Conan O’Brien has really broken the bank with the latest promo for his upcoming TBS latenight talk show. In the just-released video, the comedian drives an explosives (and popcorn)-filled car off a cliff in the desert while a chamber orchestra plays nearby. The promo was directed by top commercial director Bryan Buckley who has helmed some 3 dozen Super Bowl commercials, including the 2009 Bud Light spot starring Conan. He won an Emmy for the Animals American Express commercial with Ellen DeGeneres. A slightly different cut of the Conan promo is being shown at movie theaters.

Sheer AWESOME-ness.
would have been even funnier if he had jeff zucker in the trunk.
he definitely never made a joke about spending a company’s money before… oh wait.
Not mentioned is that this is a trailer for Regal Theaters, to be shown in the previews. Hence the whole big-budget ridiculous explosions concept.
A metaphor for his show.
Totally agree. And interestingly, not “Very Funny” at all.
if only he had actually been in the car. such a tease.
i know its hard to be funny in short promos but damn i haven’t laughed once at any of his tbs promos. i think his new show will be one big fart. it’ll be a big deal at first, then dissipate, and no one will care quickly.
I want to like Conan. Wish I could. But there seems to be a desperation to be outre (as the French say) and it doesn’t work. I know he used to write for the Simpsons. The Simpsons are so direct in their derision of all things correct. I love that about them. Would that Conan could apply that to his own career. We just want him to calm down and be himself. I have to agree that the recent promo was not funny, not illustrative, not anything but a bad prank.
If it looks like a duck, and walks like a duck, it’s a duck. And this duck’s a turd. Just like his Tonight Show. Just say NoNo to CoCo.
Please, just fade into oblivion already.
Just his promos? I haven’t laughed at anything hes ever said or done. He’s not funny and never has been. Only retarded mentally disabled people laugh at his lame 5th grade humor.
Looks like he’s been watching to many James Bond movies and episodes of CHiPs…
Conan is the biggest tool I have ever seen, he has never been funny and I wish he would have been killed in that beautiful 69 Dodge Dart he destroyed, typical Liberalwood bullshit…
NOT ONLY mind numbingly unfunny but hardly original. Ernie Kovacs was doing bits like these— later recycled by Letterman— in the 1950′s.
Just like war in Iraq or Vietnam before, not to mention “Heaven’s Gate”, the bigger the budget the greater the disaster.
Conan needs to shave. I don’t wanna get scientific with this, but he’s a lot more funny when he’s cleanly shaven, and you can read his facial expressions. The beard just reminds people of his nervous breakdown after the Tonight Show.
Hope his show doesn’t bomb. Andy Richter isn’t helping anything.
On the fast track to a .3 share in the 18-34.
This spot is awesome.
Agreed! What’s with all of the Jay Lame-o fans on Deadline? I thought this site was cooler than that, to have a bunch of old people who like Jay Leno…
Why do you assume that those who don’t care for Conan like Leno. I for one am not fond of either.
Don’t blame Leno fans (I’m not one) or old people (I’m probably younger than you) for this turd named Conan. Your emporer has no clothes.
I’m willing to bet in 5 years, Leno will still be on the Tonight Show (and probably doing quite well) and Conan will be lucky to be in a middle side square of the “All New Hollywood Squares 2015.”
I’m ashamed of my generation for thinking CoCo is even remotely funny. Even this CoCo moniker is juvenile and unfunny.
Tell that to Tom Hanks, who popularized it for Conan.
Conan screwed up the whole Tonight Show deal, made Leno look bad. Conan was underhanded and a back-stabber. He sucked up to Jeff Zucker and tried to undercut Jay. Then Conan went on Oprah and came off very bad. He appeared to not be truthful.
That’s why I’m backing Jay.
You’ve got the names confused there buddy.
Totally. What the fuck is that guy on about?
Apparently your stupid and don’t know how to watch TV.
Big money: big mess; bad idea
We tossed a gasoline tanker off the same cliff in Fast and Furious!
That was a bad omen. Why not keep it very simple and cheap? Like when he opened up his first show when he pretended to hang himself. Oh well.
Conan, what part of paying you millions to go away do you not get?
He’ll get a rating that TBS can label a triumph – and maybe the ratings WILL be a triumph for TBS – but it’s a step down no matter what he’s being paid. This is overproduced and too over the top. The inference is that he’s event television like the Oscars or the Super Bowl. Definitely subliminally off-putting. It’s a freaking talk show that’s going to be on every night for God’s sake. What will the beard bit be do you think? On premiere night…will it be gone? Will we get a Hamlet-style soliloquy about it? Will he get shaved in a barber’s chair? A “found humor” thing? Just a riff? Is he gonna keep it? At least for a little while for dramatic purposes of narrative tension? If so…quick…name a successful talk show host who had a beard…off the top of your head…
Holy crap. The bitterness among the commenters is a little overwhelming. I’ve never been a big Conan fan, but to wish his show fail is horrible. What has the guy ever done to any of you? And I like how history seems to have rewritten what happened with the Tonight Show. Yes, Conan made Jay give up the Tonight Show and then made him take it back from him. That’s it.
Agrred: Should have had a Zucker in the trunk, wearing a suit, gagged and begging, etc. But of course, all the nerd-dork-buddies he uses as “writers” missed that opportunity… as they have always missed opportunities in every sketch they’ve ever done to be F-U-N-N-Y.
The guy is just so lame it hurts.
A fine bit of badassery.
The comments on this thread are just plain weird. Are these commenters from the Drudge? Or are they all people employed by Leno?
On no other thread mentioning late night, on any other site, except for perhaps AARP.com, do you ever see rampant Conan hate and Leno love. Nowhere. It flies against common sense. Conan – good guy. Stood up for his principles. Refused to move The Tonight Show to midnight. Like his humor or not, that’s a good man. I happen to not be a fan of his humor. I dislike this clip. But he is a good man that I respect.
Jay — underhanded. Zucker friend. Zucker lover. If not for Zucker would not still have the gig. Will always be linked to Zucker. Ratings currently the lowest since he started due to the backlash. Lied to Oprah’s face. Kimmel, Stewart, Ferguson, Colbert, all publicly LOATHE him.
what’s not to understand? Unless this is linked to Drudge again, and these commenters are the same people supporting Palin for president and that witch who’s running in Connecticut.
You aren’t too bright, are you? Do you see any terms like Obama, progressive, libs etc. in the above posts? No, but you would if Drudge was linking.
My personal hate for Conan is based on decades of observation of the craft, and in my eyes he is not only not funny, he’s unwatchable. He does not deserve to be on the air, anywhere. Leno and Zucker deserve disdain as well.
I know it must hurt to realize that you are standing up for someone who many of your peers detest. You seem a little too eager to be liked, not unlike Conan. And don’t forget to get your Drudge detector repaired.
Based on your “decades” comment, that would confirm his thesis that old people generally don’t like Conan. So it would seem that most of the people commenting here skew older.
You’re a joyless grinch.
Your “decades of observation”? Hey, old man, get back to the assisted living facility. Nobody cares what anyone over 49 thinks about TV.
Conan’s ratings hosting The Tonight Show were higher than Jay’s currently are. Put that in your corncob pipe and smoke it.
This comment makes no sense.
This is unfunny. Did anyone laugh when they watched it?
Also, it’s cheesily done and would have at least been interesting if maybe you couldn’t see the huge cut when the camera zoomed in on the roof of the car. I know I know, it was supposed to be cheesy. But was it supposed to make me laugh? Cuz it was just lame and a little terror-isty, which is dead serious the last time i checked.
If this is the humor we have to look forward to, then I won’t be watching. Full disclosure, I never thought any of his shows were ever funny. There were just a few somewhat humorous recurring bits that were thought up by one or two talented writers (not Conan)
So what made this “terror-isty” (is that even a word?)?
Explosives packed car, with fireworks, popcorn, and doused with gasoline driving off a cliff while a Chamber orchestra plays…
If only terrorists blew themselves up in isolation from innocent bystanders, that would be something we could all live with.
Not everything with explosives should remind you of terrorists unless you have a Pavlovian conditioned response now.
The clip is a joke, get yer funny pants on.
Did you read or watch any accounts of the Times Sq. incident? The terrorist went to a fireworks store and loaded his car with fireworks that were supposed to ignite other things in the car including gas cans. So- maybe you don’t pay attention to things like that- that’s cool, but aren’t you expecting something ORIGINAL from the new Conan show. All of this commenting is basically saying “i am looking for some new, light-hearted entertainment that makes me laugh” And that’s apparently not where Conan is going, based on this clip.
Tim W.
The bitterness towards Conan is overwhelming because we’re sick of having this guy, who’s really not much of a performer, shoved down our throat. There are literally, what? hundreds? thousands? of more talented comedians out there who were not given the opportunities and the money he’s had handed to him. Why the entertainment media feels compelled to do his bidding is beyond me.
Oh come on, that’s true of any person in a popular entertainment position – it’s never only about pure talent. He spent 16 years building a fan base and while this thread doesn’t reflect it, there are rabid supporters of him all across the country.
As opposed to Jay Leno, the comedic genius?
Give me a break.
Did I say anything about Jay? I don’t care about Jay.
Conan is not funny, he’s not talented, he’s not attractive, he has a weird thin voice and he can’t deliver a punchline to save his life. He doesn’t deserve a TV show, let alone breathless buzz from the media sites.
Unless stated otherwise contractually, his show will limp alone and be cancelled within one year.
Bitter, bitter, bitter. I Conan never called you back. Maybe he chewed his arm off and left it under your head!
Conan hasn’t been shoved down any of our throats, you’re just the one that chooses to comment on the stories that Nikki posts on her site about him. If you don’t like him, ignore the story, and quit acting like a total cunt.
Conan wishes he had the stones he’s trying to display here. Yet, ultimately they are tiny pebbles.
Truth is HE undermined Jay by scheming to take over the Tonight Show. And when he failed, and Jay took the show back, Conan whimpered like a sick puppy. He never showed remorse for trying to push Leno out. Why should Leno show remorse for ultimately besting Conan. The irony is sweet.
Conan was right to feel embarrassed. But he brought it on himself. All men eventually fall under the heel of their hubris.
Conan didn’t deserve the Tonight Show. And, he didn’t have the talent to keep it. He collected enough coin to last for a long time. And that’s good, because his career has been flushed. His display of adolescent pouting after he was demoted was pitiful.
This wasn’t a moral issue. It was business. Leno played a superior hand. He deserved the victory he attained. He’s a good man. And he beat Conan at his own game.
Conan didn’t do anything like that. The fact is that Jay was supposed to retire. he isn’t that funny. instead, NBC decides that they cant do what they promised conan so they make a show for jay and put it before the news. the same audience who wants to see the tonight show goes and watches jay’s earlier show. he gets the views, conan is set up to fail. in the end BOTH shows don’t perform well…they can’t let go of the brand of jay leno because it has a large brand equity (from years and years, not from talent necessarily) unlike conan’s couple of months, so they have to let conan go.
Conan wasn’t this master schemer that you are trying to make him out to be. he was just following his dream and the executives screwed things up for him. thats what happened. i would know, i’m an insider on these things. you have to be when you buy advertising
Come on, this whole argument is ludicrous. Conan wanted “The Tonight Show”, yes. His contract was up, he wanted to advance his career, and he asked for a promotion. Can you honestly blame someone for that?
How did Conan force Leno out, exactly? NBC approached Leno about it, and Leno agreed to retire. Nobody forced him. He could have refused to leave, and then NBC would’ve had to let Conan take his show to another network. But instead, Leno went with it. That was his call.
Ultimately, Leno gave his word to NBC and Conan, even went on the air to announce his retirement… and then changed his mind. I consider that extremely unprofessional, as do many others. But he has “Tonight” back and Conan has his new show, so it all worked out fine.
Forget all the political bull, Conan’s biggest problem is going head-to-head with Jon Stewart at 11PM. Major mistake.
