CNN today fired anchor Rick Sanchez a day after Sanchez assailed The Daily Show host John Stewart as a “bigot” and suggested that CNN and the other networks are run by Jews. Sanchez made his rant Thursday on the Sirius XM radio show “Stand Up! with Pete Dominick”. CNN acted within 24 hours. “Rick Sanchez is no longer with the company. We thank Rick for his years of service and we wish him well,” the Time Warner cable news channel said in a statement. Sanchez recently lost his afternoon show on CNN Rick’s List, which was by CNN Newsroom. He then hosted a primetime version of the show until this week when a new program hosted by former New York Gov. Eliot Spitzer and columnist Kathleen Parker launched in the slot. The Daily Show considered Sanchez an intellectual lightweight compared to CNN stars Anderson Cooper and Wolf Blizter and made him the butt of jokes, which Sanchez resented and thought was racist. (He’s Hispanic.) CNN has always fought some perceptions that it is pro-Arab and anti-Israel. In July, CNN fired veteran Middle East correspondent Octavia Nasr after she tweeted about the passing of Hezbollah’s Mohammad Hussein Fadlallah saying that she respected him a lot. So this is the second dramatic dismissal of a CNN personality over outside comments.

Are there many Jewish people in positions of power in the media and entertainment industry? Yes. But to say they “run everything” is a generalization and stereotype and yes, does come off sounding like an insult. First of all, Stewart is a comedian, but that doesn’t mean he doesn’t have zero intention of skewing views, especially if he can make his own more popular by contrasting them with someone else’s for comedic effect.
Colbert, for example, takes this technique to its extremes and hence uses caricature to satirize those he disagrees with.

Frankly, I don’t understand how Rick lasted this long. Many of his comments were insipid and if CNN was trying to improve on its image as the most trusted and unbiased news source – his program did nothing to elevate them.
It also disturbs me that many of these comments imply that one ethnic group (Jews, Hispanics, Billionaires, Rap Artists, Masons [joking or not]) could run, or unduly influence, a large global organization like CNN.

I listened to it. IMO not only did Sanchez not say what he is being accused of, but taking his remarks out of context and characterizing them as as they are being characterized is a great disservice. I also think the management at CNN so over reacted they may have given credence to the kind of accusations Sanchez is being accused of. Since when is it improper to mention the word Jew? Since when is a firing offense when taken in the context of a discussion about Sanchez’ own ethnicity and how he has been treated differently as a result.
I don’t think there was the slightest anti-semitic intention in his comments. I think he stated an opinion based on facts and his own life experience. Please listen to the entire interview and then see if you believe this was a firing offense.
I found Sanchez to be sincere, passionate and candid in his remarks. I did not find his remarks anti-semitic or indicative of any animus toward Jews. He went after Jon Stewart hammer and tong which should be fair game in view of the amount of crap Stewart has dished out to Sanchez.
