As far back as a year ago this October, I first reported that Comcast Corp COO/No. 2 Steve Burke would be running NBC Universal and replacing Jeff Zucker. And in November I explained that, because Burke would have his hands full there, Neil Smits from Charter Communication had been hired to assume Burke’s Comcast Cable Communications responsibilities. So today’s announcement is more than year old news to regular readers of Deadline Hollywood. Still, today’s official announcement really hits Zucker where it hurts coming just 2 1/2 weeks after he was shitcanned by Burke. Zucker on Friday decided to reveal his firing because he’d just finished negotiating his severance package. He sent an email to NBCU staff and told reporters Burke had made it clear that Comcast wanted to move on at the close of the deal so Zucker had to move off the top job.
Unlike Jeff who was widely regarded in Hollywood and NYC as a pretender to the throne, Steve is true showbiz royalty by blood. He’s the son of Dan Burke, the former president of Capital Cities/ABC before it was bought by Disney. The younger Burke graduated with an MBA from Harvard Business School then joined Disney in 1986 and founded Disney Stores, then served as president of Euro Disney. He kept rising and became ABC broadcasting president. But left 10 years ago to join Comcast, where Steve was the architect of the largest cable company’s 2004 hostile takeover attempt of Disney. (Burke’s loathing of FrankenEisner was an open secret.) I recall that, during the Mouse House bid, Burke pledged to return Disney’s animation to its former glory. I’m sure his intent now is to return NBC and Universal to their former glory. Finally:
PHILADELPHIA, PA and FAIRFIELD, CT –
SEPTEMBER 26, 2010 – Comcast and General Electric announced today that Stephen B. Burke will become chief executive officer of NBC Universal (NBCU) upon the close of Comcast’s acquisition of 51% of NBCU from GE.
Burke, 52, would succeed NBC Universal President and CEO Jeff Zucker, who will continue to serve in his position until the close of the transaction and will work with Mr. Burke to ensure a smooth leadership transition. Comcast and GE also said that there will be no additional structural or personnel announcements until the deal closing process and timing is certain. Comcast Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Brian L. Roberts said, “Steve Burke is an experienced, talented and visionary leader with over 25 years in the media and entertainment industry. Steve is one of the most well-respected executives in the industry, and I am confident that he will lead NBCU forward to a new era of growth.”
GE Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Jeff Immelt said, “I have known Steve Burke for many years and greatly respect him. He has deep expertise in this industry and I am very confident that he will be a strong leader for NBC Universal.”

He couldn’t do any worse. there’s nowhere for NBC Universal to go except up, thanks to Mr. Zucker.
I can smell the fresh air already …
So where will Zucker’s POD deal be? Someone is going to bite the bullet and give him a job, it’s only a matter of who.
Wow—I did not see that coming, what a surprise! LOL ROTFLMAO – All the employees think that comcast is the best thing (since sliced bread) for NBC. It is believed by the majority of the employees that comcast will ride in on a white horse and save the company, ha yes they will save the company but not the employees.
I keep hearing that comcast is a bare bones operation and takes no prisoners, and NBC employees would be well advised not to make any large purchases in the next year. Usually the first order of business is clean house, (can anyone say Jack Welch, hmmm?) JZ – first soldier to fall – more to come.
I previously worked for Comcast. They are really frugal financially. That’s both good and bad, but mainly good.
In 2008, prior to the market meltdown, Wall Street types were encouraging them to take on more debt. That advice was spurned and now it seems really smart.
I wouldn’t call them employee-friendly. Not saying they’re bad. But if the crap hits the fan, they’ll lop off heads without flinching.
Well Zucker is getting a taste of his own medicine Wonder if he chocked on it? Zucker successfully ran NBC into the subbasement. Here’s hoping Burke is more than a breath of fresh air and can begin to rebuild NBC. Good luck!
Is Steve Burke democrat, republican, tea partier? anyone know? Hope they don’t fuck up msnbc.
He gave to the National Republican Sentoral committee according to campaignmoney, but business is business and MSNBC is a good balance to FOX news.
NO ONE WATCHES MSNBC. Check out the ratings. If Steve is smart, he makes MSNBC fair and balanced and then the ratings will follow.
And here’s the evidence from politico.com: “Among cable news channels, Fox was the clear winner, with 42 percent of respondents saying it is their main source, compared with 30 percent who cited CNN and 12 percent who rely on MSNBC.”
Immelt forgot to add “and I’m sorry for making the dumbest hiring mistake in show business history, followed by my consistently rewarding failure. I miss Jack Welch, too”.
Comcast is coming in with a commitment to invest, Brian Roberts told us this in person at NCTA. Roberts also added that they are not planning to censor anything, they’re used to getting customer complaints over controversial content but they know business is business.
Burke. smart smart smart smart

What do we think of Angela Bromstad’s chances given that Zucker’s the one who brought her back from London? Wondering.. Hope we don’t see a blood bath over there, now that the head’s been cut off.
Chances: none. Same with Gaspin.
As long as he lets “Law & Order: Special Victims Unit” and “Law & Order: Los Angeles” live on NBC for years to come (until the show’s begin to flatline) and keep disputes between talk-show hosts and their timeslots down he’s okay in my book!
Just the beginning of the end of the NBC “Nothing But Crap” regime. Cronies are next. Is Mr. Gaspin polishing his resume or negotiating his parachute? Let’s find out….
Finally, good news for the peacock, which has been looking more like a turkey lately. Perhaps Mr. Burke will clean house and get rid of all those worthless senior executives, who have been consistently plucking the once proud and fancy feathers of NBC and Telemundo.
Zucker got what ws coming to him and that a damn good swift kick to the curb, which has been coming for a long time now. Jeff Immelt of GE should be the next one to feel that kick as well. Hoping Steve Burke can turn NBC’s misfortunes around once Comcast takes over. Bye Zucker!!!!
Speaking of who’s next…Why is Ron Meyer still at NBCU? Talk about teflon! The studio has not had a hit in years and the entire leadership at Universal Pictures is stale. What’s up with that????
To Mr. Burke,
First advice I give, get rid of the GE/NBC folks, especially in key positions.
The two factions carried out a destructive turf war and will only carry their own water…not yours, let alone Comcast.
Get rid of the problem by cutting it, forget about untangling this mess.
Besides, that’s what they did to all those companies they acquired and isn’t bonus season coming up?
I think your forgetting GE still owns 49% of NBCU, and they will probably want to protect their interests until they can unload the rest of it. Besides GE saddled it with debt. That’s how they made the deal work.
Glad the Z-man will be gone soon. He really Zucked up NBC big time. But how is it exactly that running Disney Stores qualifies one for the top job at NBC? Disney’s success has not always been a sure thing these last 10 years and there have been pretty big swings in both directions, especially with this summer’s poor Disney films (“Sorcerer’s Apprentice”, “Prince of Persia”). Walden Media seems to have won much of the “family-friendly” fare segment.
While Zucker was bad, many are still skeptical of the distributor (Comcast) now being one of the content providers. In the end, it probably means less choice for the customer. Massive mergers and takeovers start out talking about “synergy” and “strength”, then it is cut-and-slash now-redundant overhead (layoffs for thousands), then raise prices.
You need to keep reading….Burke became president of ABC Broadcasting after founding Disney Stores. He has experience.
I don’t envy anyone in the position of having to clean up the mess Zucker left behind. Good luck, Burke. You’re gonna need it.
I suspect that after the hurdles clear MSNBC is going to see some real changes. Especially thier primetime lineup from 5 to 8pm. In a new poll Bill O’Reilly had more name recogonition and influence where no one hasn’t even heard of Rachel Maddow for example. Question now will MSNBC exist or be dissolved?
Not one word in this chump’s resume about PRODUCING entertainment– that is, being a creative head, which is what NBC needs desperately to come back from the brink. Running cable systems is not the same as creating anything, you are simply buying product and pushing it through a monopoly storefront. Hollywood suits are a useless when it comes to creating good stuff to thrill the masses. Here we go with another loser at the top, picking winners blindly, and failing slowly again!!!!
Zangadoo….
Comcast has Ted Harbert for that creative job….and he is a good guy…he’ll let producers do their job…he is not a micro-manager..
Steve Burke will get the lay of the land and within 1 year…the network will start to come back…
At least we can hope…………..
I suspect that MSNBC will not continue exist in it’s current format and viewpoint. Fox consistantly beats them (and CNN and HLN combined) in the ratings and the only audience that MSNBC has is the 20% of the population that identifies themselves as liberal. I believe that ComCast is going to take the network from the far left to the middle to challenge Fox’s hold on independents and conservatives. I think the same thing will happen to their NBC news division. It could really pay off if they do it fast.
Seriously……..when is “Ronnie” going to get shown the door? Way over due. Talentless…..
