Some 7.1 million viewers tuned into Fox News at 8 PM last night to watch the last trapped Chilean miner, Luis Urzua, making it safely to the surface. That was not only the cable news channel’s largest audience in the hour this year but its biggest viewership since Election Night 2008. It more than doubled what the channel’s flagship series, The O’Reilly Factor, averages at 8 PM. Fox News not only pummeled its entire cable competition, it also beat broadcast networks NBC and Fox in the 8 PM hour. CNN also got a boost with its rescue coverage vs. the miniscule ratings it has been getting in the 8 PM slot with new talkshow Parker Spitzer. The network averaged 2.7 million viewers. That was almost 10 times what the show hosted by former New York Democratic governor Eliot Spitzer and political columnist Kathleen Parker most recently logged at 8 PM but trailed Fox News by a wide margin in the area CNN used to dominate — breaking news. MSNBC (1.1 million) was on par with what Keith Olbermann normally delivers in the 8 PM hour. Overall, Fox News’ primetime average last night was 4.9 million viewers, followed by CNN (2.4 million) and MSNBC (920,000).
TV Editor Nellie Andreeva - tip her here.

Fox won because a) CNN strangely had Spitzer and Parker anchoring its coverage and they were ‘way over their heads and b) MSNBC also oddly stuck with Olbermann talking politics. I’m normally a CNN/MSNBC viewer (but always watching CNN during big breaking news) and even I switched to Fox. Cannot for the life of me understand why MSNBC didn’t switch to the rescue and dumbfounded that CNN was so desperate to score a handful of ratings points (Nielsen will give the 8-9pm CNN 2.7 rating to Parker-Spitzer’s overall numbers since CNN made sure it ran as the “regular” show including regular hosts) that it threw away its greatest strength.
Ummm…FOX News always wins in the ratings.
That’s because they are the BEST!!!!!
No BiGGieS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! OMG YESSSSS!!!!!
The problem with the mainstream news media is that they see EVERYTHING from an extremely liberal perspective. It is like asking a man with cataracts to paint an Snellen chart. He will try his best, but it will be skewed by his vision limitations.
This is why liberals are such revisionists when it comes to history, politics or even the news. People like Nancy Pelosi, Barack Obama, Barney Frank, Harry Reid and Keith Olbermann truly believe that they are “mainstream” and “moderate” — and anyone to the right of their views are “fanatical right-wing zealots.”
This is the driving force behind the far-left’s ridicule of pretty much ANYONE who disagrees with them. “Truth” is limited to personal perception — and they pride themselves on being intolerant to anyone who disagrees with their views because they think that they are right…and everyone else is wrong.
It is sad that it takes WAKE UP CALLS (like what is coming in November) to force them to realize just how outside of the mainstream that they truly are. As an ideologue, I seriously doubt that Obama will be able to move to the center on November 3rd. He will try to find some way to argue that liberals were the “real winners” in November.
Dime con quien andas, y te dire quien eres.
Very well said, thanks for the clarity.
tu lo dijiste!
very true. joy baher’s behavior on the view with bill o’reilly is a perfect example.
Nice analysis and very well stated.
Thank you! J.J.B – contributor – “Big Journalism”
I don’t knoiw who said it first but it is realy profound and I agree with it. A conservative believes it when he sees it… a Liberal sees it when he believas it.
You are correct, sir, except for your expections of a coming “Wake-Up Call” in November. Rather than be roused from their deluded dreams of a socialist mandate, the Left will instead double down on their narrative that average Americans lack the intelligence to vote for their own best interests. That is the Democrats rationale for misrepresenting their true ideology while they are in re-election mode.
You have got to be kidding. Fox News buries CNN and MSNBC every night of the week by sometimes 4 times the viewership. People with any regard for the truth, verified sources of news, and common sense don’t watch CNN and MSNBC anymore.
“People with any regard for the truth, verified sources of news, and common sense…”
Holy fucking shit, that’s probably the most hilarious thing I’ve read all week. Thanks for that bud. I see Deadline is still being linked from the Drudge Report.
awwww….poor thing…cant stand the truth huh..
Always having to bring the conversation down to gutter level. Typical liberal behavior.
Yeah, gutter language, man. Every time I try to reason with liberals on line I get called names or just get cussed out. That’s all they have.
“I see Deadline is still being linked from the Drudge Report.”
Yeah, and where did you come from – the “real” news site MSNBC? The great Maoist “Leap Forward” network? They don’t even pretend anymore that they’re doing “real” news.
Speaking of caves – When are you gonna crawl out of yours John Doe?
Liberals/Democrats always resort to cursing, insulting, patronizing, demeaning, and otherwise childish behavior when they encounter anything they disagree with.
How can say that with a straight face when republicans resort to the same tactics. Step back for a second and analyze what republicans do before you even decide to write about someone else. You won’t though and that is the problem and strength of republicans. The funny thing is everyone acts like this has not happened in politics before. Once power shifts in November it will shift again and again and again as it has for centuries. Fox News is bias. Of course what they report is true, but it is the way the argument is framed. That is why if you watch Fox News 99% of the time you are republican. And Fox News has no problem framing it how they want you to see it and they embrace that. Use your critical thinking skills for once in your life. So do sit there high and mighty thinking that you are correct. I can tell you that your child was misbehaving and hit johnny and never mention to you that johnny has been calling your son mean names and bullying him. Your perspective can change dramatically when you know both sides of the story.
Wow love the language. I suppose that helps to influence opinion.
I’ll bet my social studies teach will love it!!
Vulgar language. Typical liberal MSNBC viewer. I strongly advise you, if you have any intellectual honesty, to objectively watch FNC for two days. You will actually receive both sides of issues, not the totally leftist bias of MSNBC, which I must admit I have not watched for more than two years. I do understand that in recent times they have sunk even deeper into the pinko pit.
lol both sides from fox news, you’re such a jokester
Language !!!
“Holy fucking shit, that’s probably the most hilarious thing I’ve read all week.”
You watch MSNBC. So I seriously doubt it.
You better stick with MSNBC because Fox News is way over your head. Fox reports and you decide, meaning they report both sides of an issue and it’s up to the viewer to draw their own conclusions. MSNBC tells, correction distorts the news. I’d rather watch commercials on Fox than any of the so called in depth reporting on MSNBC.
Hahaha you can’t handle the fact that people like Fox so you get vulgar…. you are showing your true colors! I guess you still blame Bush for that. I hope you grow up some day
Step to the Head of the Classless, John Doe! Wowie, you’re right in step with the vice-president of the USA, the Classless, Clueless, Clown, Joe Biden!!!
Birds of a feather???
And it looks as though another “bird” is flocking toward the Coocoo’s Nest, too….. Sherry Nye wants to add her feather-weight opinion to yours….. Thanks, Sherry, it’s always nice to see things kept in the family-nest…..
Hey that’s great… Biden is CCC (clueless, classless clown)
Just like the CCC of the 1930′s where Dems prolonged the depression. I’m from the government and I’m here to help…!!!
The last refuge of the intellectually incompetent is still profanity, I see.
Everything is linked from Drudge. New York Times, Guardian, BBC, Reuters… everything. His focus is breaking news.
JohnDoe… on behalf of Jimmy Carter, I apologize for the creation of the Department of Education, which has dumbed down the educational system to the point where young lads like you can’t communicate without resorting to profanity to prove your non-existent point.
Again, we’re truly sorry JohnDoe.
Your ignorance is only exceeded by your lack of a decent vocabulary!
John – live a little. Actually WATCH a few hours of Fox (not Hannity – he’s a little, OK alot, pompous) and see for yourself. They actually give both sides the chance to blather their crap. Unlike Olberman – who has a nightly orgasm repeating his mantra that Beck, Oreilly or Limbaugh is the worst person in the world. Really Keith – it might be funny once – but every frickin time I see it – it’s one of those 3. He needs a new schtick or he’ll continue to get his ass handed to him in the ratings…..
Keep your head stuck where it is, pull it out November 3rd – cry – reinsert. Repeat on the day after Obama goes DOWN in 2012.
I agree totally with your comment
Your oxyMORONic pseudonym is so revealing.
Kind of like “fair and balanced” juxtaposed with Fox news.
Here’s an extension of your (il) logic: PBS Newshour has low ratings ergo, their coverage is biased and inaccurate.
Neil–
Now you’re starting to get it.
not ergo. because.
“Here’s an extension of your (il) logic: PBS Newshour has low ratings ergo, their coverage is biased and inaccurate.”
PBS is biased and innacurate with low ratings, yes. But that’s not a good example of illogic — it’s a good example of a core Democrat philosophy: Government subsidizing of parasitic losers.
Similar to liberals economically subsidizing horrible ratings on all networks, MSNBC, CNN, NY Times, Wash Post, etc. They forego millions – heck, they NY Times is practically a penny stock now – just so that they can continue reassure feeble minded Democrats that “it’s not your fault, it’s not your fault, it’s not your fault”. If they needed the money they wouldn’t so obviously slant the news that an informed person doesn’t trust them any more.
Except MSNBC – they know they’re being lied to, they’re just kool aid drinkers. Keif, Gilliga-erRachel, Airhead America Ed, Chris “the Tingle” matthews, etc. And the same 5 liberal “experts” and “journalists” on every show, with the occasional liberal politician who’s not yet afraid to show his face on TV as long as they can guarantee no voters will be on the set.
No… just boring.
Maybe it’s because MSNBC is not a news outlet but a public relations machine for Obama.
Plus the fact that I was able to watch the entire operation on my computer from a FOX link they had on their website. No commercials to disrupt it either; just LIVE from the Mine Site in Chile. Fabulous coverage…Thank you FOX!
Olbermann would have had a Sissy Fit if he was preempted
The reason the other news sites did not run coverage is because the president of Chile was so obviously much more engaged and concerned with the outcome. Mr. Pinero successfully marshaled the resources of his entire country in a very smart way. Compare that with the way Mr. Obama handles a crisis. These news agencies did not want to show the obvious.
May be possible that people are waking up and realizing who is telling the truth?? Hmmm…..
I do believe they are, which is glorious news
When America wants unbiased news, they turn to Fox, much to the chagrin of those who like their fare biased.
They’re all ‘biased’. Fox is just more entertaining.
Yes,lol, I agree.
I agree too! I thought the coverage of the mine was well done, and not politicized.
Exactly, it wasn’t politicized, which is why their coverage got the highest ratings.
Exactly! This is why CNN has more unique viewers then Fox! Wait… shit!
When it comes to news, they’ve been doing a seriously good job lately – probably because they have the money to do it. They had two separate correspondents at the mine plus the pool feed from Chile. It was great TV.
Indeed Fox’s talking heads lean right – way right. But those are their primetime shows and you know what you’re getting into if you watch them.
MSNBC leans far far far far far left and CNN leans far far left. What’s your point and we’re not talking bout the one on top of your head.
Gotta love it! The FNC is kickin’ broadcast butts. The libs are pissin’ bricks!
Nothing like another koolaid drinker on his desk top in his moms basement.
I’ll bet your parents are really proud of you JohnDoe. Your response is so intelligent. If you don’t like it, don’t watch. I won’t demagogue you for your choices; the least you could do is respect other peoples choices. Unless, this is the only way you know how to speak.
kinda like you are for keith oberman
@JohnDoe…are you referring to yourself? Of all the people I know who watch Fox none of them perform the acts that you describe. Further none of them would write such disgusting commentary regardless of how vile the opponents position. Up your personal bar and dont write garbage like this.
Once again, Fox proves why they’re number 1. CNN just dumped Jonathan Klein for his failures, and MSNBC is just too much Kool Aid to recognize there are other things outside partisan politics worth reporting on.
May be it was all those Tea Party people trying to see if they all killed each other. Right Chris Mathews!!!!!!
It is because the TV viewing audience has only one place to go for real news. Fox’s coverage was right on and informative. No Politics.
What a great story!
Wait,, I watched this at 4 AM Central time, FOX was running a news loop, they were showing 3 miners when in fact there were 8 . Also later, Fox was doing the normal programing,, CNN ,which I don’t watch all the time was on top of the NEWS!
You will normally find my TV on FOX, but for the mine coverage CNN had them all beat!
ODessa,Texas
Only viewers CNN has is in the union run /bought & paid for airports and other large union owned /is a better acronym/ places and SHOULD be way ahead by far with viewers… funny they are not!! People with intelligence want NEWS…not spoon fed opinions so they turn to FOX!
Although coverage has been excellent overall. It is interesting to me that I have only seen one story that identified the equipment, equipment handlers and team as Americans brought in to handle rescure operation.
In the Chilean news they were very clear about the small company in Berlin PA. Doing the drilling of the plan “B”. The US drillers were applauded as soon as they finished the drilling and they also use the machine to set up the tubing for approx. 50 meters. After that the US guys were on Chilean TV saying that it was time now for them to move the machine and make space for the EU machine to do the work with the capsule. The capsules were designed by the Chilean navy (3 capsules. One bigger one and 2 small ones) and the big pulley and cable were European. The Chileans had a spare cable in case it deteriorated during so many ups and downs. The capsule they used was the second one a smaller version of the big one.
NASA aided greatly in planning and construciton of the capsule. NASA also provided space psychologists, doctors, food both liquid and solid, etc. Google NASA/Chilean Miners. That US help was in addition to the wonderful drill invention and drillers from Berlin, PA. Our “Plan B” drill absolutely saved the miners in the first half of October rather than a maybe by other drills/drillers in December. Our media is NOT giving our countrymen their due in helping with the rescue. God Bless the miners, ALL their rescuers and all their families.
You have to be willfully brain dead in order to beleive FOX is telling the truth on ANYTHING.
“When America wants unbiased news, they turn to Fox”
It really is like self parody isn’t it? The people who think this stupidity.
my god… can a human skull actually be this thick?
Unfortunately based on your post, I guess so. How sad
You ate lead paint as a child you poor thing.
Juan is an idiot. He obviously doesn’t believe yhe MSM is heavily biased to the left.
where do you turn for unbiased news… the huffington post… daily kos…
Oh the pain in your post. I just love thinking of the tears you’ll be crying on the morning of Nov 3.
Yes! Yesss! Oh, let me taste your tears!
Mm, your tears are so yummy and sweet!
Oh, the tears of unfathomable sadness! My-yummy!
By far the creepiest post of the day!
That’s great! Thanks for saving my week.
Stupidity? The only thing “stupid” about fox news is the darn liberals like you allowed on the air. I say kick’em all out and go 100% conservative. It would balance out the 100% morons running MSLSD,CNN, ABC, etc.
I think it’s funny that Juan thinks Fox viewers are brain dead, yet he cannot even spell the word ” believe” correctly…
“Beleive?”
Juan – another kool aid drinker!
another perfect example of a liberal having to put down and bash someone who isn’t left wing. hilarious.
Grow up “Juan”. Just because you don’t LIKE the truth you don’t have to blame the messenger.
Obama & the Democrats are disgusting FAILURES! That isn’t the fault of Fox News. 10% unemployment isn’t Fox’s number, it a fact.
I gave up on US coverage: stupid commentators who talked over all the audio with guest non-’experts’ and graphics covering 1/2 the screen. I watched Telemundo and TV Chile. Telemundo scored a phone interview with a miner’s wife after she had hugged him.
It’s just entertaining to watch the crazies(ex..Faux Hosts) so I’ll just leave it on FOX due to force of habit.
Compared to Fox, MSNBC is the cable news equivalant of “One Flew Over The Cuckoo’s Nest.”
After all, Olbermann, Ed Schultz, Matthews and Leapin’ Larry O’Donnell all can vie for Jack Nickleson’s role!
I saw msnbc was not covering the story… pretty interesting decision considering their coverage of the US mine disaster and charges against the US company. I would have thought the “oppressed” Latin American coal miners angle would play better… it appears they were more interested in trying to scoop viewers not interested in Chile… no problem but looking for a “new audience” they focused on gay rights / military don’t ask don’t tell story line… a controversial social issue more relevant to a smaller audience and irrelevant to an election focused on the economy. Click!
Fox news is great. Wish they had mentioned that the man who owns the drilling company that rescued the miners is from Houston, Texas. There was not one USA or Texas label on the drilling rig or the tube which carried the miners out to freedom. The company was a small business in Houston, Texas USA. Obama continues to treat Texas and Texans as if we are from another planet and not worthy of any recognition; however, Texans are smart and hard working people. Remember the first word said on the first moon landing was “Houston”, we have landed.” Give Texas and Texans credit when credit is due.
Typical foul mouthed, disgusting liberal. No facts, just bile. I’m thinking the biggest sh*th*l* is wherever you happen to be at the time. Probably one of the many inner city paradises brought to you by the Democrat party. Kiss your husband with that mouth, do ya?
Democratic party*, whoops! Someone can’t spell!
“Houston the eagle has landed” could easily have been “Boston, the eagle has landed” if JFK was still alive when the decision was made on where to locate mission control. LBJ the accidental president, and Houston, the accidental location.
It isn’t that Fox is the latest and greatest thing since sliced bread. I think it’s just the fact that the other media outlets are SOOOO bad, that Fox ends up looking like the best alternative.
cnredd
Political Wrinkles
I think you are right. CNN and MSNBC have both self-destructed.
MSNBC is now Video Air America.
CNN is ?????
Did FOX at least get their two cents in about how it was the miner’s fault for the accident? And how much it’s costing the company to dig them out which of course cuts into the bottom line? Because profits trumps a human life anyway in FOX’s book.
It’s obvious you don’t watch FOX, but you do have the talking points down.
I guess repeating someone else talking points is all you can do when you outsource your thinking to others.
Tcat, your response made my day. I have entered it into my “conservative talking points”. LOL
You most have a horrible life. – conservatives don’t need talking points, we don’t even need teleprompters to speak to school kids. We stick with the truth.
two kind of liberals
The duped and
the dupers.
No, Decebal, there was none of the nonsense you’re… projecting???
Great job fox,I watched the rescue.I go to Argentina and chile on fishing trips in January almost every year.Chile is a great place to go for a vacation.
I’m a BIG Fox News fan, but was disgusted with Fox because (1) on Tuesday night when their live coverage ended after the first 10 or so miners came up (I have a poor memory), but later on through the night Fox was not live (though it looked so) as they repeated the earlier rescues; meanwhile CNN stayed on live throughout the night, so Fox was saying 3 out of 33 rescued (something like that) while CNN was giving the real live coverage (say, 17 out of 33 rescued), and (2) on Wednesday, Fox was showing REPEATS of O’Reilly (!!!) while CNN was giving live coverage of the 5 Rescuers getting out (though Fox finally came in live after the last rescuer came up).
@Decebal you don’t know what you are talking about, get some professional help, being full of hate is no way to live and it makes you unable to comprehend reality, you know I am right don’t you. PS, stay off Huffington Post and Daily Kos those sites are making you emotionally sick.
It’s pretty funny to listen to the kook left after all this time still trying to talk down Fox News and convince people they’re the biased ones.
We’ve all had lots of time to see them all in action, make our own determination and that’s why Fox runs away with the rating night after night.
But you just keep spouting the party line and telling yourself the DNC propaganda that CNN, MSNBC and the broadcast majors do islegitimate news and we’ll keep chuckling while you makes asses out of yourselves.
For the life of me, I don’t understand how MSNBC, CNN or CNN’s HLN, networks have any sponsorhsip. Their anchors are third rate, at best, and MSNBC is so blatantly biased that its credibility is zero with most of America, as evidenced by its pathetic 920,000 nationwide audience. And, yet they still have sponsorship. Go figure?
MSNBC’s sponsorship is NBC, GE, and Microsoft. They will gladly forego millions in revenue due to lousy ratings to get Liberal/Progressive/Socialist message out. Just like all the other networks. If the libs are right (I know, pretend it’s possible just for this) than any one of them could make a FORTUNE by playing it down the middle newswise by reporting between Fox and ABCBSMCNBCNN but none of them will do it – the Democraps need the propoganda and those networks are run by true believers.
I don’t like Fox. They started cozying up to
Karl Rove, the traitor, and the personal destructor of Christine O’donnel. They gave
him way too much time.
This is why I don’t like Fox.
Show’em how is done FOX. Best news network by a mile and the only one showing both sides of the story instead of just the liberal. Which is why so many say it’s biased, they’re just brainwashed into thinking the liberal point of view is the neutral point since this is what we’ve gotten most of our lives
I think many of the critics are also too dumb to distinguish the news shows from the talk shows too when accusing the news on the network of being bias
Everyone realizes that Fox is completely bent, right? I’m talking totally made up. Great entertainment I’m sure but completely detached from reality. Just because the real truth doesn’t fit your narrow world view doesn’t mean it’s “biased.”
You are confused the only ones detached is MSNBC, CNN and YOU.
OK, like got any examples?
How about running forged documents to attack the president two weeks before the election? Oh wait – CBS
How about sharing donor lists with the Democrat Party in several cities? Oh wait – PBS
How about selling Obama items in their store and running ads on other networks that look an awful lot like political ads featuring Obama? Oh wait – MSNBC
How about falsly reporting that Rush Limbaugh had made statements in support of slavery while he was trying to negotiate a NFL deal? Oh wait – CNN
>>Just because the real truth doesn’t fit your narrow world view doesn’t mean it’s “biased.”
If leftists weren’t afraid of the truth, they wouldn’t be so desperate in their fascist attempts to silence their opposition with perverse ideas like the Fascist Doctrine, Card Check, speech codes and thoughts crimes laws, Campaign Finance “Reform,” and every other effort to silence views they don’t like.
In any event, truth and reality is coming your way in November. Not that you’ll ever accept the judgment that is coming down on your twisted worldview.
Ever since Obama made the idiotic claim that Fox
was “dangerous” and Msnbc a good example of
objective news, I have elevated Fox. For straight
news it far surpasses the others. Opinion shows
are a matter of taste which keeps Spitzer off my
list. I lived in NY when he obliterated the careers
of Hank Greenberg (AIG) and Dick Grasso (NYSE)
with bullying and manipulated charges. Had those
two still been in charge, the financial system would
have fared much better. CNN moved from boring
to boorish. Its choice of Piers Morgan is puzzling
also and offers little promise of a return to better
ratings.
I don’t want businessmen or politicians “in charge” of our financial system. What we have had for many decades is a mixed economy with much socialism and corporatism interjected. The Federal Reserve system is the head of the beast. It is a market system that simply isn’t even remotely free. I would much prefer a free market where the consumer is in charge. The role of the government shouldn’t be to centrally plan but, rather, to call balls and strikes so to speak. The Federal Reserve’s artificially low interest rates, cheap money, and phony credit not driven by real savings were the single greatest factors in the housing bubble. It was exacerbated by government housing subsidies and an implied government guarantee of bailout should things go back. This created moral hazzard.
