BREAKING: Sony Pictures Entertainment has offered the villain role in the Spider-Man reboot to Rhys Ifans. Studio insiders wouldn’t say which villain he’s playing, and there’s been speculation about a bunch of baddies. He’s the next piece in the puzzle after SPE hired Marc Webb to direct, Andrew Garfield to play the wall crawler and Emma Stone to play his first love Gwen Stacy. The Goblin had been involved in the Gwen Stacy storyline from the comics, but there have also been rumors that Spidey will battle Venom. Will tell you when I know for sure.
CULVER CITY, Calif., October 11, 2010 – Rhys Ifans will play the villain, opposite Andrew Garfield as Peter Parker and Emma Stone as Gwen Stacy, in the next installment of Spider-Man from Columbia Pictures and Marvel Studios, it was announced today by Amy Pascal, co-chairman of Sony Pictures Entertainment and Matt Tolmach, president of Columbia Pictures. The film, to be directed by Marc Webb from a screenplay by James Vanderbilt and produced by Avi Arad and Laura Ziskin, will begin production in December and will be released in theaters nationwide in 3D on July 3, 2012.
Commenting on the announcement, Tolmach said, “We have been very fortunate to attract some of the best actors working today to play the villains in the Spider-Man movies, and it is exciting to see that trend continue with Rhys Ifans. After seeing his performance in our upcoming film Anonymous, we’re in awe of his talent and think he’s the perfect choice to take on this role.”
The filmmakers prefer to not reveal which character Ifans will be playing in the forthcoming film.
Webb added, “What sets the Spider-Man villains apart is the complexity of their relationships with Peter Parker. Rhys’ incredible ability to embody both warmth and rage makes him the ideal choice for this character.”
Spider-Man is being overseen at the studio by Tolmach and Rachel O’Connor. Ifans is represented by United Talent Agency, Brillstein Entertainment Partners, and Independent Talent Group.
RHYS IFANS’ breakout performance came in 1999 in Roger Michell’s Notting Hill, opposite Julia Roberts and Hugh Grant, for which he received a BAFTA Film Award nomination for Best Performance by an Actor in a Supporting Role. Prior to that, Ifans starred in Heart, Twin Town, August, and Dancing at Lughnasa, and since then, he has appeared in more than 20 films, including Vanity Fair; Rancid Aluminium, Little Nicky; The Replacements; Hannibal Rising, Enduring Love; Human Nature; Formula 51; Hotel; The Shipping News; Once Upon A Time in the Midlands, Elizabeth: The Golden Age, Pirate Radio; Greenberg; and Nanny McPhee and the Big Bang. He will next appear in Mr. Nice, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Passion Play, and Columbia Pictures’ Anonymous, for director Roland Emmerich.
On television, he played the role of Peter Cook in Terry Johnson’s “Not Only But Always,” for which he won the BAFTA TV Award for Best Actor. He also appeared in “A Number.” In the theatre, Ifans has appeared in “Accidental Death of an Anarchist,” “Bad Finger,” “Volpone,” “Under Milk Wood,” “Beautiful Thing,” “Thyesters,” and, most recently, Patrick Marber’s adaptation of “Don Juan in Soho” at the Donmar Warehouse.

perfect for the green goblin of they do it the marvel way-
but the lizard would be the best!!!!!!!
He would work out as the vulture aswell if they shave his head.
Looks about right for Electro. Although I’d hoped they’d skew younger.
Deadline loves to drive the fanboy traffic to her site with scoops like this. That being said, this guy looks like Vulture to me. I’d be surprised if they use a villain they’ve used in the past, they need to create distance (like Batman) between the old franchise and the reboot.
It was my understanding back when Raimi was onboard that he wanted to use the Vulture and Sony definitely *did not* want to use the Vulture.
Carnage. I want Carnage.
Seriously though, we’ve had a trilogy where the Goblin was everywhere, and Lizard was teased (they should bring back Dylan Baker for Lizard), so why not bring go in another direction. Honestly, any villain but Goblin and I’m happy.
My first thought looking at his picture: Carnage.
Looks like a VULTURE to me.
I don’t think he’s the right choice to play an “industrialist” like Norman Osbourne/The Green Goblin–Betcha Webb wants to break out and do a villain that hasn’t been seen in live action before:
Ifans then could play:
Mysterio
Lizard
CARNAGE
I hope it is Green Goblin, this is the only way to proper re-boot this movie series is to have a Green Goblin/Gwen Stacy storyline that does not have the Green Goblin look like a Power Ranger.
Thank god the Sam Raimi reign for Spider-Man movies are over. Bring on the re-boot.
Let’s see… tall, thin, flair for chewing scenery when he’s playing a villain – I’m going to guess he’ll be playing Adrian Toones. Shave him, bit of make-up on his nose to give it a hook, a hump on his back and he’ll make an excellent Vulture.
He’ll be the Lizard.
Hey what about the shocker?
Oh god yes, The Shocker is the greatest villain ever. I’d be SO PUMPED if he was in the movie.
Shocker would make for some brilliant SFX but going on what Webb (great name for Director) said about ‘warmth’ and ‘rage’, It’s going to be Electro.
I doubt it will be the Vulture folks.
Raimi’s persistence that the 4th Spidey movie include the Vulture is what ultimately got him kicked out of the franchise.
Even most dedicated Spidey Comic fans are reluctant to have the Vulture. The Vulture is one of the crappiest and stupidest looking villains hands down, very uninteresting to say the least.
My vote is to start of this franchise proper and have a true and accurate Green Goblin. With the introduction to Gwen Stacy, it can be perfect. If Sony/Marvel is sure about including a villain that has never been introduced to the film series, here are some suggestions.
LIZARD (for god’s sake, he was teased for 3 movies already)
MYSTERIO (the original movie series, teased that this was Bruce Campbell all along, it is a shame this never came to be)
KRAVEN (This could work with the Lizard story Arc)
SCORPION
KING PIN
ELECTRO
And for those that want CARNAGE, that would be cool, but you need to establish and build up towards it. You first need to establish VENOM, etc.
I’m digging Serg’s analysis…it seems to be on point. I would especially love to see a Kraven-Lizard story where Spidey has to protect Lizard from Kraven even as Lizard is rampaging and Kraven is after the both of them.
After seeing his performance in “Greenberg,” I’m there no matter who he plays…..(except if it’s the Green Goblin).
Of course I’ll still be there (but I’ll be terribly skeptical for the entirety of the first act).
Yeah, I think he’d make a great Vulture.
I like the idea of Mysterio; not necessarily because Ifans looks like he’d fit the role, but more so because I think it would lend itself to what would hopefully be some interestingly dark and trippy conflicts.
I totally agree with Tim above- he looks 100% like Carnage. Even though they’re going with Gwen Stacy and Mary Jane, they’ll probably do a new villain, instead of retreading the old ones. They may throw Venom back in the mix as well, but he looks EXACTLY like Carnage. If that’s the case, great casting.
Sony was so desperate to use Venom as the villain before they forced him into a picture where he didn’t belong and the result was the much maligned “Spider-Man 3.” If Sam Raimi didn’t have enough veto power for their bad ideas, certainly Marc Webb doesn’t.
Clearly they haven’t learned their lesson.
My first thought was no. Just no. But then I remembered the creeptastic pyscho Ifans played in Enduring Love and I get it. Dude can do creepy really well. Shudder.
Carnage
Vultuer or Carnage ?
Guaranteed to be Electro.
He’s the only underdog with a somewhat warm side. Inferiority complex, low confidence.
Marc Webb: “Rhys’ incredible ability to embody both warmth and rage makes him the ideal choice for this character.”
Done deal.
My second choice would be Shocker.
Hey mike can you ask Sony who they are planning on hiring as composer ? It won’t be Danny Elfman that goes without saying but perhaps Howard Shore would take the gig. Please ask, they won’t return my calls
Thank goodness for Emma Stone: at least ONE AMERICAN is in this freaking movie!
Much like Viggo in the abomination ‘Psycho’ remake, Rhys Isisifans came out of the excretable ‘Greenberg’ with more evidence of hardcore star power, Duvall level. The casting of this film proves everything is being taken care of.
The costumes should look hand stitched.
