EXCLUSIVE: In a move that might not make James Cameron’s day, Dimension Films has locked in a director and writers and will race to get a Piranha 3D sequel up and running quickly enough to hit theaters by late August, 2011. Dimension has set John Gulager to direct and Saw 3D scribes Patrick Melton and Marcus Dunstan to write Piranha 3 DD, the sequel to last summer’s toothy fish fest that found itself earning the ire of Cameron. The filmmaker cited it as an example of the hasty 3D conversions, while he was barnstorming for Avatar. That led to a sharp — and lengthy — rebuke from Piranha 3D’s producer Mark Canton. For the sequel, Dimension’s Bob Weinstein has reassembled the team behind Feast, the Dimension horror film that served as a season of the TV show Project Greenlight. The director and writers got their starts on that low-budget horror film. Gulager went on to direct two Feast sequels while the scribes moved on to write four installments of the Saw franchise. They recently set an updated version of the classic anthology series The Outer Limits at MGM.
The Alexandre Aja-directed Piranha 3D got decent reviews for being a self-aware film that didn’t take itself too seriously as it unleashed a prehistoric piranha pack on an unsuspecting crowd of scantily-clad, drunken spring breakers. Much of the cast, including Eli Roth, became chum in the bloody waters, but whoever remains from the original cast might be back, along with some surprising thesps who’ll serve as fresh meat. Making a late summer date will be difficult, but not impossible, if the writers nail the script in the next four weeks. Let’s face it, they aren’t writing Citizen Kane here. Clearly, Dimension smells money in the water and doesn’t want to wait an extra summer to cash in. The original, which cost $20 million to make and another $20 million to market, has chomped its way to a worldwide gross of $71 million so far, with Japan and several other territories still to open. The scribes are repped by Underground and APA.
Mark Canton Bites Back At Jim Cameron For Filleting ‘Piranha 3D’

Melton & Dunstan are the best! Funny and scary dudes and Marcus is scary for a bunch of reasons.
I donno, Marcus has always struck me as rather jovial. Of course, I’ve never had a deep conversation with the guy.
It’s easily possible for a film of this caliber to be done and dusted by August. Lethal Weapon 4 didn’t start shooting until January 1998 and was in theatres that summer.
Really? That is shocking! I thought the 1 year turnaround for Cowboys vs Aliens after Iron Man 2 was tight!
The reviews may have been good, but the movie wasn’t nearly as fun as it could have been. Part of the reason could be because the 3D made it look so cloudy that you couldn’t see half of the stuff that was happening when the Piranha’s attacked. And that is a shame because the practical effects work was superb. Those aftermath shots of the folks crawling on the beach was just gross and very realistic looking. Cameron had a right to complain about 3D conversion. 3D conversion ruins it for movies filmed in REAL 3D, people can’t tell the difference until they have paid 15 bucks for a ticket, and when they feel duped they are turned off to 3D entirely. It shouldn’t be Post Converted 3D, it should be filmed in 3D.
And maybe the writers will A) Focus on making the ending bigger to ensure it is not weak like part 1. And B) Not kill off the hottest woman in the movie. Kelly Brook is stunning, it sucked to see her get eaten alive. Hopefully they bring her back as her twin sister coming to avenge her death…
And with that, I think I have analyzed Piranha 3D far more than I should have…
They just might. Patrick and Marcus pulled that same gag in the Feast series.
Memo to God: Please don’t call me home till I’ve seen this! I absolutely loved Piranha 3D! Biggest fun I’ve had in a cinema in ages and the post-production 3D works a treat because the makers set up enough depth cues when they made it. So what do I want in the new one? Well, bigger and meaner and more piranhas, of course. They should also be able to fly. And change shape. And be invisible and able to go on land. With loads of bikini-clad babes on the menu. Eli Roth getting squished again would also be good. Or Tarantino. Bring it on! Four weeks to nail the script? Easy!
Totally agree – most fun I’ve had in the cinema all year. Bring on this sequel immediately!
P3D SUCKED. It wasn’t even so-bad-it’s-good… it was just awful. No fun. Can’t believe I spent $17 for that crap. And yeah, the 3D was terrible – I couldn’t tell what the heck was going on, it was so dark. Pointless to be 3D. I say cast all new folks, make it 2D, and write a FUN script. Hope the FEAST gang can do it.
it was a really good movie (not storywise)and the 3D was just fine in my opinion i really enjoyed all the blood and gore especially when that chick split in half i was laughing so hard my sides hurt
how about 3D AND fun?
Melton & Dunstan, they are working CONSTANTLY… best horror writers in town… their new script MONSTROPOLIS was one of the best action horror franchise scripts I’ve read in years… it’s gonna sell for sure.
sounds like a really great project with classy elements. not.
Yeah for John Gulager. He seems like a good guy and had quite a struggle to get where he is. Even with a famous dad.
Piranha 3D has made no profit and will see very little profit after they get the DVD.Blu Ray sales. This is yet another reason why Dimension Films is going under very fast.
At least they’re no longer releasing pseudo-arthouse movies.
Idiot, it made 30 m profit with some countries still to open, plus it will make a killing on bluray, so it more than justifies the news of a sequel.
Bring it on, Piranha was awesome. I saw it in 2d and loved it…cos fuck 3d.
Ummm actually, dummy, it made a hell of a lot, AND the blu ray and dvd will make more. Also Dimension isnt going under. so in essence, STFU
Melton and Dunstan are great writers and they’re funny as hell. They are true professionals who are an absolute pleasure to work with and some of the best pitchers around. Piranha 3d was a ton of fun, it’s too bad middle America doesn’t get camp.
The parable of the low budget director:
I heard a story once from a guy who spent some time with a hunter-gatherer tribe in Brazil. Walking through the vast forest in search of game, they had to wade across a small stream. This they did without any break in their pace. Halfway across the stream my friend felt a stabbing pain in his foot. He leapt to the far bank, yelling,”Something bit me!” Without turning to look or slowing down, the man ahead of him said matter-of-factly, “Piranha.” Astounded, he demanded,”Why didn’t you warn me?” Now he noticed that all the men who had crossed ahead of him were bleeding from their feet. “You had to cross,”was the only answer.
Congratulations to Gulager, Dunstan and Melton. Their touch will be perfect for Piranha.
This is Awesome news! I’m excited to see Gulager does and have my fingers crossed for some FEAST cameos! Go CLU!
I enjoy watching this, a little bit suspense, sexy and scary but highly recommended.
There’s nonsuch thing as “REAL 3D” in movies. Well, besides live theater. Everything else is an artifice created by tricking your brain. It’s called stereography, and whether you shoot with twin cameras, render with twin cameras in a 3D CGI environment or post-convert to stereo you’re going to run into most of the same issues. It’s dark or blurry because the theater wasn’t set up right. You see too much or too little depth depending on issues out of the filmmaker’s hands like how far apart your eyes are. And a cheapo a rush job
(to finish that thought) …will look crappy no matter how it’s created. If you don’t shoot it just right with the twin rig then you’re stuck with the depth you have (it can’t easily be changed) and the CG fish won’t align well.
It really is sad when agents have to anonymously jock their own writers. Only at APA!
are u going to make another movie with the same characters that movie is awsome.
