In the latest salvo in Fox and Cablevision’s nasty carriage dispute that has led to the network’s blackout in 3 million Cablevision homes, Fox today served Cablevision with a cease and desist letter for what it described as “encouraging theft of copyrighted material.” Fox’s demand stems from news reports that Cablevision has allegedly directed subscribers to illegal websites to view Fox shows as well as NFL games and Major League Baseball playoffs. “Copyright law exists to protect the very creative freedoms that fuel our industry,” Fox said in a statement. “As both a creator and owner of intellectual property – not to mention major sports franchises — Cablevision knows better and should immediately call an end to this unlawful activity.”

Who needs Fox and their crappy shows anyway? I’ll PAY my cable provider to DROP Fox!
I could take Fox more seriously about defending intellectual property rights if they didn’t feature a show that encourages their violation (to the tune of millions of dollars’ worth of infringements weekly), namely, GLEE.
What are you talking about? License agreements are entered into for the songs on Glee.
this is close to absurd. They certainly pay licenses for the songs performed on the show. So, you must be trying to imply (using your songwriting skills) that they are encouraging people to sing along at home with the show and that each home where this goes on needs to have a public performance license and pay for syncronization? Or is it that merely trying to show the “fun” in singing is somehow an infringement?
You post is interesting; can you be more specific in your claims?
Fox a creator of intellectual property? Since when did corporations becomes creators?
By law, they own the intellectual fruits of their employees, absent any explicit agreement to the contrary. And, corporations are actually just amalgamations of individuals, some of whom are creators. I won’t go so far as to say that the corporation should get writing/directing credit.
Welcome to Rupert’s World…Fox’s best reality show of them all!!!!
Look at what we pay for cable and then ask yourself who has corporate greed? I am switching to FIOS
I am disgusted by anybody who condemns “corporate greed.” I hereby define it as the necessary desire for betterment that drives every successful entrepreneur. I hereby invite every reader to quit his/her present job and go get hired for the next job by some guy with no drive. Not happening. So-called “corporate greed” is the engine that drives every successful business. Condemn it if you must; then get “BOZO” tatooed on your forehead.

Does Fox think their network is the only place to find out the scores of NFL and MLB games? We can get that info legally (and even watch the games) on their respective websites.
That being said, does FOX expect sports fans to sit quietly by and not try to get the game when its not available on their own channel?
Exactly. And just what is Cablevision expected to do? Sit idly by and do nothing while half its subscriber base drops its service and go belly-up?
Of course not! They’re going to fight tooth and nail to keep their customers complacent while this dispute plays out. If I were the provider, I would not budge until the FCC steps in and does something about this.
I suspect it becomes more difficult for FOX to pay its overhead and maintain profits when its film division donates tens of millions of dollars to things like James Cameron’s environmental fund.
ROSEBUD!!!
if they keep this up Fox News will have Terrorist Monkeys with machine guns and LAPD cops with their jet packs attack Cablevision with explosive Anchor Babies!
Wasn’t until Fox cut their channels from Dish that I actually began to seek shows out online.
It’s actually very easy. No downloading or anything. So, I’d like to thank Fox for helping me to screw them over. I never would have done it without you!
And while you are at it, get on a plane with the youngest most ambitious pilots (oh yes and most overworked and underpaid). Get some surgery done by the most profitable hospital. Eat some fiscally responsible sushi. While we are at it, we need some tort reform so companies can build cheaper cars and baby seats and pacemakers.
Cable companies have had their monopolies for way too long, and now it’s coming back to bite them.
I switched to DirecTV because Time-Warner Cable ignored the demand for the NFL Network. Eight of the nine houses on my cul-de-sac have either DirecTV or Dish Network.
As more areas get a choice for FiOS, U-Verse, Xfinity, or satellite, cable companies are going to have to start treating their customers like adults, or they’ll just walk.
How can you point to cable rates without seeing the irony of Fox’s demand of $150M to retrans broadcast programming. Look at the percentage that programming costs factor into those rates.
Love it. This is also probably a precursor to another future carriage issue with a different cable provider – Comcast (or is that Kabletown?). I can just see once the NBC deal is completed (which it shouldn’t be), Comcast will “suddenly” have carriage issues with all other OTA nets – FOX,CBS, and ABC.
Coincidence?
