Meatloaf”, and ofcource the “Not ready for primetime players” were brilliant talents. I know it’s been 36 years and times have changed and cast members have come and gone, but what happened to this show that use to be the gold standard of comedy. It use to take risks, now you can see the punchlines coming a mile away.
Like every other baby boomer institution, it went the safe route years ago. If someone were smart, they would start a new weekly satirical show with a fresh Point of View
Fox did and it failed. SNL’s ratings are very good for a Sat. night at that time.
I had posted that the shitfest should be cancelled and rehabilitated as the thirty minute That Was the Week That Was,and that the rest of the time could be filled up with reruns of Law and Order.
I will always set the DVR so I can check out SNL, but jesus, with so much going on in the world and months to put a show together it just seemed uninspired.
Ugh. If these two segments are any indication of what I missed last night, I am glad I missed it.
According to latest Rolling Stone, what makes. Lorne Michaels laugh gets made. So there ya go.
I’m sad she didn’t bring Hillary back =( She made such a good Hillary Clinton.
Wow! I was so psyched for the episode. Then so disappointed. It was way to sexual; sexual jokes can be funny when you’re on top of it (pun intended) but these jokes were so sophmoric and predictable. And once they get on a crude joke (farting, masturbation, etc), it seems they can never get off (that’s what she said!) And it got way too awkward. True humor makes me laugh; not cringe. As a high school student, my goal in life is to work on SNL. Thanks for setting low standards with this episode-now I have a good chance.
Very flat premiere last night. SNL is a dying show getting ready to go on life support. No diversity in casting. No asian, black, hispanic comedic actors/stand-up’s with the exception of Keenan.
Where oh where has my great SNL gone????
They added Jay Pharoah this year who is black and have had an Indian cast member since last year. How about actually watching the show before commenting?
What Indian cast member? Nasim Pedrad or whatever? No, she just makes fun of Indians on the show. That seems to be NBC’s bread and butter. Making fun of new immigrant groups that don’t have the political clout yet.
Nasim Pedrad is Iranian, not Indian.
Finally SNL got back to its roots with the Gay Marriage at the 9/11 Mosque skit – finally, back to real political satire that prob wasn’t quite ready for prime time. Finally.
Did anyone notice how SNL couldn’t think of one good thing to say about Jeff Zucker? In the news segment they pretended to address his departure but immediately diverted to Paterson in a gag.
The guy was there for 24 years and they can’t say one good thing about him – that says it all, doesn’t it?
Sorry, but nobody thinks Zucker was any good. So why lie to a national audience regarding his departure (i.e. firing)?
There are plenty of other opportunities to “praise the dead” – for instance, an interview/montage on the Today Show or the NBC Nightly News.
Better yet, competitor ABC News should make Zucker their “Person of the Week” this Friday. After all, his lousy programming decisions and legacy of “failing up” benefited the other networks.
Missed the show, but caught them interviewed on Larry King. Interesting discussion of how the SNL process works and the origin of “Really”.
The new cast members look generic. SNL claims to be liberal but deep down inside, they use the good ol boy system. No Asian or Hispanic, c’mon SNL, mix it up.
This episode made me miss the original Mad TV with Arte Lang and Bobby Lee. Why not let them guest star and see what mayhem ensues?
Arte and Bobby will make it suck even more
Arte’s a mess and Bobby can’t get time off from Hamburger Hamlet.
Apparently SNL is too ‘highbrow’ for some of us, who can think of no better words than ‘shitfest’ to describe what they cannot understandt…
Having Artie Lange host the show, they would have to put the show on a seven- second delay. At least he would join the likes of Richard Pryor and Andrew “Dice” Clay for that honor. Bring on Howard and Robin and the gang in cameos would do wonders for the show.
SNL has always been hit or miss, but to say it was an absolutely dreadful just isn’t true. The pubic hair sketch was funny, the opening was alright, and the gay weddings at the mosque bit was hilarious. While in somewhat bad taste, the Governor David Patterson/New Jersey stuff is funny too.
As for the writer who said Katy Perry was good . . . did you actually listen to her? She was horrid. The girl can’t really sing.
Isn’t there anyone besides SNL alums who can host? Come on!
Get rid of the writers!!! Or…have the watch SCTV DVD’s to see how its done
The monologue was funny. The mosque skit was funny. The pregnant women show was funny. Weekend update was funny. The Expendables sequel skit was funny. Everything else was just terrible. This show is the new Mad TV. I feel sorry for the cast. Most of them are pretty hilarious people.
I watched in hopes of a What Up With That installment. That’s 90 minutes I will never get back. I laughed out loud exactly ONE time, and that was at a fart joke (Whassa matter – jealous?)
Next Saturday I’ll get to bed early and check HULU for WUWT in the morning.
Worst show on tv period! Gets worse every year! I am guessing this will be the last year!!!
