Bryan Singer is getting his green light on Jack the Giant Killer, and he’s now figuring out who’ll climb the vine and slay the oversized villain. I’m told it has become the role that young actors are circling. I’ve also heard that Singer’s sweet on Aaron Johnson, who played the title role in Kick-Ass, and portrayed the young John Lennon in Nowhere Boy. Now, Johnson is hardly a lock; New Line is seeing a lot of other young actors as well. Production will begin this spring.
The remake was developed by New Line as a dark re-telling of the Jack and the Beanstalk fable, with a script by Darren Lemke and Mark Bomback. Singer sparked to it when he was simultaneously developing X-Men: First Class to direct. When the Jack script needed work, though, Singer was momentarily tempted to do the X-Men project first. But Warner Bros, which once pulled Singer away from X-Men 3 to do Superman Returns when Fox took too long to close, wasn’t leaving the possibility for payback. Warner Bros locked Singer into a holding deal. Fox instead hired Matthew Vaughn, Johnson’s Kick-Ass helmer, to direct X-Men: First Class. Singer remains a producer.
Jack required a lot of visual effects prep work, and while that was happening, New Line brought in Singer’s The Usual Suspects scribe Christopher McQuarrie. That scribe, who also whipped X-Men Origins: Wolverine 2 into another early 2011 production start–with Darren Aronofsky directing Hugh Jackman–brought Jack to where it needed to be in order to get the green light from financiers Warner Bros and Legendary Pictures. Neal Moritz and David Dobkin are producing.

This would be PERFECT for Chord Overstreet.
Great look but can he act? Just slotting in a CW-type/teen heart-throb here isn’t the way to go. He has to carry a movie.
Johnson has already carried TWO – the excellent Nowhere Boy and the wildely overrated Kick-Ass (where he had considerable help from Chloe Moretz). I have no doubt he could easily handle a movie like this.
I think Johnson can carry a film but will his personal life be too big of a distraction to too many people?
There aren’t too many widely successful 20 year old actors with a baby much less a 43 year old fiancee. We can argue it shouldn’t matter, but of course it does.
Awesome. Bryan Singer is an great director. cant wait for this to come out…
Did you see his Superman?
TOM DESANTO is producing this and this movie will rule.
TOM DESANTO is the greatest producer working in Hollywood.
TOM DESANTO was the reason the two XMens were great and the lack of TOM DESANTO meant the third one sucked.
TOM DESANTO will make Jack the best ever.
Oh, go on!
Tom Desanto’s agent needs to get a hobby.
Tom Desanto’s name spelled backwards is
OTNASDE!!
that means ‘whatever’ in gleebspeak
Fresh face up and comer. Lots of choices, Lachlan Buchanan (Newcastle ) or Aaron is ok. Hard to look at him like a kid now knowing he’s married to a 40 year old. …..stud or naive. Just NO fox or cw actors
Awesome script awesome director can’t wait
Wasn’t Bryan supposed to helm a Battlestar Galactica feature film for Glen A. Larson?
They’re still developing the Galactica film. When (and if) it appears is anyone’s guess.
TOM DESANTO refers to himself in the third person!!!
