UPDATE From Nikki Finke: “Dick has been unhappy for a while,” one source is telling me as the reason behind Dick Wolf leaving UTA, his agency of 11 years. (Deadline TV Editor Nellie Andreeva broke the news today. See below.) Wolf was close with Peter Benedek and had a friendship with Tracey Jacobs there. But in the end, when it comes to Wolf, it’s all about network series, and “he was frustrated and nervous,” one of my sources explains, which says more about Wolf as a producer after all his success than about UTA’s ability as an agency.
“More than anything, he was always frustrated that he couldn’t get any non-Law & Order show on the air in recent years and that he couldn’t build a franchise outside. And he was very frustrated that NBC didn’t give Law & Order classic another year so it could become the longest running American drama series of all time [instead of tied with Gunsmoke]. He’s also worried: he sees
that Criminal Intent is in its last cycle next year, that LOLA is not coming out of the gate like gangbusters, and that SVU is fading so that if NBC wasn’t in such terrible straits it wouldn’t even last another 2-3 years even though Dick is the master of stretching those. Look, you know the man, he’s a very vibrant, virile, alpha male-type guy. I’m sure he wanted UTA to shake some nuts off the tree and get more stuff going for him.”
So where will Wolf go? This gets interesting because Wolf “likes to be friends with his agents,” I’m told. He’s a Santa Barbara neighbor of WME’s Rick Rosen and the two are good friends. He’s also good friends with ICM’s Chris Silbermann and Ted Chervin and took a business status meeting with them recently. He used to be repped by CAA’s Chris Harbert alongside Benedek when the TV packaging agent was at UTA. When Harbert jumped to CAA, the agency world was surprised that Wolf didn’t follow and instead stayed loyal to Benedek and UTA even though CAA went after him incredibly hard. CAA even did an Entourage-like Powerpoint presentation for Wolf, and I hear the last scene featured Dick in the cockpit of a Gulfstream 5 while the jet engines spewed $100 bills.
EXCLUSIVE 4:45 PM: From Nellie Andreeva, Deadline TV Editor:
Talk about a shocker. There’s big news in the TV agency world — Law & Order creator Dick Wolf has just left UTA where he had been a client of owner/founder Peter Benedek’s since 1999 and more recently of Tracey Jacob’s (who also reps L&O: Criminal Intent‘s Vincent D’Onofrio). Also, I hear that he has not signed yet with a new agency and it is not clear if he intends to do so right away. ”We are honored to have called Dick a client for more than a decade, and we are proud of our long relationship which has resulted in some of the best television series ever to air,” the UTA partners said in a joint statement. “We wish Dick the very best.”
Two decades after the launch of his original Law & Order series, Wolf remains one of the top earners in television with a very lucrative deal at NBC Universal for his Wolf Films. But at the same time, Wolf is known as an extremely hard-nosed businessman and hard-to-handle personality. Right now, he has three Law & Order series on the air: Law & Order: SVU and Law & Order: Los Angeles on NBC and Law & Order: Criminal Intent on USA; British offshoot Law & Order: UK, on which he also serves as an executive producer; as well as a pilot order at USA. But he lost the original Law & Order on NBC last spring (and a deal for TNT to take it over didn’t work out) and the negotiation for Criminal Intent was long and arduous before its recent renewal. ”I wish UTA the best going forward and I just want to take this opportunity to specifically thank Peter Benedek and Tracey Jacobs for their longtime help, thoughtfulness and advice,” Wolf said.

Hmmmnnn … I’m sure there’s a “big reason” behind Dick’s departure. I guess we will have to wait to see how the story unfolds.
So weird, was just thinking this might happen last night. Guess I’m still right more often than not.
It must be awesome to be in a position to fire an agency like UTA. Every rejected screenwriter’s dream.
Must be more than meets the eye here. Cue opening music – “dum dum”
UTA has been devoted to every waking creative move for this man. They helped build him and keep him in place. What happened?
Maybe he should retire and focus on giving his money away.
As long as Wolf’s leaving doesn’t effect “SVU”, I’m okay-ish.
His USA pilot is rumored to be “Law & Order: Miami” – good luck with that.
Wolf leaves UTA… well.
I only care what Tracy Jordan has to say about this.
Dick’s feeling “nervous” because he’s a fraud and always has been…
Will the other agency’s vow to protect his veil, yes.
Will they succeed, no. They’re the ones responsible for piercing it in the first place.
Dick is gone, but his package(s) remains.
No, not that package you pervert.
I don’t know why anyone in TV wouldn’t want to be at WME. They’re like kingmakers. They take writers and make them kings. Except for the “Black Hole” empress over there, they’re basically like an all-star league.
Yes, the all-star signs you and then you never hear from them again and are instead working with the Muppet Babies. Some of whom are very good, but still, it’s a little bit bait and switch.
They won’t let their writers develop with anyone but WME producers or pods: all about the packaging fees, baby, at the expense of their clients’ careers.
It was a reference to people like Josh Schwartz and Seth MacFarlane. Talented writers but can’t you attribute that they were able to keep growing and not be held back to their agents positioning them.
It’s not really a shocker. He had been shaky there. It’s not an agency that’s great at putting together a smart, efficient team that can work well together and support an important business like Wolf’s. A lot of clients are lost due to dysfunction, lack of communication or a refusal to be team players. A lot of talented people, who don’t play well with each other.
UTA ‘s biggest problem and biggest strength across the boards is that they don’t package, they don’t put deals within their office together. They are not there to allow smaller clients to serve the needs of bigger clients.
They try to serve the needs of each individual client.
Old fashioned but it has worked well for writers and actors. Directors need material brought to them as they are less self starters.
Know that at CAA you are there to fill the packaging needs of that company. They are not going to serve your career. WME is a lot like CAA when it was shiny and new. Neither places are terribly nice but deeply efficient and out for domination. I was on a call with Ari E. this week for a directing client and he had split focus at best, chewed out an employee, screamed at another employee while we reviewed the numbers in a deal. It is challenging to do business with WME because they spend more time stealing clients than representing well the ones they have.
That said UTA should take a small note from them and be more fraternal with their clients in their own world.
NBC is the problem not UTA.
Wolf can go hang in Rick Rosens kitchen but the fact is no new agency will change that fact.
He should help the world with his boat loads of money and write a movie.
NBC is a now an incompetent network but they made Dick Wolf 100′s of millions. He should relax. He’s very lucky to have been so successful with so little creative talent. He’s done good.
perhaps law and order would have been the longest running series ever and not an also ran if Dick had cut his producer fee from $350K per episode…
LOLA doesnt work because NY is the major character in all law and Order Shows…now its just another badly cast cop show…
Boo, hoo.. Our little Dick is not happy. Would you like a looly pop ? It’s us the viewing public that is not happy. He has polluted the TV airwaves for 20 years with multiple shows about crime ( oh yeah, I forgot, it’s about the justice system) what a bunch of crap. He should be happy for the amazing ride he has had. It’s because of him we have to endure all of the Bruckheimer CSI crap. The again, give the public what they want. What a sad commentary that between wolf and Bruckheimer they control and foul so much of the airwaves. Go ahead you cry baby, go to another agency. Hope that have a box of tissues for all of your bloody issues
A….MEN! This guy’s filth can only be tolerated for so long. How long did he think NBC could shove Law and Order down people’s throats. So we got Chuck Lorre on Comedy and Dick Wolfe and Jerry Bruckheimer on drama. Where do I “sign up”.
Peter Benedek is the most classy, intelligent agent in this cesspool of a business and Dick Wolf will soon find that out money or not.
That note about CAA is priceless. If it’s true, someone please, please get a hold of that powerpoint. I’d like to see it here.
Given how angry Dick is, how often he screams and complains at NBC, it is really not amazing that he is in the position that he is. The Main Law and Order didnt get picked up because Jeff Zucker and Jeff Gaspin had had enough with Dick, his attitude, his threats, and all his tactics. They couldnt stomach doing a favor for someone who had treated them so poorly throughout the years. Its pretty simple. Treat people poorly (like they are morons) and they will get their moment in time. Well they did. Canceling Law and Order was Jeff Zuckers exit gift to Dick. As for UTA, you gotta blame someone for your failure – so why not blame your two good friends. Thats hollywood!!!
The new L&O:LA has music videos!! Nothing could be more desperate. One season and out.
It could be a great show if they hired some writers with muscle and sat down and really figured out the world and the characters. No time was spent crafting this. It has tremendous potential.
Dick Wolf needs to hire ten of the best and brightest on a weekly and along with the hired staff take them to Santa Barbara for one week. They talk day and night and figure out the direction of the show. They look at their mistakes. They look at what is working.
The staff goes back to work and the writing improves 100%. Dick can pay out of his own pocket. And it will be worth every dime.
You have a bullet proof premise and a talented cast. Be a leader, do you job as Dick Wolf instead of whining and switching agents. If you can’t make LOLA a hit it is your fault.
Get it together man.
What LOLA needs to do is explore the L.A. that no one knows. I mean, for God’s sake, their pilot episode was a show business episode. You can’t get more lame and on the head than that.
“Bullet proof premise”? Are you serious? LOLA is subpar at best. LONY didn’t dwell on its characters’ personal issues the way this one does. For example, Jerry Ohrbach’s battle with alcohol would be brought up but only in the context of the particular investigation. And the cases didn’t just focus on showbiz types, but New Yorkers across the spectrum which gave it a powerful punch. Now the irony of course that as we in LA fully know, many of the homicide detectives really do dress well and look like agents themselves. But that could be the great juxtaposition between the perps/witnesses and the cops. But no, instead we get inside showbiz crap. Maybe, just maybe Wolf needs a major reassessment of his own. I agree with the poster above, show us you got what it takes Dick and write a kickass movie.
Dick, the luckiest man in Network television Wolf, is a sub-mediocre talent at best and that’s why he’s nervous. He had little to do w/ L&O the first 2-3 years (which were the best) and alienated a huge list of people who put him up there while he was busy producing drivel like Mann and Machine, HELP, Nasty Boys etc. Brilliant at taking credit for others’ ideas, and many many people know it. Now DW is awfully scared that people will notice it’s “a very small man behind the curtain…” Should be ecstatic he’s had such a long and fraudulent run at all…
No matter what you think of Dick this is a big loss for UTA. While they may be a decent agency they don’t seem the have the ability to create new revenue streams for their clients. They’ve represented Dick well in TV for many years, but what else have they built for him…? Tyler Perry has a bigger and better business as he’s in so many different areas. Dick should do the same.
He will go back to Harbert.
Harbert was the only agent that actually grew his business. It had been like ten years since Dick had written a pilot when Harbert convinced him to write and create SVU as a spin off.
Chris Harbert can do all the powerpoint presentations he wants. He will ALWAYS be known as THE MAYOR. “The Mayor of Stupidville.” If Dick goes with him I’m sure he’ll be VERY happy. NOT.
sweet “not” joke bro. CLASSIC
It’s ur agency’s fault that U can’t get any other kind of show on the air? Pahleez… Take ur ubermillions and yacht around the Med.
