TBS has opted not to renew quirky comedy My Boys for a 5th season, making the fourth season finale which aired on Sunday in actuality the series finale. The show from Sony TV and creator Betsy Thomas never became a ratings hit but developed a devoted cult following. While the odds of it continuing were considered long, My Boys and its cast were showcased prominently at Turner’s upfront presentation in May, and TBS and TNT’s programming chief Michael Wright stressed back then that he would seriously consider picking up the comedy for another season if it did well in the ratings in Season 4. Unfortunately, it didn’t. The show’s fourth season has averaged 942,000 viewers in live+7, down 19% from season 3. In adults 18-49, it drew 635,000, down 23%. Also unfortunate is that, because of My Boys‘ summer run and uncertain future, its stars Jordana Spiro and Kyle Howard had to pull out of their newly picked up NBC series, Love Bites and Perfect Couples, respectively. UPDATE: Despite Love Bites‘ anthology style, don’t look for Spiro to return to the show full-time now that she is free. That role has been reconceived, a network source said. But the My Boys cutie will no doubt get a ton of other offers soon.

Too bad. Whose dumb idea was it to put it on Sunday night? That does it for me and TBS.
At least it frees up space for some more Tyler Perry. And by “at least,” I mean shit.
So true.
A…….men! It might as well be the Tyler Perry Network!
So does that mean Isaiah Mustafa will be getting his own show? Wherein he will be contractually obligated to remain sans shirt for the entirety of each episode?
Um, what’s “My Boys”?
Sucks for Spiro and Howard, but I think everyone saw this coming.
All of the fans seemed to be on the internet. Tarses knew this was coming.
Noooooo! This was one of the only shows on the air that did not depict the main female character as a shoe shopping, gum snapping, hair twirling, boy crazy ninny. Thanks for the memories, TBS. Now back to your regularly scheduled programming featuring girls fretting over engagements and having babies…
By axing this show, they can use the money from the cast’s salaries to pay for some better writers for Conan.
As Coco would say: My plan is working perfectly.
They should never have moved it to Sunday knowing it would be killed by Mad Men, True Blood, etc.
You say that like Mad Men has a huge following. The fact is My Boys has never grabbed an audience. People should be happy it got four seasons. The show wasn’t even pulling a million viewers. Seinfeld reruns do better than that.
Mad Men is a premium property, an anchor show. It’s like the $150 martini at a restaurant, it’s there to add prestige and draw attention to the network’s other programming. So it can live on fewer eyeballs long as it’s accomplishing that task. So ya, ‘My Boys’ was lucky, ’cause they were getting neither.
How many episodes is four seasons on TBS? 24 to 36?
The show had 49 episodes. People are complaining, but that is a great run for a show that could never find an actual audience. We all wish the networks would be that patient with a proven ratings loser.
I’m heartbroken.
Silly, worthless show. The idea of the series was that she was a tomboyish girl amongst a group of guy buddies, yet she sleeps with/dates two of them, completely negating the show’s intent. And Jim Gaffigan… you could do better.
A shame for those two actors who missed a chance to be on network shows that may have better shown off their talents(?), but ah well, that’s life.
Nah, you’re definitely selling the show short. It was pretty clever, and it had an enormously likable cast. Jordana Spiro shouldn’t worry. She’s way too talented not to find work elsewhere after this. Check out “Must Love Dogs.” She’s hilarious in it. Great comedic timing.
What a shame – when it debuted, this was the freshest sitcom on tv. Each season got better and better. With its great writing and amazing cast, MY BOYS was one of the few smart, funny shows out there. Damn.
Sunday night was an awful thing to do to the show. And it was on so late. Didn’t understand it at all. We would DVR it. We really loved the show/cast. Really too bad. TBS ruined the show. If more people knew about it and it was on at a decent time/day I bet it would have had a much bigger following. ABC should pick it up.
Way to go, TBS. Looking forward to 90 new episodes of Ice Cube’s crapfest, 4,000 new Tyler Perry shows… and more Tyler Perry.
“My Boys” deserved better.
This was one of the smartest little shows on TV in the last few years. The characters actually felt like a group of friends- the writing was tight, the timing was impeccable. TBS didn’t know what to do with it and it showed. They should have just admitted at the upfronts this would be the last season and let the actors go, rather than saying it was up to ratings and giving it a time slot where it had no chance and giving it no promotion.
Makes room for “Glory Daze.” Same demographic.
Hahahaha!!!!
Enuff with the T.P.
stupid show. glad it’s gone. now if only tyler perry’s nonsense could meet the same fate…
I just don’t get this. Less than 1 million people watch my boys, Tyler Perry’s programs get at least 3.5 million viewers. Tyler wins in every single demo (18-49, 18-34).
TBS is not going to remove Tyler’s shows and put on lower rated programming. That would be asinine.
And I can’t stand Tyler’s shows. They’re horrific, but people watch them.
I’m not entirely sure why TBS ever bothered renewing after the first season. It was a funny, well written show and a great ensemble cast that from season one the network treated like crap. They dumped the last 5 of the first 13 episodes over three days at the end of December 2006. Most if not all the following “seasons” were just nine episodes. The cast and crew of “My Boys” deserved better than the treatment they got at the network, and specifically Spiro and Howard got completely shafted.
damn shame. such a great ensemble. kudos to all the actors, directors, producers, and especially the casting office. looking forward to whatever these actors do next!
TBS is really Tyler Perry’s network. Yes, the shows are super-stupid, but people do watch them so…
why in the world did spiro and howard have to drop out if they weren’t gonna shoot another season — can they sue? They just cost them another show….
Loved My Boys and this last season was great. The cast had great chemistry and the writing was sharp and funny. Not all of it was laugh out loud funny but funny nonetheless. Why oh why TBS would you put your best show on Sundays at 10PM. It’s a sitcom. But I guess ratings are ratings and people are stupid and never watch the good stuff
This show was dreadful and it’s cancellation comes as a surprise to no one except the small handful of fans who even knew this show existed. I dare anyone to ask five of their friends or fellow co-workers if they have even heard of this show and you will most likely get a resounding “no.”
Loved the show. Great cast. Great writing. Great execution. What a shame. The networks would do extremely well by this show. I don’t think this is the end for MY BOYS. It’s just the beginning…
Never watched this but what TBS did by delaying the announcement (which I’m sure they knew what the decision was for a while) is a crummy thing to do as it cost the actors other jobs.
It’ll be interesting to see what kind of marketing push TBS gives Glory Daze in advance of it’s November debut. I like the cast.
