EXCLUSIVE: Yet more proof that family comedy, especially one with a male point of view, is the hottest half-hour genre this buying season: shortly after CBS shelled out a put pilot commitment to a suburban dad comedy from writer Peter Knight and Happy Madison, a family comedy from writers Joe Port and Joe Wiseman and 20th Century Fox TV landed at Fox.
The project, which has a 24 and Big Day-type twist to it, centers on a headstrong patriarch who, determined to get some quality family time, embarks on a vacation with his extended family. Much like 24 and short-lived ABC comedy Big Day where each season chronicled the events that took place during the course of one day, each season of the Port/Wiseman comedy will take place during one summer vacation. UTA-repped Port and Wiseman are currently working on NBC’s midseason comedy Perfect Couples.

As usual, instead of trying something “new” or simply picking the “best,” networks just go with what’s “hot.” And usually “fail.”
Oh yay, another mediocre family comedy for the yuppy audiences. This genre is quickly becoming the most cliche thing on television.
Doesn’t sound at all like a live-action Glenn Martin DDS and I’m sure its twist will make it far more successful than Big Day. I could be wrong.
Why? ‘Cuz we’re the Griswalds! Hah!
Clearly as the success of Modern Family proves, the key is to imitate the most recent hit.
Id love to see a family oriented comedy about a quirky clan of republican vampires trying to tame their headstrong democrat son who refuses to feed on weak humans like the rest of his family.
LOL! Write it! Count me and millions of others as potential viewers. And don’t forget to include a character called Senator Wiggles, an evangelical family values Republican who hangs out in airport mens’ rooms looking to satisfy his cravings.
Yup. I would totally watch that show!
Count me in! I’ll make sure to get a Nielsen box so my viewing counts!
How about a quirky, white trash Republican clan and its diva matriarch from rural Alaska who gets thrust into the national spotlight and…oh wait.
Another male driven family comedy?
I hope one of these stupid networks buys 21st century family sitcom a la ‘Roseanne’.
You do realize that the only shows that more men watch then women are FOX animated comedies. Network television is dominated by female viewers.
Kristen – They already have that show. It’s called The Middle.
I’m a little surprised, FOX gave us “Married with Childern” and “That 70′s Show”, (both classics) now their live actions sit-coms are lucky be be renewed. I think “Sons of Tucson” was canceled during the opening credits.
DONE and DONE!!!!
Agree with Brick. I think family comedies that skew male seem like an odd choice for the genre unless you’ve got Cosby or someone in tow. I also don’t understand how the take away from Modern Family’s success is people want male-oriented family comedies. That show is pretty balanced between male and female and I suspect has a majority-female viewership.
And Modern Family I’m sure got criticized here for copying the successful Office’s mockumentary style. There is nothing new under the sun. This show could be great. It could be terrible. As with anything, it’s all about the execution.
Am I the only one who already sees the obvious parody?
Jack Bauer will do anything – and I mean ANYTHING – to force his family to enjoy their summer vacation.
Take a bite of that hot dog, Timmy. DO IT!!!!!
