Fox has picked up two animated series eyed for next season, Napoleon Dynamite, an adaptation of the hit 2004 movie, and Allen Gregory, co-written and executive produced by Jonah Hill. Both series are produced by 20th Century Fox TV; Allen Gregory is a co-production with studio-based Chernin Entertainment. The order to Napoleon Dynamite is for 6 episodes, while Allen Gregory has been picked up for 7 episodes. Both projects originated as presentations.
The original cast of Napoleon Dynamite led by Jon Heder is back to voice the animated series, which follows the misadventures of an awkward high school teenager and his quirky friends as they struggle to navigate life in rural Idaho. The film’s writers Jared Hess, who also directed it, and Jerusha Hess wrote the adaptation with The Simpsons veteran Mike Scully. All 3 are executive producing.
Allen Gregory‘s title character is the world’s most celebrated seven-year-old who embarks on the greatest challenge of his life: attending elementary school with regular kids. Hill co-wrote the script with Yes Man co-writers Andrew Mogel and Jarrad Paul. The three are executive producing with Peter Chernin and Katherine Pope.
The sizes of the orders to Napoleon Dynamite (6 eps) and Allen Gregory (7 eps) are unusual as they represent one regular 13-episode order split in 2. I hear the shows’ producers are not particularly thrilled because animated series with such short orders are more difficult to staff and more expensive to make. Also, in success, the small pickups will lead to a pretty large production gap between the initial and the back orders. Fox has a new animated series on deck for midseason, Bob’s Burgers.

Genius idea, Napoleon Dynamite as animation is a great idea and something my son will watch. Can’t wait to see him dance!
flipping sweet!
Yes! Napoleon Dynamite is pretty much my favorite movie ever. Those characters are perfect for animation. Just hope the original quirky tone of the movie is not ruined by the suits.
The nail in the coffin for Jon Heder.
You should leave the industry. Ur boring.
All His movies have been awesome, funny, and definitely NOT boring.
@Not Impressed:
????
Having the signature persona that initially got you recognition reach an even wider audience on a weekly basis is detrimental to an actor? Yeah, Captain Kirk absolutely RUINED William Shatner.
Here’s a dime so you can buy a clue.
Comparing Captain Kirk to Napoleon Dynamite is like comparing Batman to something that nobody cares about.
Understanding context analogy w/out subject comparison is obviously for (smarter) adults.
Still huntin’ for that dime, huh?
If Mike Scully is in, then I am out. The Simpsons haven’t been funny since the mid-1990′s.
To Not Impressed II
Whereas YOU have been funny since… since… oh yeah, right.
To Not Impressed II
Simpsons have been funny since it started. You just don’t have a sense of humor Mr. Hates everything.
Great! Something the whole family can agree to not give a fuck about.
watch your language; its a cartoon!
Napoleon Dynamite is a stale pre-sold property not ripe for success any longer, but then again, when did Fox ever really know what they were doing?
totally agree with op….heder was a flash in the pan…and a dim one at that.
Napoleon Dynamite is hilarious.
It’ll be a hit and you will all eat your words.
Totally agree. Napoleon as a cartoon is genius.
I’d rather see a live-action Napoleon Dynamite single cam series.
I’m with Joe. That would be hilarious!
Bingo, Joe. Surprised that hasn’t been developed. Couldn’t be worse than any of the other crap out there. Heder should go into TV – 2nd banana at best in the feature world.
the guy who played Pedro. will he voice this character as well?

I wish they would make a live action version of Napoleon Dynamite with all the same people from the movie..
Allen Gregory sounds like it should be on Nickelodeon. I mean really, a primetime show about elementary school? Seven episodes is just a way to stroke Jonah Hill for whatever film project Fox wants him.
Napoleon Dynamite might have still been a good idea five years ago.
The only good thing about these two shows is that they’re not created by Seth Macfarlane.
I bet there are a lot of great show ideas out there that got passed over for these nepotistic, Hollywood circle jerks. The audience won’t buy these stale ideas. Those Fox development execs better have their next gigs lined up.
Let it be so number one… for i hope to work on said show. we’ll laugh, we’ll cry, some of us will drink beer after work. see, it’s just not worth bunching up your manties if it ain’t your bag.
Nacho Libre and Gentlemen Broncos were both so successful and critically acclaimed, I can’t believe Fox didn’t make this show YEARS ago. These guys are all hit makers and America loves them!
Terrible idea. Who cares? Just b/c John Heder can’t move on w/his life doesn’t we can’t.
Bad Fox…. bad!
This is by far the stupidest idea ever. I’ll bet anything that Jonah hill and George Lucas are butt buddies because there are both extremely good at destroying perfectly good movies with animated series. Maybe to go with the theme we should make a gay napolean dynamite animated movie too!
Haven’t we learned anything about making movies into TV shows? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_television_programs_based_on_films
A lot of these shows didn’t last very long, at least not to my knowledge
I didn’t find Napoleon Dynamite to be a good movie to begin with and the fact that they’re making it into a cartoon just kinda seems like it’s beating a dead horse
You cynics wouldn’t know a good idea if it bit you in the rump. Napoleon Dynamite was freaking hilarious, and if you didn’t like it, than you clearly don’t “get” that kind of humor.
I liked the movie, and I like the cast. But the animated series sounds like a bad idea, and the trailer makes it look like an even worse idea.
I think it will be great, if anything comes close,(simpsons etc.) Awsome!
