EXCLUSIVE: Francis Ford Coppola has begun quietly directing his next feature. I’m told that Coppola is shooting Twixt Now And Sunrise, a thriller with overtones of horror, and that his star is Val Kilmer. Also in the cast are Elle Fanning (Super 8) and Bruce Dern (who long ago starred in the Coppola-scripted The Great Gatsby). But the picture’s fulcrum is Kilmer, who plays a horror novelist. The film is based on a short story written by Coppola. It is shooting in Napa, on Coppola’s property. Coppola hasn’t tackled the horror genre since early in his career, when he directed Dementia 13, and of course Bram Stoker’s Dracula. And some might consider Apocalypse Now to be horror.
While the internet has been buzzing about the possibility of a Top Gun sequel and whether Tony Scott and Tom Cruise will return to it (neither is attached), it is interesting to see Cruise’s costar Kilmer catching a second career wind. Kilmer was pretty good in The Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call–New Orleans, but it has been a long time since great turns in films like Heat and Tombstone. Sometimes it’s nice to see veterans get another shot and I’m told Coppola sought out the actor. Coppola, who’ll be presented the AMPAS Governors Award on November 13, has picked up his directing pace. Taking nearly a decade off after The Rainmaker, Coppola returned with more personal, indie-flavored efforts. He directed the 2007 Tim Roth-starrer Youth Without Youth, followed by 2009′s Tetro. I’m told that Coppola has funded the picture independently and hasn’t yet sought out distribution.

Macgruber wasn’t his comeback?
I don’t care what people say about Tetro or Youth Without Youth.Simply put, Its great to see Coppola making movies once again.
Here, here! At least he is making movies again.
Doesn’t Bram Stoker’s Dracula qualify as horror? Granted, it wasn’t scary, but still…
Bram Stoker’s Dracula was horrible, not horror.
Interesting news. Very excited for anything new from FFC. I enjoyed Tetro and I’m thankful that Apocalypse Now is finally available on video in its correct aspect ratio. Never thought I’d see the day. Val Kilmer is a talented actor, but can be hit or miss. If FFC handled Brando twice, I’m sure he can corral Kilmer. And forget Top Gun 2, I’d rather see Val in REAL GENIUS 2!
He was also really great in Kiss, Kiss, Bang, Bang
Seconded. And Thirded!
Kilmer hasn’t done anything truly memorable since Tombstone, which is coming up to 20 years ago. But Coppola clearly thinks he has more to offer. Should be interesting.
Disagree. He was in top form in “Spartan”, “Kiss, Kiss Bang Bang” and even “Streets of Blood” with Fiddy (yes, I know it was DTV).
Sure, he’s not as over-the-top as he was in “The Doors”, “Willow”, and “Tombstone”, but I’m totally digging that internal style that he’s had since “Heat”.
Kilmer was great in David Mamet’s “Spartan” (2004). (It also features an intense, almost feral performance by Kristen Bell). Well worth checking out.
Val was great in The Salton Sea. He also did a creepy & very scary character in a Num3ers episode a year or so ago.
WOW. Good for Val! This is huge. Loved him in Heat and The Doors and he’s due for a major comeback. Kudos!
OMG. I’ve loved Val since I was a kid and have hoped that he’d get back where he belongs. I hope this is a sign of that.
The return of Dieter Von Cunth. He’s your Huckleberry!
Kilmer actually acts pretty well, confident and really great in portraying his role. That is why I a fan of more veteran actors and actresses their acting are incomparable.
So glad Val is back at it cause this cougar
would like another shot at him!
Val Kilmer is awesome, even playing KITT on KNIGHT RIDER.
OH GOD I love his jowls! When I’m 18 it’s ON Kilmer!
Val Kilmer will always be Nick Rivers to me.
“There is sauerkraut in my lederhosen…”
How silly can you get?
Kilmer’s a very smart actor and something of a Mr. Crankypants, so I’m sure he’s fine with the fact that his career has been largely marked by small-ish, interesting films. Wouldn’t you rather be him right now than Tom Cruise?
Plus he was awesome in SPARTAN (2004)
love kilmer but the guy needs to lose a ton of weight
he doesn’t have an imposing figure now, either, like a gandolfini…he just looks like a bloated carcass
Val Kilmer has always been a great actor. Transforming from his early years as a comedic actor (Real Genius, Top Secret!) in to an understated action star (Willow, Top Gun, Heat, The Saint) while always taking on tough roles (The Doors, Tombstone, The Ghost and the Darkness). Its sad that he isn’t considered a super star because in the last 15 years he hasn’t had a blockbuster (money wise) film or because he has taken fluff roles that people can’t forgive him for. But if you look at the small films he has starred in since 2002 (Salton Sea, Wolderland, Spartan, Kiss Kiss Bang Bang, etc.), Kilmer knows he is a great actor even if he doesn’t make 20 million a pic.
Elle Fanning is really great, too. She’s been good in everything and conveys grace and modesty.
In the cruel, new world of knee-jerk snark Val has become a poster boy for attack. Yeah, he’s gained a lot weight; yeah he looks older – so what. Does it follow that he’s now become a bad actor? Hardly. When someone has proven themselves to be super-talented, interesting, orginal and charismatic what more do they need to do to earn my respect? Stay skinny? He could have an acting career similar to Sean Penn’s if he wanted that or possibly had the chance.
Two words: “Real Genius.” How can you not fall in love?
I think it shows a lot that Coppola chooses Kilmer over another actor that was in Port of Call. Nic Cage who has done nothing but horrible movies since 2005 and he’s family.
Nikke, you obviously forgot his great, charismatic turn in the highly enjoyable KISS KISS BANG BANG with Robert Downey Jr – a smart, witty unconventional buddy movie.
And he was solid in high profile hit pictures like DEJA VU, for example.
Coppola’s quietly shooting because he’s been a has been for well over a decade. Check out his filmography – he’s been over since he botched GF 3. I guess I should expect this media hyping since the inept Sofia (see Marie Antoinette) is a new pursuit of you folks looking for something to write about.
Inept? Last I heard Sofia won an Academy Award for screenwriting and was nominated for an Oscar for directing. Her latest film just won the top prize at the Venice Film Festival. Her films are just that, HER FILMS in an industry that meddles incessantly. She is underappreciated and brilliant. As for her father, he didn’t have to do anything other than THE GODFATHER to be in the Pantheon. They are both beyond your petty an pathetic comments.
Val Kilmer sounds very risky, been a long time since he has had a hit, of course it had been a long time since Travolta had scored before Pulp fiction, but it will need that kind of performance to bring him back from the big Hollywood dead
Val is a great actor, much under-rated by critics, but obviously not by great directors if FFC looked him out for this. He has had great films over the past few years that have been ignored by many. I agree with Scott, it is a great shame he is overlooked so often. And a bloated carcass he isn’t. He’s just got older and accepted the glamour guy days are over. I wish others would do the same. It is sad to see some striving to look as they did 20 odd years ago, and only succeeding in looking unhappy. I’d rather have Val any day.
have you seen a picture of the guy lately? they’re really going to have to work around his weight problem…maybe just put a blue tarp over him and CGI a normal body into the shot
Thanks Chrismo! And how many aging actors stay looking like they did at 28? None really. So bashing his looks doesn’t make him a bad actor. With age comes experience. (And he looked great none the less in his most recent films anyway.)
I’m just chiming in because someone has to mention Thunderheart, one of my favorite Val-Pics.
