EXCLUSIVE: As if Twentieth Century Fox and James Cameron haven’t made enough money off this movie… It was always the director’s intention to create the “ultimate box set” that went deeper into the filmmaker process and the Avatar journey for fans. I understand he was very involved with every aspect of the development of this Avatar Extended Collector’s Edition, even coming to the lot with his producing partner Jon Landau a few weeks ago to thank the entire home entertainment team that worked on it. The Collector’s set includes the film’s 3 versions — the original theatrical release, the re-release, and the extended special that is 16 minutes longer than the original. “As Jim describes it, you pop the disc in and immediately see something new – as the movie with begins on Earth with Jake,” an insider tells me. The Avatar Extended Collector’s Edition will be available on Blu-ray Disc and DVD everywhere in the United States and Canada on November 16th. International release dates and product information may vary by market:
LOS ANGELES, CA. (October 5th, 2010) – Director James Cameron is unlocking the secrets of Pandora and taking fans on a guided tour of his vision with the highly anticipated release of AVATAR Extended Collector’s Edition on Blu-ray and DVD releasing November 16th in North America and rolling out internationally from November 15th. These exclusive Extended Collector’s Editions come with iconic, collectible packaging to get fans to experience Pandora like never before. With three versions of the film, AVATAR fans will get an all-new extended cut of the film and hours of never-before seen material including over 45 minutes of amazing deleted scenes!
“I told our team — let’s do the ultimate box set of Avatar, with everything in it the fans could possibly want. There’s an extended length cut that’s sixteen minutes longer, plus documentaries, behind the scenes featurettes, artwork and over 45 minutes of deleted scenes. Everything worth putting into a special edition is in this set,” said James Cameron.
The three-disc AVATAR Extended Collector’s Edition Blu-ray and Theatrical Special Edition Re-Release DVD will both feature the original theatrical release, a special edition re-release, family audio track with all objectionable language removed and new collector’s extended cut with sixteen more minutes including an exclusive alternate opening Earth scene. Viewers will journey to the depths of Pandora with filmmakers during “Capturing Avatar“ an in-depth feature length documentary covering the 16 year filmmaker journey including all new interviews with James Cameron, Jon Landau and cast and crew exploring James Cameron’s unique vision for the film seen by more than 310 million people worldwide. The Oscar and Golden Globe winning epic is the highest grossing film of all time, taking in over $2.7 billion in worldwide box office. It is also the top-selling Blu-ray disc of all time.
The AVATAR Extended Collector’s Edition Blu-ray will also have even more bonus material and interactive viewing. Through the unparalleled, interactive technology of Blu-ray, fans can dive further into the world of the Na’vi and experience the #1 international sensation from behind the scenes, with a “master class” on the production of the film. Leveraging the interactivity of Blu-ray, viewers can experience the full film in three stages of production: Performance Capture, Template (1990’s video game version) and Final as well as a composite of all stages in “Pandora’s Box”. This will be supported with interviews by Jim Cameron and the filmmakers and serve as a “master class” on the making of AVATAR.

lucky for fox there’s a sucker born every minute. they need to move a hella discs to make up for the endless string of flops they’ve inflicted on us. rothman and sella are adressing the variety marketing summit? that’s a comedy goldmine!!
Looks good. I’m game– na’vi nudity?
Is this extended collectors set going to be in 3D? I thought I read somewhere that the Avatar 3D version will only be available to consumers who purchase a Panasonic 3D television set and BD player?
Jesus Christ doesn’t Cameron have enough money?
Jason, i read that somewhere too. think that’s still down the road aways. is the sequel green lit yet?
I read somewhere that the sequel isn’t expected to hit theaters until around 2013-14, mostly because Cameron’s doing some expeditions for possible filming opportunities in the deep-sea, and he has to write it first. Not to mention the always difficult green-light from the studio, especially when you tell them you want to make a movie twice as big, and twice as complicated as the original. I think he also wants to film 2 and 3 back to back in order to save time and money.
Shouldn’t be too difficult for James Cameron to get a greenlight for another Avatar movie, big guy.
Studios should limit his budget to something… well, reasonable, but not giving him the go-ahead for Avatar 2 would just be silly.
(Sequel’s really gonna suck though)
Here come the predictable whiners crying about Cameron and his money despite this edition was announced back in March, even before the first Blu-Ray came out, and the seperate release of Special Collectors edition has been the norm for years (see LOTR, King Kong, Titanic, etc)/
Yeah, you’re right, but they’re going to whine about it anyways, of course. Nothing new from 20th Century Fox or any other studio for that matter releasing multiple DVD’s of the same movie. But the Earth scene is included in the extended cut? I’m there.
46 minutes of unseen footage? Behind the scenes making-of docs? This is SO WHAT I’VE BEEN WAITING FOR. Avatar raised the bar so high it will take Hollywood at least 5 years to catch up, technologically. Now we get to take a peak beneath the hood.
the problem with avatar is that it’s such an obvious derivative mishmash of popular stories that it’s technological wonders wear off immediately after one viewing. so, fer fooks sake mr. cameron, leave us alone or create something totally original.
I’m more of a mind to say: 46 minutes of unseen footage? At a cost of how many millions? Whatever happened to “films should be edited in the typewriter?”
This is good news. After reading the script I found the movie to be lacking as a whole. Those extra minutes could go a long way to making this a legitimate classic. Which in its current form is just simply not.
I don’t understand why the first video release did so well when it was known up front there would be multiple re-releases with new material. I like Avatar, but I only rented the DVD knowing there would be a later DVD/Blu with hours of extras at a later point. I may even wait on this one knowing there will probably be an uber-platinum-director’s cut during the marketing push for Avatar 2.
I’m sick of the double dipping in video.
me too. But I love Avatar and James’ work. I definitely don’t care for people’s negativity towards the plot and stuff. It’s like, what more do you people want??
This is exactly why anyone who is an actual fan of the movie and bought it already on DVD/Blu needs to get their heads checked. You KNEW there would be a super-epic-deluxe version released with a slew of behind the scenes documentaries. Both the existing DVD/Blu releases have ZERO special features. Even if I was interested in owning this movie, I wouldn’t have considered buying the bare bones version for a second.
This is why I think it’s cold-hearted for studios to release multiple versions months/years apart. Be descent and release the bare bones and deluxe versions on the same day, some studios already do this. Don’t make uninformed morons pay double for a movie.
This is definitely something for the die hard fans only. There is no way the casual movie fan is going to splurge $50 for this rubbish. Avatar is like Titanic – it has suckered in a large number of people while everyone else wonders what the fuss is all about.
just download it and don’t buy it….they’re rich enough.
No commentary, no sale.
I’d prefer to purchase the extended cut DVD with the additional minutes of footage and the alternate beginning and the behind-the-scenes DVD, instead of getting an additional DVD of the same film, along with the extended cut DVD and the behind-the-scenes DVD (which I really enjoy). Somehow, spending $50 for three DVD’s which have the same film on each disc but in different versions doesn’t seem to make a whole lot of sense.
I’d gladly purchase a 2-disc Avatar Collectors Extended Cut DVD set if I got the extended cut of the movie and the behind the scenes DVD.
I hope one of the new editions fixes the audio. There were a few places where the bass was very disappointing. I expected massive quantities of bass when the Home Tree fell instead it was very anticlimatic audio wise.
If you don’t want something, don’t buy it. Some people really enjoy watching all the background info and extra scenes from the original movie, some don’t. Some people just want it because AVATAR is printed on the box and they feel like they MUST have everything from the movie. (There is a difference between interested collectors and completists, remember.) So buy it or don’t buy it—just don’t bitch about it.
I’m curious what the difference is exactly between the first two DVD discs? Seems exactly the same:(
