EXCLUSIVE: Writer-producer Donald Todd, co-creator/executive producer/showrunner of the ABC comedy Samantha Who?, has set up 2 new projects at CBS — comedy Zits and drama True Detectives.
Both are based on well-known properties — Zits is a popular comic strip and Jonathan True Detectives is a best selling novel from Jonathan Kellerman. Both projects stem from Todd’s multi-script deal with Warner Bros TV, which co-produces Zits and True Detectives with studio-based Jerry Bruckheimer TV and Shephard/Robin Co., respectively. Zits is a live-action family comedy based on the comic strip that explores the sardonic wit and hormonal angst of 16-year-old Jeremy Duncan.
Created by cartoonists Jim Borgman and Jerry Scott and distributed by King Features Syndicate to more than 1,600 newspapers in 45 countries, the comic strip has an estimated daily readership of more than 200 million. In addition to writing, Todd is executive producing Zits with Bruckheimer, Jonathan Littman, Scott and
Borgman. KristieAnne Reed serves as co-executive producer. Zits marks a rare comedy effort by procedural drama-centric Bruckheimer TV, which has been looking to break into the half-hour genre.
True Detectives is based on Kellerman’s novel, which debuted at No.1 on the New York Times Bestseller list last year. It centers on 2 estranged half-brothers, one a homicide cop and the other a private eye, solving crimes in Los Angeles. Todd, repped by the Rothman Brecher Agency, is executive producing the project with Greer Shephard, Michael Robin, David Salzman and Kellerman.

Never worked with Don Todd, but I’ve heard he’s a nice guy. Still, he’s had an awful lot of chances. Best of luck with these.
The best writer in television. Good for him.
Zits is hilarious. I hope it translates to television. As for True Detectives, you forgot one of the bigger aspects of the relationship is one brother is black, the other white.
I never understood why there hasn’t been more Kellerman adaptations? Alex Delaware is a great character, and other than Ted Danson doing one in the 80′s, they haven’t brought him to life.
Yes, it seems that “True Detectives” would be hard to make work as a regular series. The fact that the cop and the detective would have to have cases that intersect every week would stretch credibilty. Perhaps the show would focus on one of the characters each week…
Zits, Family Circus….
Eventually, there will be a show/movie centered around the Cathy comic strip (that has been retired)-or was that already covered in Sex in the City? If the Boondocks can be on Adult Swim, then hello Lifetime/Oxygen/We….
How would a “Zits” TV series be any different from the many, many other teenage comedies already out there? The two main things it had going for it in the funny pages is that (A) a comic from a teenager’s perspective was still more or less unique, and (B) unlike most comic strips running at the time, it was actually funny.
Awesome! I’m so proud of him! He is definitely one of the best writers in Hollywood! I’m sure whatever is cooking up in that mind of his, it’ll turn out great!
