CBS has greenlighted The Same Name, an hourlong pilot from one of the masters of comedic celebreality, Cris Abrego. The project, which Abrego executive produces with Eugene Young, is a fish-out-of water comedic series involving regular people and celebrities with whom they happen to share the same name. Each self-contained episode of the show, produced by Endemol-owned 51 Minds, will feature a celebrity as he/she trades life and careers with his/hers name doppelganger and will follow both as they see what it’s like to live in each others shoes. The Same Name is part of an expansion for UTA-repped Abrego who had done most of his business at VH1 so far. Along with frequent collaborator Mark Cronin, Abrego has been the go-to guy for the channel’s core celebreality fare with such series as The Surreal Life, Flavor of Love and Rock of Love. For CBS, The Same Name adds to the network’s growing slate of shows about celebrities or other rich people posing as regular folk, which includes reality hit Undercover Boss and series of specials I Get That a Lot.

I cannot believe this. I mentioned this an idea to my works mates this morning and it just got announced.
“Master of Comedic Celebreality.” Another way of saying he’s one lucky S.O.B.
They don’t get any luckier. His entire career is based ideas derived from other shows. Less than zero originality. Meanwhile his company has the highest death rate in Hollywood. Hopefully CBS will force him to cough up a little more $ for psyche evals.
Why you hating on someone who been working hard all of his life and now has made a name for himself. Haters.
This is an interesting idea. I regularly get e-mail from people who think I’m either the singer Chris Crosby who is related to Bing Crosby or the Chris Crosby who is a singer and reality TV star in the UK. And neither of them are even big celebrities.
Sounds pretty boring to be honest.
Good for Chris! Bad for Mark!
(Show sounds one note though. Not an authentic peek in like Undercover Boss.)
Oh please Undercover Boss is bad enough, more junk
Sounds like fun. I wonder what calibre of celebrity they’ll be able to get to take part though? Probably not the George Clooneys, possibly just the Pauly Shores.
I hope they call me.
Finally Tom Cruise will spend a day as Tom Kruse the motorized wheel chair dude. FML.
Will it be non-union? Why do Cris Abrego and Eugene Young hate America’s workers?
You’re making a fortune. Let your workers get health and other benefits! Let them retire one day!
An unfortunate side effect of the recession is the ongoing trend for broadcast suits to cut back on the budgets for new programming and development.
To the broadcast suits – Just how many fucking reality shows are we supposed to watch, you idiots? And this? A show based on the premise of people having the same name as a celebrity? C’mon! I can’t wait until I see what also constitutes a “celebrity” name as well.
Originality on American television is just about dead (some would say it died years ago).
You don’t like it don’t watch it and stop crying.
this is most unfortunate … for ME. My show (registered and all) is the Same Name Show … and though I think my overall show and concept would be more entertaining – I’m afraid this just completely cancelled me out (how many ‘same name’ shows with celebrities can you have?) … I wish him the best with his…
welp, on to the other concepts I suppose.
I am very intrigued by the idea of this show. Not only would I LOVE to swap places with Rachael Ray, but I am looking forward to seeing other people’s stories and what they go through having a celebrity name. I feel like the constant teasing, rude remarks and over all inconvenience of having a celebrity name would be worth it for the rest of my life if I could participate in something like this.
People without celebrity names might never understand what it is like to have to go the extra mile to have to prove you are not lying about your name and live in the shadow of a super star. I feel this show will at least give the world a peak at what its like and maybe we can catch a break here and there. It would be nice to go to into any bank, doctor’s office, or even just be able to wear a name tag without being reminded of who I am not.
I say yes to this show!
I recently heard about the new CBS TV Series The Same Name. I was born Tori Brenda Amos in 1975. I have dreamed of the day that I could meet the “Singer” Tori Amos. I would love to share with her my stories of sharing this famous name. Three days don’t go by that I don’t hear a remark about my name. From stalker, balloons, heavy breathers on the line, birthday day presents and people gathered at the front door to wait for Tori Amos’s arrival when I have an appointment! I would love to meet the “Singer Tori Amos” and share the “Tori Stories’!
I try to come up with new comments to people when they say “What were you parents thinking when the named you that?!” People are so rude and it’s funny. But some days, I just don’t want to say my name. Day after day, the comments get old. But I make the best of it. I just have to find the humor in all of it.
Hey was at a local bar (kicks) in my home town. Saw David Hasselhoff taking David Hasseloff place.
I went to school with and was even once considered a friend, he went to school, made a name for himself and is in a place many can only imagine. Best of luck with the new show.
