Ever since the NBC Universal-Comcast merger was announced last year, the obnoxious Lauren Zalaznick has been lobbying for a bigger role within the combined company. And, in the process, she’s made a pest of herself from what I hear. The president of NBC Universal Women & Lifestyle Entertainment Networks oversees Bravo, Oxygen, and iVillage, and has indicated not very subtlely that a small addition to her current portfolio, such as Comcast’s Style Network, won’t cut it. She’s also threatening to seek greener pastures elsewhere. Sources tell Deadline that Zalaznick took meetings recently with Viacom president/CEO Philippe Dauman and top Viacom cable executives execs including Van Toffler, president of MTV Networks Music /Films /Logo Group. Though these meetings have been described to Deadline as only exploratory, Zalaznick is trying to make Comcast & NBCU believe she’s being eyed for Judy McGrath’s job as chairman/CEO of MTV Networks. Interesting that, last December, Zalaznick was so worried there’d be no upward mobility for her post-merger that she floated speculation she was in advanced talks to take Brian Graden’s job as MTV President of Entertainment running MTV and VH1. Didn’t happen.
The problem for Zalaznick is that her persistent maneuvering is hurting her, not helping her. Meanwhile, Bonnie Hammer is sitting pretty on NBCU’s golden egg, overseeing the company’s most lucrative assets: USA Networks, SyFy, and their in-house studio that produces most of the channels’ series. Zalaznick has tried to make everybody think of herself on the same level as Hammer, even to the point of leaking to the media about it. “She’s the girl who never got asked to the prom in high school, and now she’s trying to make everybody believe she’s Prom Queen,’ one agent disses her. The fact is that Comcast has been debating between two management structures for the combined company’s cable assets: one with them split between Bonnie Hammer and Zalaznick, and one entirely under Hammer. Meanwhile, everyone expects Comcast’s Ted Harbert to move up and over in a very big job. But the intention for now is to keep Zalaznick in the fold and not be concerned if “she is feisty and she’ll be out the door if she is not happy,” as a source describes.
The upshot is that the publicity-hungry Zalaznick is just embarrassing herself by leaking like a sieve to the media to up her profile. As for McGrath, all indications are that her job is safe again for now. She had been rumored to be on her way out ever since her boss, Viacom CEO Tom Freston, was ousted in 2006. Yet she’s still there. McGrath is one of few holdovers from the early core group of MTV executives, joining MTV as a copywriter in the On-Air Promotions department in 1981, and working her way up to president. And now, after a rough patch, even big boss Dauman is boasting about Jersey Shore to Wall Street analysts as MTV has clawed its way back from the brink. As for Zalaznick, she’s been responsible for such trashy shows that would fit in swell with MTV’s swill.
I don’t understand how the woman who’s tops in women’s TV obviously hates women so much that her programming portrays them as grasping and greedy — that is when they’re not throwing physical punches on Oxygen’s Bad Girls, or verbal punches on Bravo’s The Real Housewives, or killing their families on Oxygen’s Snapped. But her act may be wearing thin, at last: ratings for Bravo’s most recent The Real Housewives of DC have been terrible. She has made Oxygen into a worse joke than its reality star Tori Spelling. She and mentor Jeff Zucker together lost Project Runway to Lifetime. And she has screwed up all attempts to make Zucker’s $600 million white elephant iVillage into a viable TV property. Her coining the gimmicky word “affluencer” to describe Bravo’s core audience (“Who doesn’t want to be that person with the cute boyfriend and the hot cellphone?” she told the NYT in 2008. “You want to influence people, and you want to have money. It’s like America.”) shows how morally bankrupt her thinking about TV and women is. I hope a special hell is reserved for female showbiz execs who degrade their own sex like this.
Another problem for Zalaznick is that she’s not well-liked inside the company except by the bosses she brown-nosed. Zucker’s affection now that he’s losing his job post-merger may be the kiss of death within NBCU for her. Jeff Gaspin also likes her, but then he and she worked together at VH1 years ago along with Magical Elves’ Jane Lipsitz. Outside NBCU, the agents gripe that she is terrible at returning phone calls, acts as if her “shit doesn’t stink”, and overall wields what little power she has with even less grace. Pissing off agents is bad TV biz.
Zalaznick is within the window now to negotiate a new NBCU contract. She may think that gives her leverage, but the insiders I spoke to think that just makes it easier for Comcast to oust her after the merger. I say: good riddance.
Editor-in-Chief Nikki Finke - tip her here.

If Lauren takes over for Judy then allow me to be among the first to express my condolences to Tony, David and Doug and anyone else who has to work with her. As you say Nikki, Lauren is obnoxious. Last but not least, say what you will about Ted but he is damn good at his job, he was good in his broadcast days and he has killed it over at E! No way does he not move up the chain when the takeover is complete.
Try getting her to weigh in on a cut. G-d forbid she actually takes 42 minutes of her day to watch an episode on her own network and give notes. And why on earth would someone at the presidential level want to give notes? What does she really do? This article is accurate. Everyone hates her. Bye bye.
Let the Schadenfreude rain in from all over the internet for this bag of hate…
Does anyone find it ironic that Lauren (and Jeff Gaspin) got fired from VH1? You said it perfectly when you said “she thinks her shit doesn’t stink”. She’s done a great job with Bravo and Oxygen, but if you think Van Toffler, Cyma Zarghami and Doug Herzog are going to report to her that’s a joke.
She should go along with the idiot who runs marketing over at E! Style and G4. Bad taste – and BORING!
Wow, “BORING” is one of Lauren’s favorite expressions. It’s usually accompanied by a predictible, condescending (and yes, most obnoxious) eye roll. I can’t imagine who wrote this self-serving, BS comment. Suzanne Kolb has more class, respect and talent than Zalanick could ever dream of attaining. As for Hell…a well-deserved destination.
And good riddance to her asshole assistant.
Unfortunately for her, she is hated by anyone other than her boss. While she is super smart she is also toxic to anyone in her midst. She is more abusive to her teams than i have every seen at a company. How did she last?
Wow, Nikki. This is you using your power to effectively RUN HOLLYWOOD. Or at least this one little piece of it.
How can Comcast hire Zalaznick now? Especially since the comments section is sure to unleash (at least) a decade’s worth of hate and bitterness on the woman.
That said, even without this, Bonnie Hammer seems like a shoo-in.
WOW – Lauren and Barry Diller assassinations on the same day…did you wake up on the wrong side of the bed?
For the record, there are lots of people who think she is a brilliant exec, and so what if she’s marketing herself a bit? Who wouldn’t in that environment?
At least she’s authentic, especially compared to Bonnie “Boehner Bake” Hammer…who’s so eager to take credit for the outstanding work done by Jeff Wachtel.
Ans she’s a Semiotics major at Brown…that’s almost Wellesley College level Nikki Baby…lighten up on a fellow Hot, Smart Jewess.
Still love the anger and fearlessness as always…
What purpose is served by bringing ethnic/religious background into the discussion? It has no real relevance to the topic.
Dear Lauren, you know everyone hates you, you know you’re done. Don’t let the door hit you. As for next career move, I recommend politics, you’re perfect for it.
I have been reading deadline for a few years now, and this is one of the most scathing personal articles I have read here. I loved reading every second of it. I don’t know Zalaznick and I’m not defending her. I just wanted to say that you have some big balls. Kudos to you Nikki.
Actually with regards to Housewives of DC, I like it best out of the whole franchise, and I have watched each damn city every season. WHY DC? For starters, the women actually complete sentences, aren’t really trash talking snapping fingers and injecting themselves with every kind of filler/silicone there is on the market. There is the soap opera angle with some cattiness, but it doesn’t make me feel dirty.
The show that I had a really hard time getting through was this past season’s RHONJ. That was offensive, and violent – and I’m not just talking about the hair pulling scene; I’m speaking of the damn dialogue – and BRAVO hung their hat on the “character” of Danielle for the WHOLE season. (and then proceeded to get rid of her) Talk about trashing women. The show should be cxld.
The other shows on Oxygen, well, I pretend they don’t exist – makes me nauseous to think this is how they’re choosing to fill their air time. Outrageous. Great job on setting women back. No, REALLY great job.
I just don’t understand how you can have a BUILT IN audience of women and screw it up?! Are they that out of touch with women and what they want???
Seriously, this woman has brought this on herself. She takes all the credit for work done by the teams, is solely devoted to her public persona at all cost. When will it stop? Comcast, be warned.
She is easily the rudest, most obnoxious, most insane executive i have worked with in the business. Bar none. Male or female. It’s not an exaggeration to say she is obsessed with Bonnie to a degree that borders on a mental disorder.
And yes, I have specific examples of these statements.
I have worked for her. It’s all true… I have no idea how people continue to put up with her…
I’ve worked with her; she is a liar and an opportunist and not to be trusted.
Thanks Nikki! Maybe if LZ goes away, then Andy Cohen that untalented, self-promoting douche will follow quickly behind….
She lucked into Real Housewives and Project Runway… both were already about to air when she got the gig. And she took credit for both. Some people have all the luck.
The above blog and comments/commentary sounds like a series this woman should have done a long time ago — a Real House Wives of NYC scripted version….maybe she’d be getting the kind of kudos and respect she’s looking for….art imitating life imitating Entourage…OY VEY!
Umm, Bob-do you really think the Real Housewives (of any city) are unscripted shows? Seriously? Just because the ‘script’ isn’t down on paper in the form we are all used to doesn’t mean it is not scripted.
Uuuum John, no I don’t think they aren’t planned and/or scripted—just not the big expensive drama she hasn’t done….
Hey, I love a gossipy slamdown as much as the next Internet troll — but I actually know Lauren Zalaznick, and I simply do not recognize the grotesque caricature of her that is represented in this post and this predictably anonymous comments section. While I may not like every show she puts on the air, I can testify that Lauren Z is one of the smartest people I’ve ever met in 25 years in the business. She’s demanding, yes, but that’s because her standards are high. It saddens me to think that people who have never met or worked with her will read this stuff and think that’s all there is to her.
I am so completely over hearing that tired old excuse in Hollywood. Plenty plenty plenty plenty very successful people in the world manage to care about doing well at their jobs without being mean and catty and cruel. Toxic bosses are nothing but a huge drain and detriment to a company. The tolerance of that management style really has to stop.
This article is exactly why I am madly in love with Nikki Finke.
I recall observing her self-promoting many years ago. Until reading this post I had no idea that she has done so well in the intervening years. I’m surprised as I wouldn’t have expected anyone to buy into her nonsense.
Not a favorable photo of LZ to say the least. She looks like an old Disney cartoon villain in this picture.
I knew something was turning me on!
For what it’s worth let me state that I worked for Lauren years ago and while she was easily the toughest boss I have ever had, she was also equally the smartest and most loyal. Once you came through for her she had your back.
And one of the previous comments made a statement that Gaspin and Lauren were fired from VH1. I can assure you Gaspin left after a falling out with Sykes, and Lauren and many of their team left on their own soon after. The years they ran VH1 were probably the most successful up to that point. And don’t forget the two schmucks Sykes replaced Gaspin and Lauren with were fired, along with Sykes, less than a year later.
You mean the way she ran Pop-up Video over and over? How did that work out?
….including the douche who is kissing her ass in the post right BELOW this one… he would step over her dead body to get her job… I bet wrote the post below and then called every headhunter trying to move in.
Would normally never comment in a space like this, but this post seems grossly unfair. Lauren is largely responsible for the hottest network on tv, and one that consistently takes great risks, including a recent show on the art world, for god sakes. She is consistently exciting to talk to, and occasionally intimidating, because she’s smart as fuck. This post feels like score-settling, not journalism. Am a huge fan of the site, but only when the attacks seem fair. This doesnt
What is “smart as fuck”? It must not be as smart as “smart as shit”, cause if she was smart as shit she would not have gotten herself in this position (outed on deadline and now trashed in comments). But what do I know- I am only smart as ass.
Like another “un-anonymous” commenter, Mr. Hirschorn might have acknowledged that Ms. Zalaznick is a longtime client. Which of course raises the question, “OK, so what does this guy REALLY think?” My guess is if you pumped him full of sodium pentothol, Mr. Hirschorn (who I believe created The Approval Matrix) would agree with Nikki and virtually every other contributor to this string– that Ms. Zalaznick enjoys a permanent place in the lower left quadrant of the Matrix: Lowbrow and Despicable.
like he isnt calling every headhunter he knows trying to step in their over her if she leaves, and MTV for that matter. so two faced and obvious.
I am saddened to discover that Lauren is not the person I thought she was. I worked with Lauren in her early days – on a feature film of a now mega-director. I was enamored with her smarts and charm and believed we had become friends. I let pass the episode when she went apoplectic when I called her one morning to let her know a set had been vandalized. She never apologized, but I assumed her loud phone conversation about the fact that it was the anniversary of a friend’s death was her explanation. Over the years, we remained friendly and in touch, but as she rose in power, the return calls came less frequently. Funny that every time I was in New York, she was conveniently “on the coast.” I finally sent her an email, as I would with any friend, asking her what was up. I was sent back one of the most vile, aggressive emails I have ever received. I assumed she had changed as many do with power, but I wonder if I really ever knew her at all?
Could we all just pause and realize something about Bravo? It’s the same two show types – reality competition and fishbowl – repeated over and over again. How is Top Chef different from Top Design or Work of Art? And really, how are the “Real Housewives” shows different from each other?
