It is tricky to evaluate the ratings performance of CBS’ new daytime talk show The Talk as it doesn’t air against other network talk shows and it doesn’t run at the same time in every market (in most, it airs at 2 PM.) But in its debut yesterday, the show hosted by Sara Gilbert, Julie Chen, Holly Robinson Peete, Sharon Osbourne and Leah Remini averaged an OK 2.1/7 rating in the metered markets. That was up 24% from what the network did in the time slot a year ago with recently cancelled soap As the World Turns. It virtually tied the established network competition at 2 PM, soap One Life to Live, which did a 2.2. Ratings are important for The Talk because, as Chen’s husband, CBS CEO Leslie Moonves pointed out in his Good Luck video played during the premiere episode, if they’re are not good, he will cancel it. (Moonves’ message is at the end of the clip from The Talk below.)

Blah, blah, blah, blah, blah.
I thought that these women would be different than the View…so far I am not impressed. Holly, get a life…quite complaigning that you have a disabled son who has autism…you have all the $ in the world to help him…what about those who don’t. And you bitched about Palin…would you like a downs child too? Ladies, try and be positive that we as women can do…try and be different…than your show may stay on!!
I REALLY LOVR YOUR SHOW BUT I DON’T UNDERSTAND WHY YALL HAVE TO TALK ABOUT YOURSELVES SO MUCH? AND WHY LEAH AND SHARON HAVE TO ACT LIKE DIDN’NT DO ANYTHING WHEN THEY WERE YOUNG? EVERY TEEN TRIES THING AND THAT O.K.BECAUSE IF YOU DON’T EXPLORE YOURSELF YOU DON’T KNOW IT’S NOT FOR YOU! WHEN YALL START TO INTERVIEW PEOPLE YOU PUT YOURSELVES IN THEIR SITUATIONS,PLEASE JUST LET PEOPLE BE THEIRSELVES AND THEM TALK
this show is a travesty.
how julie chen can have so many shows on that network without shareholders and people complaining is insane!
i can think of nothing i’d rather do less than listen to those women yap. here’s hoping for a quick and painless cancellation.
This show is wonderful. It is real women talking about real issues. It is positive and fun. I am enjoying it very much.
so, tell me k, do any of these women face foreclosure or the termination of their employment ? You forget one fact, Real women, are NOT all celebrities nor do they face the same problems that the ‘average’ woman faces every day. It is naiveness such as this that allows them to classify themselves as ‘regular’ women.
Simple, shut it, julie’s hubby is the president of cbs
Don’t like it? Don’t watch. Here’s a suggestion, watch the constant bickering on The View.
I never watch daytime, but wanted to check this out and compare to the View. LOVE IT! This is fresh air, love Leah, Sara, Julie. Sharon already tired of from all the shows she’s been on – too hateful about too many people. Send her over to the View – she’d fit in there. Enough hate and politics on t.v. The Talk will hold an audience who is looking for a good time and being happy!
I hope it bombs. Can’t believe they cancelled As the World Turns for this crap. Les Moonves should be cancelled instead.
Okay, Les…when are you pulling the plug on your wife’s show?
I give it 90 days, although Julie may force Les to give her more time. Don’t worry, Julie, Les will come up with another idiotic idea as a forum for you. Just hope he doesn’t start putting you in his “hands on” CBS films as we all know how well that has gone to date.
Watched both yesterday and today. Here’s the hard truth: Melissa Gilbert came up with the idea, but she’s bland on the show. She says absolutely nothing, she just sits there. She should just be a producer and that’s it. Holly Peete contributes nothing at all. She talks but it’s pointless.
The real stars of the show are Leah Remini and Sharon Osbourne. They’re fun, funny, and profusely entertaining. And Julie Chen is the host-type who keeps the show on focus. And Winokour is a good field correspondent.
So yeah, they NEED to dump Gilbert and Peete and let Leah, Sharon, and Julie do their thing.
I agree, Les should be canceled. And Julie should be banned from TV. What a bore! I give the TALK one month. It’ll be canceled before Thanksgiving.
Asian. African American. Senior Citizen. Scientologist. Lesbian. Endomorph.
Have we locked in every demographic?
Soap operas still rule! Go OLTL!
What a bore of an hour! Fingers crossed for a quick death of this uncreative trainwreck! CBS affiliates will need to get together and have it pulled off the air!
Me0w, I think you mean Sara Gilbert, not Melissa.
It’s so awkward and icky. I just got a stomach ache. Les Moonves is so scary and such a thug. These women are so made up. It is so fake.
I feel their pain.
I’ve worked on several daytime shows so am also interested in what’s “new.” Problem is, the word “new” does not apply to this show. It doesn’t even pretend to offer viewers a fresh take on talk shows and six co-hosts is, as has been noted here, three too many. The biggest red flag of all: your first and only guest on your premiere show is Christie Brinkley? Yikes.
OLTL should kick this shows behind. I DVR’ed it and it was HORRIFIC. Not that OLTL is Shakespeare.
Meanwhile, on OLTL, Eli tried to kill Greg! Danielle discovered her mother is indeed alive! Echo clashed with Dorian! And Todd continued to suck.
WOAH! what a surprise here. The View’s ratings are already pretty high but I really didn’t think that OLTL had a chance of beating The Talk and it really wasn’t that close.
OLTL has been on fire lately quality wise and people love bragging about how good it is so that’s a really good sign right now that OLTL may have some room to grow here in the coming months.
I did sample The Talk for about 10 minutes yesterday and quickly turned the channel it was a horrible rip-off of The View and Leah Remini was not used as well as I hoped they used her b/c I know she knows how to stir it up in a rant or a debate.
I hope DAYS did well also although it wasn’t mentioned here. DAYS usually gets close to the ratings for their Monday shows.
Just goes to show the soaps are far from done and still kicking butt. These numbers for The Talk are going to get worse from here unless they pull a stunt to make people watch like The View does all the time.
* Julie sounds like she’s hosting Big Brother.
* Ozzy Osbourne, Russell Brand and Simon Cowell would be non-understandable, but better hosts.
* Wouldn’t they better if this was a reality show on Oxygen?
* The audience. Who is the warm-up guy? A blue whale could get them to laugh more. Many audience ‘prisoners’ look like they’d rather be cleaning an airplane septic system than watching ‘The Talk’…
* The positive: the plants on the stage look nice.
And based on ABC’s press release, OLTL and The Talk did not TIE at all. OLTL was ahead by 13% in viewers and significantly ahead in the prized 18-49 demo.
Yuck creepy looking sadistic characters, especially Julie chen. She needs a makeover. It’s not the fifties dear.
I think we’re all hopin for a train wreck. I’ve watched OLTL this past time (I’m a guy by the way) and man it’s gittin good. It will do better in the rating than this horrible piece of crap. I agree Les Moonves needs to make his wife stay at the Early Show and Big Brother. I have great respect for Julie Chen and some of the other women but this show gotta hit da bricks man. I was PO’d when I heard about this on Entertainment Tonight (Brad Bessey I hope you’re reading this). They had the nerve to reject other propsed ideas for this. I was really looking forward to a revival of Pyramid.
I sat through a bunch of “test” shows prior to the show’s premiere. They were working out the kinks and trying to find it’s “voice.”
Janet Witnour is a great on-field correspondent, but they need to put her in the studio more, as she has the personality and energy to match Leah Remini and Sharon Osborne.
As for the warm-up guy, stop picking on the poor soul. You have to do the best you can with what you’ve got, so if you’re stuck playing with less than a full deck of cards, you have no choice but to play the hand you are given.
As for the show, I would only see it as a stopgap until they finally come to their senses and expand “The Bold and the Beautiful” to an hour.
Does anyone have a tylenol please? I had a horrible headache after the 2nd show and was never so happy to see a commercial in my life.
If this show continues to outrate the soap it replaced at half the production cost or less (which it absolutely will be), it is a huge coup for CBS and a major validation for Lee Moonves. Sorry for all the soap fans, but that’s just the economics.
This show is to much fluff. It’s missing a guy in the cast. Sara And Holly are to timid to go up against Leah and Sharon….. Julie is same as Big Brother…way to nice. There is no real discussion on this show. I heard that they were approached to have a gay father of 3 in the cast that was conserative and not your typical gay guy, but they just went with there egos and did nothing. They need to make some immediate changes or they will not make it.
This show was SOOOO boring and most of the hosts have no personality and annoying. Most are a bunch of failed reality show contestants and judges or failed talk show hosts themselves like Osborne. ANd the best first guest you could get is Christie Brinkley? Didnt CBS at least have some CBS TV stars they could force on that show like Charlie Sheen? SOmeone to make news.
At least Leah got her girlfriend Jlo to appear on Tues but the s how as still awful, and felt awfully scripted. No spontenaity and I dont see any chemistry between them. It just feels like a cheap ripoff of the View. Even the name, The Talk? UGH
May I have two Sominex, please?
