Just like its sister network CBS did yesterday, the CW today handed out full-season orders to all of its freshman series. In its case, it’s 2: Hellcats and Nikita. Also getting a full-season order is CW veteran One Tree Hill, which has been a solid ratings performer in its current eighth season. No decision yet on the fourth CW series originally picked up with a 13-episode order, sophomore Life Unexpected. After a promising uptick a couple of weeks ago, it has slipped again in the ratings and continues to rank as CW’s lowest-rated series. There is a glimmer of hope — the critically-praised drama recently received an order for 2
additional scripts, but its chances are slim. The network recently greenlighted dramedy pilot Danni Lowinski as a potential midseason replacement. The back-nine episodic orders for Hellcats and OTH follow the pickup of 6 additional scripts for both series a month ago. ”By giving our two freshman series and proven performer One Tree Hill full orders, we’ll be able to continue our success and momentum throughout the rest of the season,” CW entertainment president Dawn Ostroff said. Cheerleading drama Hellcats, starring Aly Michalka and Ashley Tisdale, has posted the best retention of any show to follow America’s Next Top Model and has dramatically improved the Wednesday 9 PM period. It is averaging 2.5 million viewers and a 1.2/4 in adults 18-34. The Maggie Q-starring Nikita (3.6 million) has become the second most-watched show on The CW behind its Thursday lead-in, flagship CW drama The Vampire Diaries.

michael roberts knows how to keep shows on the air!!!
CW has to pick up these series or do re-runs of Tyra and Mrs. J.
Surprisingly i really am enjoying Hellcats
I thought it would be horrendous
and Nikita is pretty good too
I think One Tree Hill will outlast Law and Order to go 21 seasons
Are you serious!!!!!!!!!! Really!!… that won’t happen as much as I love One Tree Hill.. Happy for the pick up because now Leyton return will maybe happen!!!!!!
ummm no I wasnt serious
LOL
Wow. Gullible!
I really hope they give a full season order to Life Unexpected. It’s a well-written and acted show with a lot of heart.
Agree about Hellcats – shockingly not a POS, actually quite well done, engaging and interesting. Nikita not quite so much, but not despicable. Reminds me of Terminator Chronicles or whatever it was called. Or that Jessica Alba show that Cameron produced. One Tree Hill I find just unbearable. It’s like having an estrogen-soaked dishtowel wrung out over my head.
love “Life Unexpected” – hope it makes it.
I don’t wanna see Life Unexpected go
HOORAY ONE TREE HILL!!! <3
Thanks. Love ‘Life Unexpected,’ hope it gets picked up. What about ‘GG’?
@ A- GG, 90210, The Vampire Diaries, Supernatural, and Smallville all had full season pick ups before the tv season even premiered
All other CW shows (GG, 90210, SV, SN, VD) all already have full season orders.
WOO HOO I AM SO HAPPY ONE TREE HILL IS STAING ON. I THOUGHT THIS WAS THE END OF THE SERIES. THIS MAKES MY DAY
Good for Nikita. Still not in love with Shane West’s angry, petulant version of Michael, and the girl playing Alex could use a couple of acting classes, but Maggie Q and Xander Berkeley are both pretty terrific.
I think Life Unexpected is a great show. CW is known in my book for dropping the well-written, witty, family-friendly dramas/dramedies with strong female leads, aside from Gilmore Girls. And I think we can all agree it really let down Gilmore its final season by refusing to retain Amy Sherman-Palladino, and the show and its fans suffered for it. It let Privileged, Related, and Veronica Mars all go without enough fight. I hope it doesn’t repeat those mistakes by giving up on Life Unexpected. Find it a good time slot and show a little faith in it. What should a fan do if all they read since the show’s birth is that CW is considering canceling it? Would you invest? Come on CW–tell everyone why they need to watch it instead of giving them plenty of reasons to steer clear so their heart isn’t ripped out when you ditch it. OTH was cooked three seasons ago, but they continue to support it. Doesn’t anyone care about quality anymore? Is it really all about the bottom line instead of the art? Grr.
heybeulla,
thanks for your support.. our fans are loyal.. we just need to drum up a few hundred thousand more.
James,
Definitely agree with your take on Michael and Xander, I think the take on Michael is especially weird (but perhaps I’ll grow into it) after the understated direction of Roy Dupuis during the previous series. This Michael seems much more petulant, well said. It doesn’t fit for me.
Xander Berkeley — not much to say really, just solid, and continuing to get better each episode.
My only other critique would be that I haven’t felt much of anything watching Amanda. I had been rather afraid of her as a child during the original series, but this incarnation seems quite … tame by comparison.
the prob with Life Unexpected is that lame title. They should have just stuck with the script tile Light Years or something.
I hope they keep Life Unexpected. Much better than anything on the network.
They really need to stop with the repetitive story lines and PLEASE change the “previously on Life Unexpected”…it’s practically the same from the second episode of season 1…
Amazing! Hellcats is a “dramatic improvement” over a REPEAT OF FAILING MELROSE PLACE?? You’re kidding! Come on, CW, tell the truth: how can a first-run, all new series possibly be an improvement over a rerun? How?? Next thing, you’re gonna tell us that Supernatural is an improvement over a repeat of reality greybeard Top Model on Friday, right? Long live repeats!! Especially when, in the age of DVRs and online viewing, they mean absolutely NOTHING.
I absolutely love One Tree Hill! (:
In my opinion its the best show i’ve ever watched, this is the only show I actually say “I cant do that cause One Tree Hill comes on tonight” Its exciting!
