Deadline revealed this morning that Blue Valentine received a surprising preliminary NC-17 rating from the MPAA. The Derek Cianfrance-directed film stars Ryan Gosling and Michelle Williams as a young couple whose marriage disintegrates. This teaser shows them in happier times:

One of the most baffling MPAA decisions in memory. Amazing performances, incredibly accomplished film… The best thing I saw in Cannes.
Harvey better not DARE cut it.
The NC-17 rating should be abolished… it’s either R or not. It just hurts indies, and indies are struggling as it is…
Amazing trailer. A+
What a bold conceit of a trailer, I really respond to this. MTV too reports it seems “a bit light for a film that tackles some pretty weighty topics, but perhaps that will be the beauty of it – recognizing that life is full of both titillating and tragic moments.” Here’s hoping the MPAA’s preposterous rating is cast aside to allow the largest audience possible to experience this impressive film.
Oh look, another Weinstein release that won’t make it past 50 theaters. Too bad, cause it looks great. Especially with that NC-17, it looks like I’ll be waiting for Netflix to send it out.
I want to see it.
So, extreme violence with simplistic emotion or mindlessness is considered “R” or even “PG-13″, but a movie that teaches a valuable lesson by showing the real-life emotional consequences of relatively mild hostility is considered “NC-17″?!? The leaders of nazi america, in their “wisdom”, apparently want to keep the current generation ignorant simpletons.
If HATCHET 2 and I’LL SPIT ON YOUR GRAVE can be released unrated, why can’t this?

That dudes a good actor I have no idea why he would waste his time with this crap.
he does it for the love of his craft and to help a great story come to life. He is a true actor/artist when it comes to Hollywood.
Yeah right, he’s a fucking hipster, that’s why he takes roles like this. The moment he gets bigger his entire fanbase in Silverlake will be clamoring for his head!
Pardon my ignorance, but what’s the “reason” this was given NC-17?
Mr. Derek cianfrance, is a genius!
What a career evolution for Michelle Williams. I remember when all the stars from WB series were breaking out and she didn’t do every movie like Holmes did. The most mainstream she got was “Halloween: H20″. She’s been able to leave “Dawson’s Creek” behind and move on to good adult roles.
I look forward to finally seeing this. And I really like Gosling. He’s done the same. People forget he was on the Mickey Mouse Club with Spears, Aguilera and Timberlake and now look at him. He is one of my favorite actors. I know he turned down a lot of big budget franchise stuff in the past, but he really shouldn’t any more.
What content is in this that requires an NC-17 rating? It has to be sex, because the MPAA hands out R ratings for extreme violence like candy.
The whole NC-17 is a publicity stunt. How else are they supposed to market the film…actors who are endearing on screen and simple little flick about a love story raises a whole bunch of chaos about an independent film brings a whole lot of questions to an audience. now, more than ever, people are going to see it. TWC used a small little tactic, simple as that.
Um, I don’t think the NC-17 rating is a publicity stunt at all. Maybe the film had too much sexual content. Does Michelle Williams show herself naked a lot in this film? That could be a reason. What if the film had too much profanity and nasty language. Maybe it had some drug use in it. The trailer here may not seem like an NC-17 movie but that’s what they want you to believe. Once you see the movie yourself, you’ll know why then. If you pay attention to the trailer, the film has more to the story than just a couple falling in love. It’s more like a serious and intense drama with intelligent writing. Don’t go bashing this movie when you haven’t even seen it yet.
I’m impressed with the trailer and I’m already interested in seeing it.
This looks like a Mark Woollen trailer. I’m calling it.
The trailer was cut by Zealot.
Saw a screening – Best film of the year. Gosling and Williams are so talented, so raw in this film; both deserve Oscar nods. The film just blew me away. A dissection of a relationship like ETERNAL SUNSHINE OF THE SPOTLESS MIND; as real and heartbreaking as REVOLUTIONARY ROAD. Great “teaser” trailer that works well because it doesn’t give too much away.
There’s sex (I believe Williams full frontal too, but I was too wrapped up in the story to really remember), but not enough to warrant an NC-17 rating. That’s absolutely ridiculous. I hope Weinstein and the filmmakers fight the rating. Please let the Weinstein marketing machine work like the old days on this one, because this is a film that truly deserves it – deserves to be seen and deserves the awards.
