The BBC said this morning that the upcoming Season 6 of its flagship drama Doctor Who will open with a two-parter set and partly filmed in the U.S. It was written by Doctor Who head writer and showrunner Steven Moffat. The two-episode season opener will be co-produced by BBC America, with key scenes being filmed in Utah in November. The story is set in the late ‘60s and finds the Doctor (Matt Smith), Amy (Karen Gillan) and Rory (Arthur Darvill) on a secret mission “that takes them on an adventure from the desert in Utah – right to the Oval Office.” In the U.S., the trio of Dr. Who actors will be joined by Alex Kingston who reprises her role as River Song. “The Doctor has visited every weird and wonderful planet you can imagine, so he was bound get round to America eventually,” Moffat said. “And of course every Doctor Who fan will be jumping up and down and saying he’s been in America before. But not for real, not on location – and not with a story like this one! Oh, you wait!” Season 6 will follow a Christmas special guest starring Katherine Jenkins and Michael Gambon and will air on BBC America in 2 blocks, one in spring 2011 and one in the fall. Dr. Who‘s trip to the U.S. follows its spinoff Torchwood‘s permanent move to Hollywood as part of the deal between BBC and Starz.

Been a fan since I was a kid. Love this show. Makes me jealous enough to wish we Americans could write for it, as well.
Actually American Jane Espenson (Buffy, House, Warehouse 13, Caprica) will be doing some writing for Torchwood and they’ve been known to share writers so I would think that eventually if any American was to write for Dr. Who she’d be a shoe in.
This is great news! Yeah, in the grand scheme of things this is probably a big “so-what?” to most, but as a longtime fan of the series I think it’s a cool developement.
Awesome news, but FYI, it’s not “Dr. Who” – it’s “Doctor Who”.
Wasn’t the notorious TV movie for FOX back in the 1990′s shot in the states? (And yes, it counts).
I believe that was filmed in Canada.
Yep, the 1996 TV movie was shot in Vancouver. I believe even the establishing shots of San Francisco were stock footage.
Holy crap. I’m so there!
Way back when, I had hoped that there would be film featuring The Doctor and Captain Kirk and his crew.
In this case, I think that it would be great if there were a few episodes featuring The Doctor and Bill Henrickson and his Big Lovefamily.
I just started watching the “new” show on Netflix and then the Matt Smith one (whom I think is fantastic and might just be my favorite). I just hope this doesn’t become a precursor to an American version of the show like what they attempted in the 90s, as an American I can safely say this is a distinctly British show that I do not want to see any attempt at all of having it “Americanized”…I shudder at the thought of a Doctor without a British accent.
That would be the worst thing….Doctor who is British and itcan never be american..EVER! that would be the end of the series
Actually he’s Gallifreyan which is another planet, but yeah I don’t think we’ll see a Dr. Who with an American accent anytime soon (nor would I want one I think it would be too weird).
It’s been pretty much established that their homeworld accent is roughly the same as sort of regionless British accent common around the Suburban cities near London, but not as clipped as a real London accent. I believe there was one version of ‘The Master’ that faked an American accent (was actually and American actor faking a Brit one at the end) to hide out in San Francisco – but was SO obviously filmed in Canada.
This site has some good links to different UK accents if you have trouble picking them out.
Actually some actors are very good at doing accents (Kevin Kline and Kim Cattrall come to my mind) but yeah if you can’t do it properly best not to take those jobs that require it I think.
I wish I could get behind this series…
But those damn Brits have a hard time making anything other than comedy.
Prime Suspect, Upstairs/Downstairs, Wallander, Cracker, numerous Masterpiece Theater productions, Edge of Darkness, Bleak House, Spooks, Being Human, Life on Mars, Ashes to Ashes…wait, what was that about Brits having a hard time making anything other than comedy?
Yeah, those are all the series I gave a couple eps and deleted off the tivo… Being Human belongs on SyFy with the rest of their MUST SKIP TV.
I sincerely hope you didn’t watch a couple episodes of Ashes to Ashes yet. The first show spoiled the ending of Life On Mars. Anyway, watch all 5 seasons of Life On Mars and A2A. It’s not hard to do, there’s only 8 episodes per season. Philip Glenister is a force of nature. The development of that character alone, especially in the last 8 shows, is worth your time.

Pennies from Heaven.
The Singing Detective.

cool always wondered what doctor who would be like if the doctor landed the tardis in the u.s plus river song involved maybe the story contains clues to who she really is besides why the doctor and rory and amy are running around the u.s
The Doctor, as Moffat pointed out, has landed in the US before. Daleks in Manhattan springs to mind right away. Dalek was set at a private underground base in Utah, IIRC.
I think you’re definitely on to something with us finding out more on River Song. Will we learn about the man she killed?
Well, yes AND no.
This, I think, will be the first time The Doctor and his companions actually film in the USA. With “Daleks in Manhattan,” I believe, they only sent a small production unit to pick up some shots that they then CGI’ed the actors into.
As for the Doctor having any sort of adventure in the U.S., that goes back to the first Doctor (William Hartnell) and the 1966 adventure “The Gunfighters.”
Maybe the Doctor can fight the Neocon Republicans. They’re just like Daleks, spreading thru the universe destroying shit.
Wow, dragging your partisan politics into a Doctor Who thread. Obsess over politics much?
My thoughts exactly. Wiping out Nixon and his evil Republican minions in the late 1960s would have prevented the mess we are currently in from ever happening.
“And of course every Doctor Who fan will be jumping up and down and saying he’s been in America before.”
Yes, The Doctor landed in Utah most recently in a 2005 episode, but it was shot on a soundstage in Wales. So I believe Moffat is correct that no episode has ever physically been filmed in the US.
Y’know, that sort of explains Joe the Plumber.
I’m pleased that the hilariously nonlinear River Song is going to be part of this US-set storyline. I’ve always considered River Song to be partly a bitchslap at the showrunners of ER for wasting Alex Kingston’s formidable talents in her last three seasons on that show.

With regards to Doctor Who episodes shot in the U.S., while I understand the bulk of the episode was shot in the U.K., was the opening gambit for “Daleks of New York” an FX shot, or was it shot at the Statue of Liberty?
