EXCLUSIVE: HBO has renewed sophomore comedies Bored to Death and Eastbound & Down for a third season. With drama Boardwalk Empire already picked up for Season 2, HBO has now renewed its entire current Sunday lineup. The second season debut of Eastbound & Down averaged 1.7 million viewers, up 150% from the show’s series premiere, while Bored to Death’s season premiere audience was more modest, 1.1 million, despite following Boardwalk Empire. While not hits, the shows have remained relatively steady in the ratings, averaging 1 million viewers (Bored) and 1.44 million (Eastbound) this past Sunday, in addition to garnering critical praise for their sophomore seasons. Bored was created by Jonathan Ames and stars Jason Schwartzman, Ted Danson and Zach Galifianakis. Eastbound was created by Danny McBride, Jody Hill and Ben Best and stars McBride.

I love Bored To Death and I’m thrilled to see that it’s been renewed for a third season. I cannot stand East Bound and Down however, as it could very well be the unfunniest show I’ve ever seen.

I like both show but I can respect that other people not like ‘em both like I. Also Bored to Death is way better.
Eastbound and Down is a good show but the show’s creators shouldn’t have asked for more than one season. I’m still going to watch the 3rd season but overall the comedy gold was in season one and the rest of it is evidence of creators without the courage to pull the plug leaving people wanting more knowing that more would ruin the first part. I don’t blame ‘em though – I’d rather have a paid job making that show. However, they let genius slip away by agreeing to do more than one season.

i think that east bound and down is way funnier than bored to death. but bored to death has more developed characters. one thing that really brings bored to death down is that sometimes the main character gets annoying. galifianakis and dansen are just awesome. and danny mcbride is hilarious. eastbound and down has so many types of comedies and jokes tangled in the show it is good enough to watch more than once. i saw both seasons of it twice. i watched it alone and then again with my girl. kenny powers is the fuckin shit. he fucks bitches on the reg, smokes blunts on the reg, gets drunk on the reg. and he got the denali lol hes fuckin hilarious

Well in my opinion I feel the complete opposite…I tried to make it through 5 episodes of Bored to Death because I am a huge Jason S fan but the show is terrible… EBandD is too funny for words

I can understand people from the north or west not seeing EB&D as funny, but if you are from the South, you KNOW this guy!!!!! I live 10 miles away from Shelby, NC, and there are hundreds of Kenny Powers around here! Sometimes it is painful to watch, but it is all truth!

Hill and McBride and Best don’t give a rat’s ass about either Hollywood or the “safe”, ultra-PC mentality that prevails in the TV and movie industry today, and I hope they never change that attitude.

The show is incredibly funny and incredibly bleak. So if you’re looking only for yucks, look elsewhere. Go watch your Fawlty Towers DVD collection.
Speaking of British sitcoms, there was a BBC series back in the ’70s that sort of reminds me of Eastbound & Down. It was called The Fall and Rise of Reginald Perrin, and it concerned a guy who underwent a lengthy midlife crisis. Obviously the humor was alot different, but there was an underlying tone – the whole personal odyssey/search for redemption theme, which took the protagonist through all manner of increasingly squalid existences (and surreal supporting characters) before the final Moment of Truth – which resembles Eastbound quite alot.

The pilot episode was interesting, but the remaining episodes since have been a borefest.
It seems it’s not for everyone, but I’m also loving Boardwalk Empire so far. I like the slow burn and the time it takes to develop these characters. I watch primarily for the Nucky/Margaret story (hoping Lucy gets bounced soon), but all of the characters are pretty intriguing.
Boardwalk Empire gets better and better. I thought the writing in 3,4, and 5 was excellent. 6 was a little distasteful and too gross for my taste although the shoot out with Jimmy was very well done.

Spoiler Alert Fantasy: I love both series but to really shake things up when Kenny Powers returns to April he should discover her in the real Jonathan Ames’ arms and then beat the living crap out of him. Then have the Ames’ character (schwartzman) in the show investigate the beating and let Kenny Powers ultimate sidekick “Stevie” take the blame for putting the writer in the hospital. The real Jonathan Ames then visits Stevie in jail and their budding romance takes over season 4 of both shows.
Eastbound could be a documentary…so it is not “hahahaha” funny it is “Whoa, that shit really happens, funny”.
Bored is pretty good, but needs much more female nudity.

There was a full frontal male shot just last week (something I’ve personally never seen on a TV show) as well as all the male backside shots in general- so I don’t think it’s about naked women as much as it is naked people. Besides, it’s HBO. They all get naked.

Bored to Death is consistently enjoyable. Eastbound is pretty fucking amazing. It’s dumb, yet somehow also smart. Trashy, but sophisticated in a subversive way.
I’m really glad that they got renewed because they’ve become the only scripted comedies I’m still bothering to watch.
“Consistently enjoyable” is a perfect way to describe BTD. Not a great show, but a very good one. I thought the last four episodes of the first season really had some great momentum that wasn’t carried through into this season, but what can you do.
“Bored to Death” is so funny – I love it. It is the only show that makes me laugh on HBO (why is “Hung” called a comedy? Not funny at all and depressing. “Entourage” is also boring and it has never been funny).
HBO is painfully bad now. Boardwalk Empire is dreadful. HBO can lie to themselves all they want, everyone thinks so I’ve talked to. Bored to Death is exactly that and Entourage needs to be put out of its misery. Bring in something that people actually want to watch.
12 million people watch Boardwalk Empire on OnDemand, DVR and repeat viewings. There is very good reason why Boardwalk Empire is getting great writeups. It’s just that great.

Boardwalk is brilliant Mr. Comeon. Episodes 3,4 and 5 were outrageous. Kelly McDonald as Margaret and Gretchen Mol as Gillian are some of the best women to be on HBO. Love the show.
That scene with Margaret and Lucy was great writing. The scene with Jimmy shooting the gangsters was fucking epic. Great writing.
Boardwalk Empire episodes 4, 5 and 6 have been great. Terence Winter is a great showrunner.

That’s your opinion. Taking the story to Mexico was very clever, and it allowed for the creation of some great dialogue.
I did miss Cutler though, and more airtime for Clegg would have been great. But I’m sure both will be back for Season 3.
I liked “Eastbound” the first season and the start of the second up to Kenny’s meltdown. Now, it’s unwatchable. I mean Don Johnson? What the heck is that all about? As far as “Bored” goes, well, I always enjoy watching Sam Malone spar with a smarter female, even in a silver wig. As for Schwartzman and Galifianakis, they have shown so far to be the one note actors I always suspected they were.
These shows don’t blend well together. Bored to Death is the most unfunny tripe HBO has ever aired- Eastbound and Down is comic gold. I hate suffering through the half hour between Boardwalk Empire and Eastbound & Down. I vowed after last weekend’s atrocious Bored to Death to never do it again. I’ll go read for a 1/2 hour til Eastbound comes on.
“Unfunny tripe”? Tripe is otherwise known as stomach and used in some countries as a food source. Not sure if thats the word you meant. Bored to death isn’t meant to be pure comedy. It has developed characters.. and honestly.. it uses subtle comedy as the source of its humor. Eastbound and down is just straight up comedy. You like it or you don’t.. Since when does EVERYONE have to like something for it to have value?
I love EastBound, the best comedy on TV; it does seem to be jumping the shark with the Don Johnson episode. One mistake I won’t kill them with; but no more.
Please. They didn’t get within a hundred miles of the shark tank with that episode. But I agree that we can do without the producers giving us three or four “very special guest star” episodes in Season 3. (I have a feeling there is no real danger of that happening, but one never knows.)
Boardwalk while good is nothing special. Not in the same league as Mad Men/Breaking Bad or even Sons of Anarchy.
Boardwalk is on an epic scale. It is dealing with politics, temperence, prohibition, suffrage, misogyny, the klu klux klan and the birth of the mob and an incredible cast of characters over a vast area.
Mad Men is dealing with will they get to keep a cigarette account.
