TNT and TBS have just handed out pilot orders to 4 projects, including TNT’s planned Dallas update. TNT’s orders include Dallas, written by Cane creator Cynthia Cidre, crime procedural Perception (formerly Proof) and an untitled project from Allan Loeb (form. the Rabbit Factory), while TBS has picked up the Dean Devlin-produced comedic detective series Brain Trust. Here is the networks’ announcement:
TNT and TBS are going into production on four series pilots, including projects from such successful producers and writers as Dean Devlin (TNT’s Leverage); Marco Schnabel (TNT’s The Librarian movie trilogy); Kenneth Biller and Mike Sussman (Star Trek: Voyager); Allan Loeb (Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps); and Cynthia Cidre (The Mambo Kings).
“These pilots reflect our enthusiasm for relatable but complex everyman heroes, showcased in exciting storytelling environments,” said Michael Wright, executive vice president, head of programming for TNT, TBS and Turner Classic Movies (TCM).“They also reflect our reliance on extraordinary talent to deliver on the promise of quality series television. The writers of these projects bring great intelligence, heart and humor to their work. We are confident each of these projects would be a terrific addition to our original series line-up.”
The following are the three pilots in the works for TNT:
PERCEPTION (working title) – Executive producer Kenneth Biller (Star Trek: Voyager, Legend of the Seeker) and co-executive producer Mike Sussman (Star Trek: Voyager) penned the pilot for this drama about Dr. Geoffrey Pierce, an eccentric neuroscientist who uses his unique outlook to help the federal government solve complex cases. With an intimate knowledge of human behavior and a masterful understanding of the mind, this quirky, crime-solving doctor pulls lessons from an odd and imaginative view of the world. This pilot is being produced by ABC Studios. The project was part of TNT’s 2009 development slate.Untitled Allan Loeb Project – Executive producer/writer Allan Loeb, whose recent screenplays include The Switch and Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps, has crafted this drama based on The Rabbit Factory by novelist Marshall Karp. Recently widowed police Detective Mike Lomax and his newly married partner, Terry Biggs, delve into a world of mystery, intrigue and occasional hijinks. Lomax, who continues to receive humorous and heartfelt weekly letters from his wife a year after her death, tries to navigate the singles world while also maintaining his pedigree as one of L.A.’s finest. This pilot comes to TNT from Lionsgate Television. It was was originally featured on TBS’ development slate announced at the Turner networks’ upfront presentation in May.
DALLAS – Executive producer Cynthia Cidre, writer of the acclaimed film The Mambo Kings and creator/executive producer of the TV series Cane, has crafted an update of the long-running series about the Ewings of Southfork, whose betrayals, jealousies and passions have made them famous. The story focuses on the offspring of bitter rivals and brothers JR and Bobby Ewing, who clash over the future of the Ewing dynasty while the fate of Southfork itself weighs in the balance. This project, based upon the iconic series created by David Jacobs, comes to TNT from Warner Horizon Television.
TBS is moving forward on the following pilot:
BRAIN TRUST (working title) – Dean Devlin, executive producer of TNT’s hit series Leverage, is teaming up with Marco Schnabel (TNT’s The Librarian movie trilogy) for this pilot about Detective Billy Doyle, whose career and life have hit rock bottom after he accidentally ends his partner’s career. Doyle’s life gets turned around, however, when a recent murder case gets unexpected and unconventional help from three hyper-smart geniuses from a private think tank. If Doyle can survive the chaos and keep these new partners in line, they just may be the antidote to resurrect his career and, ultimately, his life. BRAIN TRUST (working title) is being produced for TBS by Devlin’s Electric Entertainment.
TNT is wrapping a successful summer, launching a bona fide hit series in Rizzoli & Isles and seeing The Closer rise in the ratings in season 6 when paired with Rizzoli. The network has already renewed 3 series this summer, Rizzoli, The Closer and Leverage, with a pickup of another rookie, Memphis Beat, also considered likely.

Am I the only one who wants to see Ian McShane on a Dallas update, or am I just suffering from Deadwood withdrawal?
As I recall, Ian McShane was on the original Dallas as Sue Ellen’s lover.
His character’s name is Don Lockwood. He’s actually Sue Ellen’s second husband. In the reunion movies, she’s divorced him but still goes as Sue Ellen Lockwood.
How about TNT bring back Saving Grace now that Ms. Hunter’s character is dead? Deadwood alum Leon Rippy could continue his angelic magic with the rest of the cast who would no longer be bound by her infinite needs…
TNT has not let me down with Leverage and Rizzoli and Isles…Dallas, on cable, with a lot more freedom than network TV could ever give could work provided they have the right people in front and behind the camera
‘Dallas’? Really? The thing was on for 14 seasons. I think they’ve covered it. Why can’t we get new creations instead of going back to the same wells?
They all sound dreadfully boring.
I’m all for it…he can be some rival that wants to take over the Ewing empire
I wish either TNT or TBS could do an update on the series Ghost Whisperer. There are thousands of fans out there that would love to see it go on. Just check with the CBS Ghost Whisperer forum. People from all over the world still write on it and state how much they miss the show.
that abomination lasting as long as it did is a crime….hopefully we can all forget about Jennifer Love Hewitt and her deadpan self
Jeez, man, relax. You’re flaming a fan, not some egomaniacal insider. I’ve never seen the show but clearly there’s an audience, a large audience, for shows outside the mind-numbing crime/medical drama/90210 run of the mill garbage out there.
An updated DALLAS. How original.
Turns out it was all a dream. All this time, I thought TNT would have semi-original content.
Go back to sleep Bobby.
“Dallas?” For real? TNT just lost me. Anyone old enough to even remember that relic doesn’t watch this kind of shit anymore. And anyone young enough interested in this kind of shit has no recollection of Dallas in the first place. Silly! Stupid! TNT! The Nitwit Network!
Been there, done that, please not again. Isn’t this type of show more appropriate for times when people have money to flush, instead of going down the toilet themselves?
Actually, _Dallas_ originally started during the recession of the late 1970′s, and that was the point.
Plus, since most of the major story lines were actually “ripped from the headlines,” a _Dallas_ update has been long overdue. Most of JR and Cliff Barnes’ dealings were based upon real things going on at Exxon, or Enron. When Ross Perot hired mercenaries to invade Iran, JR hired mercenaries to blow up Saudi Arabian oil fields and drive the price of oil up. When Ken Lay made billions by stumbling onto the biggest natural gas reserve in Texas, Cliff Barnes did it on TV.
Discussion of a _Dallas_ revival has been going on since 2002, since there has not been an adequate treatment of the corporate scandals and financial crises of the last decade (though I look forward to seeing the _Wall Street_ sequel when it comes out on DVD, especially since the original movie predicted exactly what’s happened in 20 years).G
Where is Dynasty? The Colbys? Falcon Crest? hell… Knots Landing?
John Ross vs. Christopher on Dallas? I’m in, but casting is going to be critical for this show to work. Cameos ONLY by any original cast members. Oh, and Ian McShane WAS on the original Dallas as a love interest for Sue Ellen after her final divorce from JR.
I dunno, I always thought a new “Dallas”could be a multi-generational thing, with the grown-up Ewing boys John Ross and Christopher being the young hunks and the surviving original cast members for the old heads. Only Hagman is in bad health from what I hear. The others are still looking good, yes, including Charlene Tilton! With all these oil spills, Iraq incursions, Muslims going insane, the Bush/Bandar/Carlyle Group/Saudi connection and all that is going on in real life, it may be time for “Dallas” again.
PS: I always thought Jim Profit was J.R. 2.0, more evil.
Yes. More Jim Profit, please.
Remember when Cliff Barnes found out he was the father of Afton’s daughter? That could be spicy…And Afton (Audrey Landers) is still hot!Bring her back!!
Please, don’t try to take “Memphis Beat” off the network. My family and I loved Jason Lee and the songs are just out of site. Loved the show. KEEP IT!!!
TV vs. FILM?
I hear a lot of debate like “TV allows you to explore the characters in depth” etc… but for me so many times one-hour dramatic TV gets so BORING. In our “I want it now culture” I feel I learn more from a two-hour movie packed with twists, turns, and insights…. Some of these TV dramas are so slow going and resolve only one maybe two issues in an hour. Then with all the camera work they promote “fluff” or “lifestyle filmmaking” (this angle makes me feel in this mood/this song makes me fell this/let’s film him walking across the park for two minutes/ the interpretation of this scene reminds when I was in a cafe wearing my beret and so on and so on) over STORY. For me it’s film over TV. TV dramas at this current time abuse the viewer by not giving them enough and are boring….So I’m not expecting much from these new shows(TNT whatever) until these issues get resolved.
Dallas was one of the greatest shows EVER, and I have tons of respect for it. Only do it if it’s going to be done RIGHT. Which it very likely is not. There’s potential for another great show, and I’d be the first to check it out. Anyone who doesn’t recognize the impact Dallas had is not much of a person, IMO.
DALLAS!?!? really!?! here is an “original” idea for the network suits: how about picking up a a series, established with a vapid fanbase, great writing, terrific cinematography and teleplay… oh, and wonderfull actors… hey TNT!! grab “legend of the seker” and keep the fire burning!!
I thought a “vapid fanbase” was what most of television has–and what a lot of people think _Dallas_ had.
Is it still going to be centered around Ewing oil, were not an oil country anymore. I might watch it if they involve the other cast members now and then, that’s what I don’t about these remakes when they don’t involve the original characters. I loved it when they had the Ewing BBQ someone always ended up in the pool, it was usually Cliff Barnes. And the feuds between the Ewing’s and the Barnes, is what I tuned in for. Loved it when Cliff thought J.R. was going to give some of the Barnes wells back that his Dad Digger thought Jock had stole from him which started feud, then J.R. ordered the wells shut down. Which led up to the famous Who shot J.R. highest rated program ever, still can’t top that.
Brain Trust?…Reads like a show I worked on 3 years ago almost word for word! How can TNT go on the air without looking into plagiarism. Look at “E-8 Think Tank”,change a couple of names change the location and use the same story…Real original!
What’s next, TNT? Perhaps, a reboot of “Falcon Crest” or “Knots Landing”? Sheesh.
FC and KL…now that would be GREAT!! Much better than the crap on tv today.
AWESOME! Hope we get to see some of the old cast back! Even if this is a complete failure, would love to see the old cast even if just in a few more scenes. And wouldn’t it be an awesome relevation if suddenly Pam (Victoria Principal) were to make a surprise return for her son’s wedding? Thanks TNT!
i wonder if larry hagmann (i dream of jeannie&dallass fame) will return as the big bad boy boss of the ewing clan?? i cant see anyone else but him, playing jr ewing. was terriffic, in his jeannie days and on, dallass/
I am so excited about DALLAS. It is about time. And for all of you who are saying negative things about “the comeback”. I encourage each of you to go to http://www.ultimatedallas.com. The offical website for the original show. The fan base is STILL there. If it is done correctly, this could be a HUGE hit.
Actually Dallas was brought on in the late 70s and early 80s when our economy was just like it is now. So im all for it but it does have to be done just right.
