It has scored overwhelmingly positive reviews on Rotten Tomatoes. But David Fincher’s The Social Network still has to prove itself at the box office this weekend. But it is already rocking the music charts. For the past 48 hours, The Social Network Original Score Album has been the top seller on Amazon’s MP3 Store. The disc features original compositions by Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross.

Not to be a downer, but the album is on sale for $2.99 for two days. Thus the selling. If it was $9.99 like the rest I don’t think this post would exist.*
*Although I bought the album and it’s great
Probably because they sold it for $2.99…
It’s worth pointing out that the whole album is currently on sale for $2.99. That, undoubtedly, helps sales, if not profits.
Well, yeah, congrats, but it was only $2.99 for the whole thing.
Congratulations, you’re the fourth person to say this.
Mike,
Wouldn’t it be more accurate to call it the “Aaron Sorkin-written” Social Network?
I’m no fan of Sorkin personally, but he is unquestionably the voice behind this movie.
Or do you think it wrote itself?
This is great. This is a total callback to that scene in ‘Studio 60′ where the perfect ten models get confused about Matt Albie’s job as head writer of the show, and keep asking him when they’ll let him be on the show too.
Aaron should do a double inverse Josh Lemon Lyman/Matt Albie hyper-meta reference to this in his next project. In space. While smoking. Thank God we invented the whatever device…
Aight, I’m calling it now. This film is gonna bust. This is the new Snakes On A Plane…a film being hyped for it’s internet buzz when in reality, Joe and Jane US have no interest in it.
But Snakes on a Plane was a fad movie based on a ridiculous premise that wasn’t catching on beyond the internet base.
The Social Network is a David Fincher movie written by Aaron Sorkin that’s already being cited as the movie to beat at the Oscars this year. The prestige alone should be able to sell it to audiences.
FYI, Snakes was considered a great project until it was made. Everyone loved it and where kissing each other over it. Then reality bit.
Exactly! I know no one who has ANY interest in this film, whatsoever. Who is the targeted demo?
Yes, who is the targeted demo? Could it be people who like good directors and writers and actors? People who like interesting stories about interesting people? People who give a shit about the world around them? A better question might be, “Why are you on an ‘inside’ hollywood film site when you and your friends have no interest in anything that might be the slightest bit challenging?”
Don’t worry, they’re making Transformers 3. There’s still going to be something for you and your buds to see.
Oh please, stop pouting. LOL We all know that a quality film does not equate big sales. This films got about as much appeal as Hurt Locker yet I’ve seen more commercials for this film then I have for summer blockbusters like Inception. The only reason it’s being overhyped is that the studioheads and online sites think there is a cool factor to it because of it’s internet friendly appeal…kinda like how Kick-Ass and Snakes On A Plane were oversold due to the internet factor. Just saying
I think the time could be right for this to hit. Post-”Inception,” audiences are ready for another smart, dark, unconventional mainstream film. It won’t do “Inception” numbers of course, but if “Wall Street” and “The Town” have been hitting the last few weeks, there no reason this can’t.
I believe he answered who the demo was. Didn’t notice anywhere that he said it would make 400 million.
Glad you know how much appeal films have before they come out. And we all know that box office equals great movie, thanks for the “insight.”
LOL, wow, meow!
By targeted demo, I meant, are they targeting females/males, young, old, middle age, kids? Facebook the website skews toward the younger crowd, specifically, students, like myself. But I seem to notice a lack of awareness and/or just plain apathy for this movie among my peers. The trailer we saw for this movie was just not good. Both this trailer and Devil got groans from the audience when I was in the theater last.
As for why I visit this website without wanting to be “challenged” by this movie — that is a very unfair statement, on two fronts. First, just because I don’t have an interest in this specific movie doesn’t mean I don’t like other “challenging” movies. Second, I like this website. I like the way Ms. Finke just lays out her opinions, (e.g. Re Shia in Wallstreet: “Shia is Shia, when is this kid going to show range”) and I like to read about future casting in movies. I don’t think this website is limited just to people “in the know” so I don’t really see what you are getting at (besides trying to be snobbishly insulting).
Excellent soundtrack. It should win an Oscar. Best soundtrack I heard in years if not ever. Thanks for mentioning this story so I could get it at $2.99.
See that, charge an appropriate amount for some mp3 files and look what happens.
Yeah, because artists don’t deserve more than a pittance for their hard work.
Sure, Trent and Atticus made the deal to sell it for $2.99, but it’s easily worth more.
Duh! Every band that is # 1 on Amazon, including Arcade Fire last month, come out on the cheap-o Daily Double. In fact EVERY new record come out w a deep discount
Saw it last weekend and felt the score fit the film’s tone and pacing like a glove. A fresh approach and very well done.
I overheard several people mention it as one of the film’s strengths, along with the writing and acting. Surprisingly, no one commented on the direction – although I thought it was Fincher’s most nuanced work yet.
BTW: the freebie score sampler released a week or so ago probably helped sales of the score as well.
