EXCLUSIVE: Graham King’s GK Films has won a spirited auction for feature film rights to the Broadway musical Jersey Boys: The Story of Frankie Valli & The Four Seasons. Book writers Marshall Brickman and Rick Elice will write the script. King and GK Films partner Tim Headington will produce. The deal was described as “groundbreaking;” I’m told it was a substantial seven-figures. The play tells the story of how Valli, Bob Gaudio, Tommy DeVito and Nick Massi went from blue-collar wrong side of the track origins to become an American pop sensation, selling 175 million records worldwide before they were 30 years old. The play has done over $1 billion in worldwide ticket sales since its 2005 Broadway opening, when it was directed by Des McAnuff and produced by Dodger Theatricals. It won four Tony Awards, including Best Musical and the cast album won the Grammy. When it transplanted to London, Jersey Boys won the 2009 Olivier Award for Best Musical.
Everyone, and I mean everyone, chased the movie rights to the musical, which were brokered by ICM’s Jeff Berg, The Four Seasons’ rep Peter Bennett and attorney Ken Ziffren. The film will use the music and lyrics of the group’s standards, including Sherry, Big Girls Don’t Cry, Rag Doll, Oh What A Night, and Can’t Take My Eyes Off of You. Rumors had DreamWorks pursuing it for Steven Spielberg, Tom Hanks and Gary Goetzman’s Playtone chasing it, and Warner Bros pursuing for producer Donald De Line, and Fox and Peter Chernin. Speculation is that GK had an edge because of its close relationship with Martin Scorsese, a hero of the group’s leader, Valli. But I’m told that Scorsese isn’t involved now. Though, how cool might that be?
Jersey Boys becomes the latest of several hits that are percolating as movies. The genre got a giant shot in the arm thanks to Mamma Mia!, which grossed north of $600 million worldwide for Universal Pictures and Playtone. Playtone is separately developing a screen version of the Green Day musical American Idiot, and Universal is working on a film based on In the Heights, and has started progress on a movie version of its stage blockbuster Wicked.
GK just produced the Ben Affleck-directed The Town, wrapped the Johnny Depp-Angelina Jolie-starrer The Tourist and the Gore Verbinski-directed Rango, is in production on the Martin Scorsese-directed Hugo Cabret and is readying a film about Queen singer Freddie Mercury that will star Sacha Baron Cohen. King saw Jersey Boys around the time that it opened, and he has been chasing the movie rights incessantly ever since. As is common with cash-cow musicals, this one stayed off the market for years. That changed six weeks ago, when Berg and Ziffren informed suitors that screen rights were up for grabs.
“Jersey Boys is one of the most electrifying stage shows any of us has ever seen and it has all the ingredients to become a big commercial hit movie,” King said. “So to now be collaborating with the whole team, Frankie, Bob, Marshall and Rick, to bring that magic to the big screen is just a wonderful dream come true,” he said.
Said Valli and Gaudio in a statement: “We are extremely excited about the passion and commitment expressed by GK Films to take Jersey Boys to another level. Graham King has been a believer from day one. We are in good hands.”

Ryan Molloy of the London cast has the star quality ,voice ,and carissma to be the star of the movie given the chance
Ryan Molloy for Frankie!!
Have seen both Ryan and John Lloyd Young as the character, and there is simply no comparison! Ryan’s vocals and edge totally pulls the carpet from under John’s feet.
Can’t wait x x x
If ‘Jersey Boys’ was to be made into a film I would hope that it would remain the same at the stage show as it’s a superb and captivating show.
I love the London ‘Jersey Boys’ production as the cast are excellent and very talented.
Ryan Molloy for me is brilliant and should be the first choice to play Frankie Valli in the big screen production; not only has Ryan Molloy got the brilliant voice he is without a doubt a great actor who shows true emotion and charisma. Having watched the other actors who portray Frankie Valli in the show worldwide on ‘YouTube’ I can honestly say hand on heart that they don’t even come close to Ryan Molloy in his portrayal as Frankie Valli.
Stephen Ashfield should also be cast as Ryan Molloy’s right hand man – Bob Gaudio as he has the energy and the personality and because Stephen and Ryan on stage have the same bond I can imagine Frankie Valli and Bob Gaudio had.
It’s great news re the Jersey Boys movie; i will certainly look forward to seeing it
There is only one guy in my opinion to play Frankie and that is the UK’s brilliant Ryan Molloy; he is simply outstanding in the role. Thank you
PLEASE cast JOHN LLOYD YOUNG as Frankie. He was so fabulous in the play!!!!!
Denise………I was in highschool and college and lived through the times of Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons and I’ve got to say JOHN LLOYD YOUNG can run circles around Frankie Valli. Sorry to say but John is much more talented and drop dead gorgeous, brilliant and magnificent. He would definitely be my first choice for playing Frankie in the movie. I’m just thankful and bless Valli for what he did so that JLY could be brought to our attention.
The actor to play Frankie has to be Ryan Molloy from the London cast, his voice, acting skills and sexy chrisma are amazing.
Frankie Valli’s son should play him in the movie… who better???
JOHN LOYD YOUNG ISN’T SHIT. EVERYONE NEEDS TO STOP KISSING HIS ASS. SURE HE DID A GOOD JOB IN THE PLAY, BUT HE THOUGHT HE WAS A HOT SHOT… LEFT JERSEY BOYS… **AND HE HASN’T DONE SHIT SINCE***
John Loyd Young owes Frankie Valli and Bob Gaudio his career, he’d be a no one without them.
It would be great if they could bring the original surviving 4S members + Joe Long into the film for a cameo appearance, say the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame reunion and/or the subsequent success of JB – The Musical
Also would be good to bring in a few more of their classic songs to supplement the original JB score; For example Silence is golden & Sun aint gonna shine anymore.
This would add further to the realisation that many (of the uninitiated) felt after they saw JB for the first time – “I did not realise the 4S did those songs as well ?”
Just saw Jersey Boys on Saturday. Thought it was fabulous enjoyed every minute of it. Can not wait to see it as a movie.
Can’t wait to hear about Jersey Boys movie. LOVED the play and just returned from traveling to see Franki Valli & Four Seasons concert in Clearwater, FL. His voice is outstanding and the back-up singers are the best. YEAH, let’s get this movie made.
Jarrod Spector is the best Frankie Valli ever!!!!!!!! He should do the movie.
JLY 1st I saw oy vey my son is gay!he was great in that movie if he isn’t able to do this movie, the only one would be Jarrod Spector!
When will the movie be cast and when will production start.
I have seen Jersey Boys 14 times and will be seeing the show again next week, on 6 November and on their last show on 18 December. I am going to miss them so much when they leave Sydney and go to New Zealand. I so wish they made a DVD of the live show. The Australian cast are just brilliant and I believe they should be given the opportunity to be in any movie that is made about Jersey Boys. I love the music so much.
Although the movie, with the original broadway cast is highly anticipated, PLEASE RECORD THE BROADWAY VERSION AND RELEASE IT PRIOR TO THE MOVIE, as was done with RENT!
I’ve seen Jersey Boys six times (West End 3, Broadway 2, Las Vegas 1), including four different actors as Frankie Valli. All did the great man proud and any one of them (Ryan, John, Jarrod and Ricky)would make a name for himself in the movie version. All are wonderful actors who sing well (even if none can truly replicate the Valli falsetto!). The other Seasons were / are also universally well cast. My guess is that the moviemakers will cast afresh and surprise us all. Let’s hope they get it right: after all, it’s going to be shown on TV for the next 75 years!
A few more thoughts following my previous posting. There’s been much speculation about who might be cast as Frankie Valli in the movie. How about this scenario? A young actor to play the 15-year-old Frankie, a mature actor to carry the burden of the role, and the real Frankie to do a voice-over for the movie version of the final pronouncement: “That’s why I’m still out there chasing the music, trying to get home.” Meanwhile, I understand the movie release has been quietly shunted back to 2014. Could the reason be that there’s a Beach Boys movie pending in 2013?
Just like Jersey Boys, this movie will be an absolute smash!!!!
Love the idea of the movie. I always want to see the play but never got around to doing so. Excited about this.
