FX has handed out a 13-episode series order to comedy pilot Wilfred for a summer 2011 launch. The project, based on the acclaimed Australian series of the same name, was hot from the script stage and then it solidified its chances in the pilot stage by landing Lord of the Rings’s Elijah Wood to star opposite Jason Gann, co-creator and star of the original series. David Zuckerman, who wrote the pilot script and serves as executive producer, describes Wilfred as comedy “about a guy, Ryan (Wood), the girl next door (Fiona Gubelmann), and mixed-breed dog, Wilfred (Gann), who is part Labrador retriever and part Russell Crowe on a bender.” Randall Einhorn directed the pilot for FX Prods. Rich Frank, Paul Frank, Jeff Kwatinetz, Joe Connor and Ken Conner also exec produce. Wilfred is adding to FX’s rapidly expending comedy series portfolio, which includes It’s Always Sunny In Philadelphia, Archer, The League and Louie.

Hopefully they won’t make a mess of it like NBC did with Kath & Kim.
Wilfred is funny. Wilfred says and does what any human would really like to say to another human. Will watch this show again, told all my friends who like comedy.
Considering it was on the multilingual channel SBS over here, 99.99% of Australians haven’t seen it either and have no care over it.
The world sees Wilfred as a dog; Ryan sees Wilfred as a man dressed in a dog suit.
Really F/X?
Elijah Wood can do better than this. He had so much talent. What happened?
Maybe you should see it before you judge.
I happened to see the original series. It is excellent. Even though the concept might seem questionable at first glance, the way it was written and played really works.
The Aussie series of Wilfred wasn’t too bad, but I still haven’t forgiven Jason Gann for his involvement (both as writer and performer) in the infamous sketch show stinker, The Wedge, which was possibly the single worst Australian television series ever made. Still, good luck to him on this project.
What happened, Elijah…
Maybe one should actually SEE the show before bashing it, its writers and its cast members….
I honestly thought he would have a career after LOTR. But if it pays the bills, then ok.
Elijah had a career before LOTR, and has done just fine for himself since, doing independent work as well as other (non film) projects. Just because he has chosen not to do mega blockbusters you see everywhere doesn’t mean he isn’t working. He made enough as a kid and managed his money well enough (i.e. not like a “movie star”) before LOTR (and from it) that he certainly doesn’t have to work. He chooses to, and takes projects that interest him.
Maybe learn more before you judge. IMDB isn’t hard to check.
genius!
Fiona Gubelmann is great and the script was pretty good too. I look forward to this series.
it is one of my favourite shows, i’m so glad there will be more of Wilfred.!
David Zuckerman is as nice a funny man as you will find. Good for him.
The Australian version of Wilfred was distinctly unfunny. It is a stoner’s idea of a good situation comedy. Make of that what you will.
Love the show…… it’s a straight shooting show that pulls no punches..
if you live in a world that is politically correct… then tough luck.. go live your boring lives.
Wilfred was hilarious, but I think that the dry Australian sense of humour and low budget approach are essential to its success. It’s got character. I’ve got serious doubts that those characteristics will be retained in the remake. Just look at what happened to Kath and Kim.
Isn’t it a huge difference that this will be F/X and not NBC? I have a lot more faith that they won’t kill this than I would in the Peacock.
