EXCLUSIVE: It’s easy to forget that Sony Pictures Entertainment’s Amy Pascal had to be talked into making Kevin James’ Paul Blart: Mall Cop by Adam Sandler’s Happy Madison production company which also put Kevin in the summer hit Grown Ups and the upcoming Sony-MGM coproduction star turn The Zookeeper slated for a July 8, 2011 release. Of course now Sony Pictures is doing its best to keep the actor in a choke hold – so the studio just made a deal for an untitled mixed martial arts vehicle for James to shoot next year. The script will be written by Allan Loeb, and Kevin is producing with Todd Garner.
James is attached to play a physics teacher whose school faces drastic cutbacks. In an attempt to save his best friend’s job and the music program his students love, he moonlights in the octagon as a mixed martial arts fighter, ultimately leading to brawling in the UFC. The film is on a fast track, and production presidents Matt Tolmach and Doug Belgrad hope to get it into production next year. Jeff Sussman will be exec producer. James has really proven himself after moving into features following his King of Queens TV sitcoms run. His Hitch and I Now Pronounce You Chuck and Larry were all co-starring hits until he could fly solo. Garner and James produced the Sony/MGM co-production The Zookeeper with Happy Madison’s Sandler and Jack Giarraputo.

seriously kevin James as an MMA fighter, they might as well have him in a track and field movie, as being faster than usain bolt
Any less believable than Adam Sandler as an All-Pro Quarterback in The Longest Yard remake?
Also, have you seen Roy Nelson, who a season of The Ultimate Fighter? Roy wishes he had James physique.
Seriously, have you ever heard of comedy. The Rock in this role would not be too funny.
you grossly underestimate the rock’s acting talent. he’s one of the most underrated comedians. you saw him on snl right?
Yes, because casting a protype MMA fighter in a comdic role where he plays an MMA fighter would be funny… (full sarcasm intended)
This plot worked great for Nacho Libre and really helped boost Jack Black’s career. *snicker*
NACHO LIBRE WAS GREAT
He actually trains MMA in real life. And he’s quite good.
Dude, Kevin James trains mma and has for many years. Do your homework before you bash him… He’s good for the sport!
Beverly Hills Ninja II
Fat AND unfunny! Can’t wait to not watch it.
Seriously, you can just rip off Nacho Libre and everyone’s okay with it?
Nacho Libre was the first thing I thought of, as well.
MMA and pro wrestling are two different things. 2010. Please keep up.
the kevin james ear begins! these guys are smart to capitalize on it!
I’m surprised no one has really capitalized on James’ doofus decency. He was the best part of “Hitch”, the part with real heart. Not sure the MMA film will capture that aspect of his personality, either.
Kevin has been training MMA for the past 10 years and its prob not gonna be anything like beverly hills ninja kevin is not chris farley nor does he try to be. I think its gonna be a fun 4 quad movie just like Mall Cop and the bust through the 100M mark just like mall did!
Similar high concept pieces they were developing for Will Farrell a few years ago. Hope he doesn’t bottom out like the aforementioned Farrell.
I’m not a comedy writer but I think that sounds pretty damn funny. And I agree with the Rock comment above. To me it almost feels like an old Abbot and Costello set up.
This is certainly casting against type, but the same can be said for Seth Rogan in Green Hornet.
We will all have to just wait and see?????????
I like Kevin…..I can see him as the human version of KUNG FU PANDA.
Fun
the Kevin James ear!! More like no ears, check that pic out!!
Seriously, he’s just another empty, pretty face with a cute tushy. Where’s the real talent??
Kevin is funny as hell. Always the stand out in otherwise mediocre films. Sony is smart to keep him happy and in the fold.
My understanding is that Kevin James played football and wrestled in college.
Plus, i see this video on youtube from four years ago…

James may not be believable because of his size and the roles he plays in other movies. However, James has a huge history, interest, and friends in the MMA.
It might work as it’s obviously the comedy treatment of MMA.
If they don’t have a title yet they should call it NACHO LIBRE.
Ever hear of Sammo Hung? He’s a not-exactly-svelte martial artist who used to have his own kung-fu show on CBS, and he was fatter then than he is now. James isn’t going to become some kind of ultimate fighting bad-ass but he could probably train enough to hold his own in the climactic final bout of the movie.
have any of you dorks ever actually watched MMA before?
the most accomplished HW in the sport, is a doughy russian dude.
Damn I should have seen this comin,
KJ has been an MMA groupie for years, back in 2007 he even held the spit bucket for Bas Ruttens last MMA event at the LA forum, he just sat cage side an giggled like a school girl.
I dont believe there has been an MMA event west of the rockies I havent seen him ringside at….it was jus a matter of time i guess
Where’s Joe Rogans cameo? He’s steroid ready
He’s the new Jackie Gleason.

Allan Loeb has great unproduced scripts like “Only Living Boy in New York,” and he’s stuck making the UFC version of Nacho Libre? REALLY?
I hear you Stitzer when you talk about what the writer Loeb has on his plate — and they produce THIS?!! WTF? “Only Living Boy In New York” may be the best thing he’s written.
I also can’t for the life of me figure out Loeb’s career. He writes great flops (“Things we lost in the fire” and “The Switch”……. um, his “21″ was an exception — it did make bank) and somehow he remains Hollywood’s 40-something Boy Wonder. Must be nice to be him, flops and all!
Kevin James is one of the most brilliant physical comedians since –well– Chaplin. Don’t let the plus size fool you skinny, cerebral humorists. . . .
This could be a very funny movie. Kevin can pull it off. Does anyone know if he is training in Martial Arts or MMA right now?
Except for “Hitch”, Kevin James and Sandler make the kind of movies I’d just as soon wait to see when they come on TV. If Kevin follows Sandler’s example, I don’t see him ever become the respected star he deserves to be. I like Adamm too but he’s sort of trapped in a box without a bow on it.
As a former Chicago talent agent and manager, it’s my opinion that Kevin needs to take a career lesson from Tom Hanks. Hanks came out of TV into a string of watchable movies like Joe Versus The Volcano, The Money Pit, Splash, Hooch and Forrest Gump. These were all perfect launch vehicles for him and I could see Kevin James in all of them. Kevin is a naturally funny and lovable personality who could easily capture the hearts of movie-goers just as Hanks did. I’ll bet, like Hanks, he could eventually go deep too. I can already imagine him in “Sleepless In Seattle” and even “The Green Mile”. Angels & Demons – is probably a stretch.
The new JACKIE GLEASON???
You know nothing about tv or talent.
Just stay on surviving big brother or do over a house.
