Sony Pictures just confirmed Emma Stone for the female lead in Spider-Man. The surprise? While days ago both the studio and her reps expected her to take the role of Mary Jane Watson, she has instead closed to play Gwen Stacy, Peter Parker’s first love. Here’s the studio release:
CULVER CITY, Calif., October 5, 2010 – Emma Stone has been cast as the female lead in the upcoming Spider-Man film from Columbia Pictures and Marvel Studios, it was announced today by Amy Pascal, co-chairman of Sony Pictures Entertainment and Matt Tolmach, president of Columbia Pictures. Stone has been tapped for the role of Gwen Stacy opposite Andrew Garfield as Peter Parker. The film, to be directed by Marc Webb from a screenplay by James Vanderbilt and produced by Avi Arad and Laura Ziskin, will begin production in December and will be released in theaters nationwide in 3D on July 3, 2012. The casting continues an association between Sony Pictures Entertainment and the actress, who previously starred in Superbad, The House Bunny, and Zombieland, all for Columbia Pictures; she may currently be seen in Screen Gems’ hit comedy Easy A, and takes a cameo role in Screen Gems’ upcoming Friends with Benefits.
Commenting on the announcement, Tolmach said, “It’s been an incredible journey for us to watch Emma’s star rise as an actress. She is extraordinarily talented and has a very special on-screen spark that is perfect for this role. Given her history with the studio, casting her in one of our most important franchises is a real thrill.”
Webb added, “The chemistry between Andrew and Emma was stunning and made Emma the clear choice. At the heart of the story of Peter Parker is not only the amazing Spider-Man, but also an ordinary teenager who is wondering what he has to do to get the girl. Andrew and Emma will bring everything audiences expect to these roles, but also make them their own. Much to my surprise, it was fun to find out that our choice for Gwen (Emma) is also a natural blonde.”
Emma Stone can currently be seen starring in Screen Gems’ hit comedy Easy A. Next year, she will star in Warner Bros.’ Crazy, Stupid, Love opposite Steve Carell and Ryan Gosling and in The Help, the adaptation of Kathryn Stockett’s bestselling novel; she also takes a cameo role in Screen Gems’ Friends with Benefits and will voice a role in DreamWorks Animation’s comedy The Croods. Stone’s recent credits include Paperman, Zombieland, Ghosts of Girlfriends Past, The House Bunny, The Rocker, and Superbad.

This is the dumbest thing I’ve ever heard. What a waste of her natural MJ personality.
Wow, as Gwen Stacy? random. I’m very surprised with this one, and very unsure about this whole reboot still. I don’t think there’s anything that can make me be interested at this point.
Stone as MJ I could kind of get behind. Stone as Gwen seems like a misfire to me. Don’t care how talented she is, she doesn’t come across like a Gwen Stacy in the least.
Does this mean they are dropping MJ from the story, though? That I would be okay with.
WTF? Emma would be PERFECT as MJ, why are they once again putting the redhead in the blonde role? Emma is just all around better suited in personality and looks as MJ, not Gwen. Stupid, stupid, stupid!
Read the article! Emma is a natural blonde!
The point still stands that they cast someone known for being a redhead as a character known for being a blond. For the second time in a row after Bryce Dallas Howard. It’s odd.
Smart move for Stone to switch to Gwen Stacey from MJ. Sounds like Stacey is a bigger role in this film, with MJ’s character coming on in subsequent films. Who is to say they’ll even make follow ups, especially if the film performs like Spider-Man 4, not a reboot.
LOL. I guess Emma Stone is going to dye her hair back to her natural blonde… This news made me laugh out loud really. I like Ms. Stone, but I wasn’t expecting this switch… Also, I guess this leaves hope they cast Deborah Ann Woll from “True Blood” as MJ since she actually looks closer to the comic book depiction of MJ.
surprised she switched to gwen means not only will she have to dye her hair blonde but also looks like sadly fans will wind up seeing some one thrown off a bridge on screen.
Okay so they cast the actress who’s the least like Gwen out of the lot?
Clever.
I could never see Emma Stone as Gwen in a million years, she doesn’t have a patch on Bryce Dallas Howard.
Did you see Spider-Man 3? Bryce Dallas Howard may have had the perfect look, but she was terrible as Gwen Stacy.
What does it matter if the actress is the ‘least like’ a character? They’re actors – they act.
She may be a real blonde, but she has been a redhead for as long as she’s been in movies and that’s the way she is seen by the general moviegoing public. Marilyn Monroe wasn’t a natural blonde, either, btw…
Stone’s sultry, sexy voice and personality is much better suited for MJ. I was excited for that casting news, not this…
That’s the intelligent choice. She does not fit the looks of a supermodel. However, she does fit Gwen Stacy perfectly.
This franchise is hungry for greatness. This is the time to rebuild the franchise. They should utilise the villains that weren’t included in the previous films such as Beetle (Abner Jenkins), Carnage, Chameleon, Electro, Enforcers, Hammerhead, Hobgoblin, Hydro-Man, Jackal, Kingpin, Kraven the Hunter, Lizard, Morbius, Mysterio, Rhino, Scorpion, Shocker, Silvermane, Spot, Tinkerer, Tombstone, Vulture.
Mary-Jane Watson has been a love interest in every Spider-Man film. That must change. They should include the following love interests and leave Mary-Jane Watson out of the films for at least a while:
Liz Allan, Betty Brant, Gwen Stacy, Debra Whitman, April Maye, Michele Gonzales, Jean DeWolff, Jessica Drew, Lisa Skye, Marcy Kane, Angelica Jones, Felicia Hardy, Sarah Rushman, Carlie Cooper, Norah Winters.
This is a second chance to get it right. This is an opportunity.
woah you are a total comic geek. michelle the new roommate!?! please all the characters created in the brand new day phase of spidey should be killed off.
Oh for God’s sake this mantra/whining about redhair and sexy looks, this nerdy die hard fundamentalist attachment to the old comics like it’s the Bible -Jesus! Can you all just give it a rest? Straying from the comics didn’t hurt the Batman, Superman franchise-they were fun movies-it’s just a movie not a time capsule! It’s a friggin comic book! It’s needed updating for a while now-thank God they are trying to breath life into a geriatric franchise. Changing the color of Gwen’s hair will hardly ruin the experience. Don’t be so chronically negative ya’ll-give it a chance. Many of you sound like a bunch of teenage girls gossiping in the hall. Just shut the *#ck up and read a book while they make the movie. Then give it a thumbs up or down.
i am excited to see what marc webb does with the spidey franchise. i think he could really make it something special!
She would have been perfect as MJ! And Gwen dies which means we won’t get Emma Stone for very long, NOOOOOOOOOO!
The studio’s are out of their mind. This girl is not big enough for Spider-Man. Superbad and Easy A are both teen comedies and she has the manliest voice ever and she’s not hot enough for effing Spider-Man. Just fuck this retarded movie. Bad idea to remake and even worse casting. Andrew Garfield is tall, skinny and doesn’t even look like a high schooler let alone Peter Parker. I just LOATHE this film already.
Calm down. First of all, its not a ‘remake’. Secondly, you don’t have to be ‘big’ to play a comic book character. In fact the less known you are the better.
Why don’t the actually hot girls get the roles?
Everyone who keeps talking about MJ listen…the movie took great liberties. Peter Parker was NOT hooked up with Mary Jane in the comics until he’d been around for years and years. He married her not when he was teenage spiderman as he always is in the movies…but rather in his 30′s! Mary Jane being in this film in any capacity other than perhaps a young cameo is retarded. And this article is wrong…Gwen Stacey is not Peter Parker’s first love. Anyone who knows even the least bit about the Spiderman comic book knows that in his teen years he was all in love with Betty Brant. For years. Betty WAS in the previous spiderman films and had the job she was supposed to have (same place Peter works), but she only had a few seconds…just a cameo. Very backwards. One of the reasons Spiderman has always been so enjoyable is he is the anti-hero. He’s the guy who’s down on his luck and CAN’T get the girl. Not until he’s much older. The previous spiderman installments decided to make him like that for about 2 seconds and by the end of the film he triumphantly marches away from MJ who’s just dying to be with him. They also made him all muscular overnight (never happened). Drawings of Spiderman in his younger years showed him incredibly puny (the adjective everyone used to describe him). And those webs he shoots…yeah, he designs them, not has them as a mutation. I won’t even start on the green goblin who bore right next to no resemblance to the real green goblin (spiderman’s nemesis). The green iron man was…well it was just sad. Or the almost silent Venom? A giant growling Sandman? What’s wrong with people?? The actual characters are amazing but I guess we need catatonic boneheads to surround the hero. I like Emma Stone…her being blonde is good. She doesn’t look like Gwen, but Michael Keaton didn’t look like Batman and did a killer job. I do wish they’d pick people who look the part…I really do. Mary Jane is actually horribly boring in the comics, in direct contrast with Betty Brant and especially Gwen Stacey. Gwen is easily the most likable character. Switching to Gwen was smart. I think nearly everyone posting here seems to only know of Spiderman through those few films. They weren’t accurate. Quit focusing on MJ. She’s irrelevant for many many years and doesn’t hold a candle to Peter’s early crushes.
Stone would have been terrific as MJ. Sony once again showing they have no clue what they’re doing with this role.
And while I understand non-comic book people like to throw stones at “the geeks” when they start talking about things like characters’ hair, in this instance it’s completely valid.
Stone is known for being a redhead. MJ is a famous comic book red head. Now she’s playing a character that is known for being a platinum blonde. If Stone keeps her red hair, a lot of people will think she’s playing MJ. If she doesn’t, people aren’t going to recognize her.
It sounds ridiculous — because it is! I don’t get it.
Mary Jane did not even meet Peter until Spiderman had been written for 3 and a half years. Peter proposed to her 15 years and 2 months into the Spiderman story. She declined saying she wasn’t the kind of girl who could be happy with just one man. She then vanished from the comics for quite a long time while Peter dated various women. 5 years later (one month short of to be technical), the writers brought her back. 4 years after THAT, they finally married. That’s right…24 years later. SHOULD Mary Jane be in this movie? Sure…but only as a very minor character with limited interaction. She had a tendency to date jerks and was an international supermodel. Originally drawn with some horrible 80′s curls. I’m telling you…in the comics MJ just sucks and these movies are not basing Spiderman on the previous films, but obviously on the comics. Gwen is a MAJOR character. MJ is not. Not until there is a significantly older Spiderman where pretty much nothing you know is the same.

and then they were married for TWENTY YEARS. what is with the mj haters?
Sounds like they’ll do the green goblin storyline over again and stay more faithful the gwen story from the comics… Raimi’s Spiderman introduced MJ too soon and Gwen way too late. Spiderman 3 was BAD. I’d rather they do a faithful version of the classic Spidey comics than Ultimate Spiderman.
haha i thought peter parker was a nerd who couldnt talk to women before mj???
now he’s pimping
