EXCLUSIVE: I’m told the agency has come on board following a cast and crew screening yesterday afternoon at London’s Empire Leicester Square cinema. ContentFilm International is handling overseas rights on the $25 million medieval action thriller, starring Paul Giamatti and James Purefoy. People at the screening tell me that Ironclad – which has been pitched as a 13th-century Saving Private Ryan – is pretty bloody stuff. It’s already sold to 15 territories including Square One Entertainment in Germany and DeAPlaneta for Spain.

Do they realize that in America, “IRONCLAD” is a popular line of non-stick cookware?
That’s All-Clad.
You mean All Clad not Ironclad.
Can’t wait to see this movie. I’ve followed it since ‘Film 2010 with Jonathan Ross’ reported the making of ‘Ironclad’. Looks wicked!
Great British cast – James Purefoy, Brian Cox, Jason Flemyng, Mackenzie Crook, Charles Dance and Derek Jacobi (legend!). Not to leave out the Americans – anyone who has seen Paul Giametti in ‘Sideways’ knows he is genius.
Love action movies and this looks really promising!!!
Do they realise that in America, “IRONCLAD” will be cooking on gas!
The film rocks. I was at the Empire with about 700 people. The place went nuts. There’s an 11 minute battle sequence that is one of the most violent/visceral i have seen. Paul Giamatti should get a BAFTA for his portrayal of King John.
So happy people are making these films.
This came out of nowhere. CAA repping it now? That’s gotta be a good thing.
From Wales to Los Angeles via London’s Empire Square!
Can’t believe that it looked so fantastic. Worth every day in the mud.
Here’s hoping for its success. James Purefoy deserves to be a bigger name than he is (plus, he coulda/shoulda been ‘Bond’ at one point or another). He was astonishing in ‘Rome,’ and great in ‘Solomon Kane,’ another film which has struggled to get distributed at all over here in the U.S. From my perusal of reviews and opinions on foreign screenings, there are loads of fans for this kind of material over here — why do distributors have trouble getting behind these films? ‘Centurion’ is another great recent example which deserved a wider theatrical berth — the combination of Neil Marshall, Fassbender, and Kurylenko delivered a strong genre/historical piece.
Nice ripped off slogan there! “Blood. Will. Run.”
STOLEN form a little indie film called AUTOMATON TRANSFUSION that was bought by Dimension a few years back. Not very Ironclad in planning the marketing.
I guess when you can’t create something original, just steal it from unknown films!
Losers!
Has to be a good thing if CAA Is involved
does she realize that in America, everyone else other than housewives know that Ironclad is a line of cookware?
I was at that screening, what a bore…see you on DVD.
Ukwilly, I too was at the screening. And for you to make a statement like that, you must have had your head up your arse.
I was gripped after the first 10 minutes, and thrown about the roller coaster that was Ironclad. pausing every so often to get my breath.
Well done to all that took part on this monster.
I was at the screening – it was a really tight action adventure and had me on the edge of my seat. I wanted to saddle up and ride off into battle! Now where’s my horse?
I agree with Bromley chris, I was there and the film was bloody brill you must of been in the wrong screen. Either that or your part got cut! Or your name was omitted from the credits, Oh I know Catering got more applause than your name.
I’ve seen the film, too, and the previous comments still don’t do it justice — If only Ridley Scott’s “Robin Hood” had been even a fraction this good! Giamatti is tremendous, Brian Cox is brilliant as always and James Purefoy is, finally, a major star. Do not miss…
The cookware is “All-Clad.” Please get it right.
I’ve been following this and I had read that the budget was more like £12 million, which is not quite $25 million as the £ hasn’t been over two bucks for a while. What I can’t figure out is how Purefoy drives that kind of budget (did anyone see “Solomon Kane?”), even with Giamatti plus a parade of cool character actors in the cast. Hmm… maybe Kate Mara’s the key? Or is it Jonathan English?
Are you INSANE!! You we’re in the wrong cinema watching the owl movie! I really was there and it blew the roof of the place. The battle scenes are amazing! It’s a great movie.
I was also at the screening and even though the gore was a little too much for me at times, I thoroughly enjoyed the film. You can’t beat a good ‘men (and a couple of women) on a mission’ movie.
The Welsh locations looked stunning.
I too was so fortunate to have been at the Ironclad screening at the Empire in London and I’d have to say that it was fantastic! I am not in the film industry and normally avoid movies with that degree of violence, but Ironclad struck a perfect balance between depicting the harsh conditions, conveying the anxiety and terror of a siege and delicately dealing with the emotional turmoil of two unlikey lovers – brilliant. I think this film really brought the story to life and much against my expectations I did not at all feel that the violence was being glorified. On the contrary, I felt the movie succeed to be genuine and believable while building and sustaining suspense on various levels throughout. Giamatti, Cox, Mara et al were great to watch and James Purefoy was just outstanding a ‘Must see’ in my book!
I agree, loved the film, costumes, set, acting what more can you say!
It’s a great film. The battle scenes are incredible – the first one got a major round of applause in the screening on Sat. Scenes from the film got previewed at Empire Magazine’s Movie-Con too and people were going crazy for it.
It’s about the battle of Hampton Roads? Does Giamatti play the Monitor or the Merrimac?
This film is going to be Soloman Kane meets the Mutant Chronicles meets Minotaur (JE’s last effort per IMDB, which sounds urgh…) — there ‘s a reason the UK Film Council is going under, films like this one.
So you haven’t seen any of the films you’re commenting on? Better save your money as there will be queues around the corner for this film, it’s awesome. That’s if you actually watch films.
Ironclad is terrific.
The battles scenes are awesome and bloody and very exciting. Paul Giamatti is amazing. He has one long, angry speech that pinned us back in our seats.
Purefoy is commanding, more so than I thought possible for him. He should burn his IMDB page and start fresh with this film.
Anyway, action fans will groove to this, bigtime. Better action than Ridley Scott’s bloated, lame Robin Hood.
There is a new actor in this called Aneurin Barnard, he plays the character called Guy i think! He stood out for me. He was in the Show Spring Awakening and won the Olivier award for best actor in a musical or entertainment role!
Get a real cast and maybe the world might care. Until then, take your Starz ‘premiere’, b-level, 12 mill pound production and admit defeat. The screening was a nightmare.
Wow, you’re not a happy bunny. Do you need a hug? I was at the screening and the movie got a terrific reception. It was action packed and had the audience clapping and whooping during the mega exciting battle scenes. How is that a nightmare?
…and you saw which movie? Just asking as you were surely not in the same cinema as me….
Not sure what cinema you were in but it definitely wasn’t showing Ironclad. Maybe one of the other crappy films you worked on?
If you did work on this one (cast and crew screening, duh!) you would be proud. Or did you not get a credit for whatever minor contribution you made? stop trashing things that don’t deserve it.
“Crawl back in your rowboat and go home”. Giamatti, the best!
Hey Shoot’emUp or should I say Hater, What are you talking about? I was lucky enough to be there and the audience loved the movie. Admit it, you didn’t get in to see it…tastes like sour grapes!
Great story, supreme cast, fantastic delivery – nuff said!
This is a very impressive movie – brutal and literate. BRAVEHEART with a brain. A MAN FOR ALL SEASONS with viscera. Director Jonathan English is served magnificently by a wonderful supporting cast (Charles Dance, Brian Cox, Derek Jacobi, Jason Flemyng) that makes the quiet moments just as vital and engrossing as the (very) bloody action sequences. As someone else mentioned “if only Ridley’s ROBIN HOOD had been as good”. I agree. I won’t be buying ROBIN on DVD, but oh yes. I WILL be investing in IRONCLAD on disc – after I’ve been to see it again on its release. Top notch.
